INFO & LINKS: The trip took 1hr 20mins approx, I left the airport at 3.55pm. I waited 15 minutes for the train at Lat Krabang but there is a timetable online. COST: Airport Rail Link train to Lat Krabang 15 baht, Train from Lat Krabang to Asoke 6 Baht, 136 bus from Makkasan to Asoke Sukhumvit 8 Baht. It's not ideal with heavy suitcases or young children! Proper backpackers should enjoy it, saving the cash and seeing the ''real'' Thailand!

    • @BangkokPat
      @BangkokPat  ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@benmontjo Asoke Halt station is under the Makkasan Airport Rail Line station. So you have 3 stations in Makkasan all next to eachother with different names! MRT Petchaburi, ARL Makkasan, SRT Asoke Halt. To get to Asoke BTS you need to take the MRT one stop to Sukhumvit Station, which is next to asoke BTS. Confused?

I'll just stick with the airport express to Makkasan MRT Sukhumvit/Asoke then a stroll from there, I don't bring hold bags. Tho it's a great backpacker intro. Agreed!

@@julianl4430 I know , as that’s the only way of getting a cab out of the airport. But as soon as you get in the car they will tell you they will look after you and take you into Bangkok for 500-600 Baht., which is why I always get the train from now on. On my recent trip, I was shocked that a Taxi Driver who picked me up early Sunday morning from Sanam Pao to take me to the airport, switched on his meter without me asking! It was a quick, 40 min run to the airport, which ended up costing only 240 Baht.

Tip: If you are hungry or thirsty inside of BKK airport, take the escalator down to the second floor. It's casual food court (need Thai currency) You are able to eat lunch/dinner for 60-80 baht with 20-40 baht drinks. The same floor has bus kiosk going to Jomtien Beach as well for 151 baht I believe.

Depending on how much luggage you have, switching to the MRT at Makkasan for 1 stop to Sukhumvit can be easier than going all the way to Phaya Thai on the ARL if you're staying around lower Sukhumvit. If you're staying in upper Sukhumvit, Ramkamhaeng station will bring you out around Phra Kanong Soi 71.

Another great video Pat. I recently travelled on the Airport Link from Lad Krabang to Maakasan. I saw two young European girls looking a little lost. They'd just arrived from Germany and were travelling before starting uni, back in Germany. They wanted to go to Klong Toei but wanted to save money by taking the bus! I took them down to the MRT and bought them two tickets to Klong Toei, for their safety as much as anything else.

Years ago there used to be special buses from the airport that would take you various parts of Bangkok including Sukhamvit Road. The buses went from the ground floor next to the food court, tickets were cheap as well. I remember it would drop you off anywhere on Sukhamvit Road you required , brilliant ! A lot less hassle than changing 3 times on the BTS transit system.

To see, all those non tourist spots, gives me so many emotions about Thailand and Bangkok….I love this place, serious…I don‘t like germany (I‘m german)….I give zero shit to fake polished cities like munich or wannabe divers cities like berlin…
Bangkok…each klong, cat and smile of some locals tells me „you are welcome here“.
I even buy all my stuff rather in bangkok than here…not because the prices are cheaper (no they are not (mostly)).
Walking in the rain with an umbrella like an old victorian gentleman, listening to scooter engines (they calm me down), eat some papaya, play pool with some strangers who share common interests…
If I could, I would instantly migrate to Bangkok…learn the language, learn some local habits and stuff.
Perhaps future home-office rules can make it possible to stay at least 2-3 month there…who knows.

Great video Pat .... but you know what it is like when you first arrive in a new country, you are jet lagged, disorientated, you can’t read the signage which is all in Thai along the local routes, the entrance for the railway station is a classic side door and then if you got on the wrong train by mistake, you would probably have to get a taxi from where ever you ended up..  … I think I would have to just catch a cab until I got my bearings.

A fun way to travel, using three forms of transport, but not when you have luggage!
The ARL to Makkasan, and MRT from Phetchaburi to Sukhumvit would cost not much more (35 + 16 = 51bahts), and without the hassle of waiting for the irregular SRT train and the risk of missing the Asoke Halt stop which has no station building.
Do it only if you have time to kill, and no luggage!

This is a brilliant upload! Buses, trains & planes.... what's not to like?..... lol How old are those buses? They look interesting especially with that wooden floor. The whole trip for 29bht, that's 75p in UK money, just less than half the fare for one London bus ride...... I have made several rail journeys in Thailand, i found the Mae Klong line to be the most rickerty, at times i thought we were going to come off the track even though we were only doing around 25mph.......

My first trip to Bangkok in 2013 I learned online that I could go to the lowest floor of the airport, catch the express train (no longer in service I think) to Makkasan station, then down the stairs to the MRT, and one stop to Asoke. About 1/2 hour, and under $2. Done that trip (except now city train) both ways many times.

Unless your Thai GF's family give you a free lift. But then they might want to see you off and your lovely GF suggests having a meal for everyone while you wait for your flight, at your expense of course. I learned long ago that the Airport Link train or even a taxi is much cheaper than a free ride from family. 😊

Or for $2.26 (45+37= THB82) you could take the ARL + BTS from the Airport to Asoke BTS station via Phayathai ARL & BTS stations. Very convenient if you have luggage. Or for slightly cheaper at $1.40 (35+16=THB51) but more sweaty, with longer distances lugging baggage around between train stations you could take the ARL to Makkasan and traipse down to the MRT Petchburi station for one stop to the MRT Sukhumvit Station at Asoke.

Good one Pat. Going off the beaten track half the fun at times, but not so sure with luggage + lag. Two days ago, did ARL to Makasan, then MRT to Sala Daeng after a flight from Chiang Mai. ARL (Airport), reasonably full, which became packed when picking up the locals from the "in between" stations. Are there express ARL's as this won't work if / when tourist numbers increase. Maybe there's another 'cunning' plan in place for when this happens. Did enjoy the experience, although a lot more fun as an outing without the luggage would be the go. Cheers
