I have two mouthpieces for tuba I tend to call them the “Unstoppable duo” one is a parentucci -88+ which I use in big band to get a dark sound and my second is my Jacob Arnold’s heritage mouthpiece which I love using for solos
Personally for small shank tenor I like to use a Denis Wick 4BS. I’m primarily a tuba player who doubles on bass trombone for jazz, so whenever I have to switch to tenor trombone (usually for a big band trombone 3 part) I prefer to use the bigger mouthpieces in order to minimize the change my face has to go through from the bigger mouthpieces I always use.
I think they make great mouthpieces but thinking that spending twice as much on a mouthpiece is going to make you twice the player probably isn't true.
Thoughts on the RT-45 pentucci? And the sousa power line from pentucci ? And what is your opinion on pentucci mouthpieces? Also what kind of tuba is that?
I haven't tried any of the RT mouthpieces yet even though they have been out for a while. I probably should try them along with the Perantucci mouthpieces again but when I last tried them (7 or 8 years ago) they didn't really work for me. There are so many people who sound great on them though! My playing has changed so much since then and I bet I could find one that works well for me if I wanted to. The Tuba in this video is my VMI Mel Culbertson Neptune 6/4 CC tuba.
@@LowBrassU amazing, what mouthpiece do you recommend for playing Sousa while benefiting my low, high, and loud rang? Also for solo music where I would be jumping octaves, what would you recommend? Also I love your content and your tuba looks amazing!!!
@@an_ant1928 While I don't play a ton of Sousaphone, I like playing a 2XL classic series from Denis Wick. I think in general a moderate sized mouthpiece works well on sousaphone. I have a sousaphone on loan for a while so I may do some experimenting. Thanks for watching my videos!
All of those companies make great mouthpieces, I have two Griegos but nothing from the other two although I have tried them a good but and really liked them.
I’m pretty sure DW talks about the Heritage having a lighter sound compared to the classic series. I believe the reason is because the heritage is a lighter blank compared to the classic.
For tenor trombone I use a Griego Alessi 5C, and it’s the best mouthpiece I’ve used for anything. For bass trombone, I use a blank (and kinda crappy) 1/2 g. For jazz bass trombone I use a Schilke 60, equivalent to a 00AL. I plan to get a Denis Wick classic series 9bs for the small bore trombone I’m getting soon
I do not own any currently but they work just fine. I love the idea of not needing any sort of plating. I do think they sound slightly different but different is not necessarily bad.
@@LowBrassU yea I just ordered a 0AL and was playing and saw the paper said the 1AL was meant for low range so I wanted to know what you had to say. What do you think
I don't know how often you check the comments, but with Christmas coming up I'm considering some mouthpieces to ask the fam for. Currently, I use a robert tucci rt44 for just about all things tuba, and I'm not looking to make the jump to the biggest, deepest mouthpiece there is, although I would like to go a bit bigger for orchestral benefits. What might you recommend?
It's really hard to blindly recommend but I really like the 1xl and 2xl from Denis wick. For orchestral stuff I use the 1xl but the 2xl probably is better all around. I don't think they're as big as the names suggest but your mileage may vary.
@@LowBrassU Thanks for the info and responding so quickly. Hope to see some more streams and vids after the holidays are over. Merry Christmas! edit: Just a quick q, is the 2xl deeper than the 1xl?
I just loved how proud he seemed😂
I'm mostly proud I can lift them. Those mouthpiece holders are incredibly heavy.

Two great mouthpieces!
I think my favorite small bore mouthpiece is the griego SW model. I play a lot of high jazz music and it works very well!
I haven't tried that mouthpiece in a long time! I remember liking it.
I'll steal back my Pickett 7 if it's the last thing I do!
I've already melted it down for body armor for tonight.
I’ve been using a 1g for 2 years now with my bass trombone, and I live it.

I've been meaning to pick up that mouthpiece to mess around with. I don't think it would be my main mouthpiece but I can see some practical uses.
Hello Sir, thank you for sharing your content with us! What do you think of Monette mouthpieces for large bore tenor trombone?
Best,

@@LowBrassU what about my other question sir?
Thoughts on Griego, Greg Black and Hammond mouthpieces?

They are surprisingly close in weight but the distribution of that weight makes a sizeable difference.
@@LowBrassU Interesting. Is more of the weight on the classic blank at the top compared to the heritage blank?
@@mr.starfish4965 Yes it's something like that.

I have a 9bs and I like it for when I play my Conn 6h, although I don't play that horn in the real world anymore.

What would you say if better for low notes, the 0AL or the 1AL?
Its not that simple but I have both and specifically for low range the 0al is a bit easier for me but really both are good all around mouthpieces.

Maybe so...
As a tuba player, I think people tend to use mouthpieces that are too big.
There are definitely a few schools of thought but the important thing is that you play the right mouthpiece for you!
