Here is a brief story of ‘Telangana Sona’ rice variety and its benefits for consumers like you and me, farmers who grow our rice and the millers/traders who process the grains. ‘Telangana Sona’ or RNR- 15048, is a fine grain, short duration, blast resistant high yielding rice variety suitable for both Rabi and Kharif (vanakalam and yasangi ) seasons and having low glycemic index.
Telangana Sona rice variety is developed by PJTSAU, Rice Research Centre, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad and approved by State Varietal release committee in the year 2015 and registered with PPV & FR.in the year 2018.
*Why is GI index important for consumers of rice?.
Glycemic index, is a value assigned to foods based on how quickly or slowly these foods cause an increase in blood glucose levels. A high GI food increases blood glucose levels quickly and a low one at a relatively low rate
Green vegetables, most fruits, chickpeas etc., classified under low GI, sweet corn, bananas, multigrain, oat bran etc., under medium GI and white bread, white rice and potatoes fall under high GI. Eating rice can quickly raise blood glucose to very high levels as it contains a lot of carbohydrates thus increasing insulin resistance and it becomes hard to control blood sugar.
Telangana Sona rice with G.I value of 51.3 (Low) is an ideal choice as a healthy alternative for everybody but even more so for those of us who suffer from Type - 2 diabetes. Low G.I implies that rice once digested releases its energy slowly keeping blood sugar levels more stable, which is a crucial part of health management for diabetic patients.
*What are the benefits to Producers/ Farmers?
RNR 15048 is a short duration crop with 125 days to yield variety. Farmers have the opportunity of raising green manure crops before the rice seedlings are sown in July, thus improving the soil health and reducing usage of chemical fertilizers by 15-20 percent.
The variety inherently has blast resistance, which is a major disease in effecting most of the rice growing areas. Farmers were able to save Rs.1500-2000 per acre on plant protection costs.
Telangana Sona can also be harvested 20-25 days early compared to other varieties, hence there is also saving of water and quicker return on investment for farmers .
*What are the benefits to the Millers /Traders?
The head rice recovery (an important trait to miller) in Telangana Sona is Excellent (67.9% to 70%). Telangana Sona, polished rice has length: 4.44mm, Breadth 1.30mm with L/B ratio 3.41 with attractive Kernel color thus fetching premium price.
