40:59 Dear Kira, No. That is, just, some know-nothing fophead who, apparently, wants to type things out (although he or she has NO clue, has never researched, or even though about things for longer than 2 seconds! 🤬🤬👊👊👊👊) and watch people, read his, meaningless words on the internet and then tell his idiocies to a friend or something. 🤷 🙄🤦🤦 😡😡😡
"The Hammer" is, certainly, about the drug: heroin.
Lemmy despised it and knew that it WOULD end your life (he had seen it happen).
There IS, absolutely, a villain! (Yes!) There, absolutely, IS horror! (Yes!) ...but it is the personification of: H. That is what the song is expressing/dealing with/how it is addressing what it, actually, addresses.
...so: while it might be "couched in the typical" horror depiction: of a serial killer, the "serial killer" is: her*in. The *actual* subject of "The Hammer" is: drug abuse and, very specifically: horse.
That is the actual story. 🤘🤘

26:14 Yes, m'dear. The term "jailbait" was (probably, still is🤷 in some) a common colloquialism for: "und*ra*e female" --- and commonly, also: one who didn't appear or want to appear like/act like one. (a young teen playing older and 'more experienced')
...not, really, used to refer to anything ped*ph*lic [🤮🤮], but: yes, someone who was, still, under the age of c*ns*nt (whatever that was where you were).
Definitely sleazy (no question) and something which would be utterly disallowed, now 🙄
...but 🤷🤷a relatively common joke, point-of-discussion or reference (particularly in the '50s through the '70s).
      ...better get used-to it. 🤷😛
[I, actually, assumed that THAT was an expression most people had heard/would, just, recognize, but...🤷 ...apparently: "no."😛]

I was lucky enough to see Motorhead on their Ace of Spades tour before they became really popular. I had heard that Lemmy would talk to fans after the show, so my friends and I hung outside their tour bus. I'm sure he would rather have been hanging with some ladies, but he came out and talked a while and signed some ace of spades playing cards I brought with me. ("Fast" Eddie looked out the window and flipped us off!) RIP guys. And Kira, as long as you're listening to Ace of Spades, if you haven't already, please check out the B side to the single. It's a track called Dirty Love, and this may upset some fans, but I like it as much as the A side.

    • @gvehar
      @gvehar 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

I was going to say, she should add Dirty Love. It’s one of my favorites, it’s as good as anything on the album. When I was a kid I lived in the UK, and I bought the Motorhead Anthology, which is the most amazing collection. It featured crucial B-sides like Over The Top and Dirty Love, plus Louie Louie and quite a few Another Perfect Day tracks. No Overkill or We Are the Road Crew, but as a starter it was a great look at the band up to 1983.

Henry Rollins tells tales of his friendship with Lemmy. He was talking about how he was around for the birth of rock and roll.
Lemmy: "Yeah I saw the Beatles in the little club before they were big. Eh they were not bad"
    Henny: What! You think!
Lemmy was a great musician and from all reports a great human being.
He was one of a kind.

    Motorhead timeline for beginners:
In 1975, UK bassist Ian 'Lemmy' Kilmister was fired from the band Hawkwind... He returned to England and formed the rock trio Motorhead w/ Larry Wallis (guitar) and Lucas Fox (drums) ... Lemmy became the vocalist & bassist because 'it was cheaper'.
'Motorhead' was the title of a Hawkwind song written by Lemmy...
Motorhead recorded an album in 1976 but it was rejected by Hawkwind's record label United Artists... The tapes were released in 1979 as the Motorhead album 'On parole' after the band started becoming famous.
Motorhead recruited Phil 'Philthy Animal' Taylor (drums) and 'Fast' Eddie Clarke (guitar) by 1977, replacing Fox and Wallis... This was the classic Motorhead line-up w/ Lemmy (vocals & bass)... In 1978, they recorded their debut album ('Motorhead') for Chiswick Records in the UK, which had the same tracks as the record w/ Fox & Wallis... Bronze Records signed Motorhead after their cover of 'Louie Louie' became a UK hit, shocking the critics.
In 1979, Motorhead released the album 'Overkill'... followed by 'Bomber'... that same year.
In 1980, 'Ace of Spades' became Motorhead's first top 5 album on the UK charts... Their live album 'No sleep til Hammersmith' in 1981 charted at #1 in the UK charts... However, after their 1982 album 'Iron Fist'... Motorhead parted ways w/ guitarist Eddie Clarke as they toured the US, ending the classic line-up.
Brian 'Robbo' Robertson (guitar) from Thin Lizzy joined Motorhead and recorded the album 'Another perfect day' in 1983 but fans hated the new guitarist and it failed commercially... Robertson quit in 1984 and drummer Philthy also left Motorhead.
Motorhead regrouped in 1985 as a quartet w/ Lemmy joined by 2 new guitarists - Mick 'Wurzel' Burston & Phil 'Zoom' Campbell, and Pete Gill (drums)... They toured for Motorhead's 10th anniversary and released 'No remorse'... a collection of Motorhead classics and new studio tracks. They released a full album 'Orgasmatron' in 1986 before drummer Pete Gill was fired.
Philthy (drums) rejoined Motorhead in 1987 for the album "Rock n' roll"... and live album 'No sleep at all' in 1988.
Motorhead were forced to leave the UK for tax problems and parted ways w/ longtime manager Douglas Smith... Lemmy settled in L.A.
In 1991, Motorhead released the album '1916'... which was nominated for a Grammy... The band fired drummer Philthy soon after.
Motorhead were financially struggling when they recorded the album 'March or die' in 1992 w/ Mikkey Dee (drums) joining the band (Tommy Aldridge played drums on the record)... Their 1993 album 'Bastards' was a shot against the music industry.
In 1995, guitarist Wurzel left Motorhead... he was never replaced as Motorhead recorded the album 'Sacrifice'... Motorhead became a trio again w/ Lemmy, Phil Campbell on guitar and Mikkey Dee on drums for the rest of their career.
Motorhead consistently toured and released the albums - 'Overnight sensation' (1997)... 'Snake bite love' (1998)... 'We are Motorhead' (2000)... 'Hammered' (2002) ... Their album 'Inferno' (2004) took off in sales and gave Motorhead a successful record after decades.
They saw their demand on tour and record sales rise significantly w/ the albums - 'Kiss of death' (2006) ... 'Motorizer' (2008)... 'The world is yours' (2010)... and 'Aftershock' (2013)
Despite Lemmy's failing health, Motorhead released 'Bad Magic' (2015) - their final record, and toured that year.
Late in 2015, Lemmy turned 70 and was diagnosed w/ cancer... He passes away shortly after... Motorhead called it quits.
In 2017, Motorhead released a collection of cover songs - 'Under cover'... which included a cover of Metallica's 'Whiplash' which won Motorhead a Grammy.
Because of their live reputation, Motorhead has had quite a few live albums released since their inception.

That sound is a percussion instrument called a "Vibra-Slap." often used by SFX folks in films to make the sound of a Rattler!
We had one in the percussion section in my High School marching band. Fun to play with, but in four years, we never did a song that gave us the opportunity to use it.

That weird bit of feedback that starts at 21:45 in the "We Are The Road Crew" solo happened because Fast Eddie was recording the solo while under the influence of ... something... and ended up falling flat on his back in the studio. They kept recording while he got up off the floor and went back into his solo. You got odd bits like that in the first couple of albums. Philthy's countdown at the start of "Jailbait" is another one. And of course the mistimed into to "Bite the Bullet" when Lemmy started before everyone was ready.

Each of their cowboy outfits were based on different type of Western protagonist. Eddie was based on Clint Eastwood's character, The Man with No Name from the Dollars Trilogy. Phil's costume was based on Marlon Brando's character Rio in One-Eyed Jacks. Lemmy's costume was claimed by Phil to be inspired from Bret Maverick from the TV show Maverick.

Yeah, I shudder to think how young Lemmy went. The thing that I try to keep in mind is that if you don’t have peers telling you it’s wrong, then it’s unlikely you’ll challenge your own judgement. Those peers didn’t really exist in the 70’s from what I understand. If anything you’d probably get a pat on the back from someone.
I also truly believe Lemmy never made anybody do anything they didn’t want to do. Just doesn’t add up with his beliefs. The ladies went to him backstage and knew what his favorite pastime was.

No Sleep ' Til Hammersmith, is a live album from this period, it catches the whole essence of Motorhead, and it is a must listen, they were the most extreme band live circa 79/80!

To me, this is the album that has the most perfect cover-sound combination possible. The western-biker-punk clothing is amazing. Back in 2015, the year I went to my first and only Motörhead concert, I listened to this entire album EVERY day. This last year was the first year that I beat my listening time from 2014, mainly listening to post-1982 albums. Thanks for reacting to this album!!
It's good that you started listening to their later stuff (Overnight Sensation), because you won't become one of those "the REAL motorhead ended in 1982" boomers lol. Hopefully you listen to Another Perfect Day album soon, it's the one that sent the band back into the shadow real after the Three Amigos lineup was no more and people were PISSED at their new guitar player and sound. But time made justice to that album, and now everyone loves it. I'm sure you will too!!
After a couple more studio albums It would be cool to do a live one. No Sleep Til Hammersmith was their biggest success (an overnight sensation, number 1 on the charts) and it would make sense to listen to it (it's also remastered!) but there are other REALLY good live albums. What can you do, the band had a 40-year career without any duds.
There are also the books-okay that's enough, you take care, lady, and keep listening to this fantastic band!!

Worth noting that Lemmy was, by all accounts, a gent in real life, and actually quite modest about himself in interviews. So I think some of the lyrics were stylistic bravado. Doesn't make them alright by today's understanding, of course. Also, Lemmy did a lot to support female bands, most notably Girlschool! He was critical of the sexist way the music industry treated female musicians, not taking them seriously.

Hey, I like your reactions, you're one of the few ones, where I feel, like I am just chilling with a friend listening to music :) just honesty, no pretense, no bs overreactions.
Just want to chime in with a suggestion - I haven't found any Gojira in your library, and I think especially with the recent death metal journey, they definitely deserve some attention. I'd start with Magma, L'Enfant Sauvage or even From Mars To Sirius, if you like to get reeealy heavy

My first listen to Motörhead in 1980. Heard from the band in 1977. At a age of 3 - 5. Behind the iron curtain. If you didn't react to, here's a list:
Blondie - Eat To The Beat
    The Police - Outlandos D'Amour
    Ramones - Rocket To Russia
    Judas Priest - British Steel
Black Sabbath - Heaven And Hell
Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard Of Ozz
    Krokus - Metal Rendez-Vous
    Accept - Restless & Wild

You're right about the themes of Motorhead lyrics changing over the years. They really follow the trajectory of Lemmy's professional life in a way. He was kind of old for Motorhead, because that was his second major band. He had been kicked out of Hawkwind for being busted for drugs while on tour with them. Motorhead struggled to even get a record made, and the lyrics for the first few albums showed a lot of bitterness. They were on an upswing when Ace of Spades was made, which I think are reflected in his more confident lyrics. The lyrics for the next album - Iron Fist were written by a guy on top of the musical world. The terrible engineering of that album caused it to fail, and with that Motorhead lost their momentum. The lyrics grew darker after that...

The takes I read on jailbait say that Lemmy was making a satirical comment on practices of fellow musicians in the genre.

If you're loving this, I recommend their album "Another Perfect Day." It's my favorite of theirs and though it was commericaly panned, I think i has their most varied work and represents a good swath of their sounds over their career. It also features Brian "Robbo" Robinson after he left thin Lizzy and "Fast" Eddie Clarke left Motorhead.
Also, Lemmy's Birthday party in the 90's had Metallica perform as a band called "the Lemmys" and they all each dressed up as Lemmy to perform a set of all Motorhead covers, some appear on the 2nd disc of Garage Inc. they played more songs than were included on the covers album, some from this very album including "Shoot You In the Back", "Chase Is Better than the Catch" and "We Are the Road Crew." there are bootlegs of questionable quality floating around TH-cam if you want to give them a shot.

I guess you're kind of right that no other song off "Ace of spades" "exploded" like the title track. However, "We are the road crew" is the second most popular song on the album, by a considerable margin. After that, I'd say it's probably touch and go between "Jailbait" (one of Lemmy's personal faves) and "The chase is better than the catch" - the latter sometimes introduced on stage as "The face is better than the snatch" (tee hee).

I'd recommend giving a listen to 'Another Perfect Day' from 1983 if you want to continue on with your Motörhead journey. It's an album that often gets overlooked in the band's catalogue and I personally think it's great, from start to finish - a bit of a different sound though, you can feel the shift after Eddie's departure and Robbo joining the band. Less punk, more heavy metal.

You'll really appreciate the bass especially. There's a video on TH-cam of it, but if I link to it the comment will get zapped. It's on the channel of a user by the name of Moog Bass

"Jailbait" was more about the issue of female fans who made their way into his bed and didn't mention being underage, as opposed to him particularly looking for underage girls. Now the Ted Nugent song "Jailbait" is a whole other animal, with the lyric "I don't care that your just thirteen", going right along with his gaining legal guardianship of a 17-year-old Hawaiian girl so she could live with him.

Male subcultures are about defiance and refusal to compromise. Skinhead is a very masculine, very fuck-you look. It was the same with the classic Heavy Metal look in the NWOBHM period of denim and leather jackets and long hair. You were refusing to hide, and refusing to compromise. "We love the music you hate, and we want you to know". That's what Motorhead always makes me think of. I had a musically normie friend once who got dragged to a Motorhead concert, and he said it was like being drenched in denim, that as soon as they started playing, you had to be denim. They're all commitment and their sound is completely uncompromising. You get a similar thing ever since in the Hardcore Punk scene, but that's less specific, lookwise. The same defiance, aggression and refusal to compromise though.
