I live in a cold climate so when I build my greenhouse (14x25) I put it very close to my coop so the chickens could use it as a winter run. They are comfortable and happy even at -18C! And I grow all kinds of hot season crops in it all summer by closing that door and keeping them out.
It's been around -25F (wind chill) here in NE Ohio the last 2 nights. I've put out regular straw & hay in the run to keep the girls busy. I want to try the chopped straw! Each morning I put cayenne pepper in their feed & each evening they get cracked corn or scratch grains to help keep them warm. All are doing well! Some of the Golden Comets hesitate to come out of the coop, but our crazy Buff Orpingtons just trudge through the snow! LOL!
Thank you so much for this suggestion!! I ran out and got one bale the girls are going to town! I noticed that there's been a lot more bullying going on because it's been so terribly cold here, but this should give them a level of comfort and activity they didn't have before.
Lol, this was a great video! I just love watching you love your chickens! If I had some of my own, I would certainly get them some of this straw and put it out for them to play in! They would have a blast! You're the best!! ❤
In Canada we have a product called Straw Boss which is very similar to the one you talk about. I put a layer down in their run and leave a pile of it for them to scratch through. I put their seeds and other treats in it. It keeps them busy. They love it.
That's where I get my hemp and coarse straw. I added the straw this summer and it works great. Good place to hide their scratch and worms that I throw out on the really cold days. Thanks for sharing.
We live in Maine. I’ve used straw since i first got chickens!! I heard an older farmer say he put shavings down then straw. I change it every week (weather permitting.). I haven’t had any issues with parasites or fighting among the birds. They have a smaller run in winter, because they refuse to go out when there is snow on the ground. Prissy… even with a shoveled path. They are still fun, and we just started getting eggs again.
Always use straw for bedding and add every couple weeks so they've always got fresh straw on top

Cold 😂😂😂❤. It was -32C last night. My biggest issue has been with frostbite this winter, especially with my Rooster Kramer. Poor guy has really been hit hard by it this year. Much love from Canada for everything you share. Take care everyone 🐓❤️😊
A great way to create simple and cheap outdoor shelters is to use tarps to make a lean-to against a fence or coop. I got mine from Dollarama and they're still in one piece after enduring 4 ft of snow, 65kmph winds, and turkeys trying to climb them.
Greenhouse panels are amazing for letting in the sun heat and keeping out the weather. I have it on two of my little coops and they are really warm while the sun is shining.
My chickens had some warm oatmeal, and I mixed in some scratch and peck herbs and black soldier fly. My girls are all doing very good, thanks to you, the President of chicken landia.❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you for the tips Dalia! 😊 7:20 LOL! My chickens do that too and then it all gets snowed on, silly birds. I get my straw from my neighbor who grows organic grains. His straw isn't chopped really fine, which is great for me. Sometimes on warm days I like to give them chunks of pumpkin, and that keeps them busy. I can't do that on cold days though since they freeze.
I still can't get over how adorable Monkey and the other (naked neck/game bantam) crosses are! but yeah, as someone from a snowy climate (UT!), I 100% agree with the tip of adding chopped straw to the chickens' outdoor runs. (I used to use it in my deep litter inside and outside, but I ended up trying the hemp bedding for inside after watching your videos and now I wish I had started that a very long time ago lol.)
We just had 4 inches of snow in THE PANHANDEL OF Fl. This never happens here. My girls did not want to even come out of there in closed run to the outer yard. We new the storm was coming so I put a lot of extra bedding in there.
Oh, you're so right. My chickens love that thinly chopped straw. They have been digging in it and playing in it. I put it quite deep inside their large coop. For the winter, it's been very cold.I'm not too far away from it's your area in washington.
wouldn't the chopped straw hold moisture if it gets wet? I would think it would make getting frostbitten feet more likely if so. My run is covered, but does get some mini streams running through it when snow melts or it rains heavy. It isn't all wet, but has those issues from time to time. I have seen my crazy girls deliberately walk in the water instead of staying up on the higher dry spots ugh. Would love an option to keep their little feet from getting wet in the cold.
If it's well ventilated the moisture shouldn't cause too much of a problem. have you tried putting pallets or pavers over the wet areas to give them a raised area to stand on? If it's not too much water, you could use pine pellets to soak up the water as well.

Good tips! Your sense of humor is fun and the way you are with your girls is awesome too. I love my girls as well. Just remember, they are Not spoiled, they are opinionated! Lol
I was talking about hay, not straw. ❤️ Hay is animal feed and while the big intact bales can offer some insulation in a covered run I don’t recommend hay for bedding in the coop.
I've only ever used hemp bedding in the run and Coop as I am worried about bumblefoot. I read that straw can make it a bit easier for them to get bumblefoot. Have you seen that in your experience? I'd love to get them this, but I'm scared of the dreaded bumblefoot.
I'm sorry that's happening. It's a virus so hopefully your flock can just push through it and then be okay. They will always have it but once they get through the initial infection it will hopefully be dormant unless they become vulnerable in another way such as age, stress, and/or illness.

Carolina coops is where I learned hemp for coop, hay for nests and straw for bedding. Wood chips are great for paths and muddy areas.

I use Stand Lee chopped straw from Tractor Supply, but recently they are out & they have the Straw Boss too & I love it

I'm not a fan of store bought shavings or chips but I have a small woodchipper from Walmart and they love the natural chips I make with it.

Eggs? I'm jealous! ❤
We're getting eggs too!
Love our Carolina Coop!! It was a ‘gift’ from my husband 😊. We use that same straw!! Excellent choice!
Wow, that's an awesome gift!

We use straw in the cold winter months too. December-March it works really well. Great advice as usual! 🙂🐓❤
The weather in WA this year just will not follow the rules, dangit. We're gonna pay for all of the sunshine later...
It's been crazy! I'm ready for Spring!
Our windchill got to -23F last night here in Michigan. My ladies are doing OK, but I still worry. Thanks for the tips!

6+ inches of snow…. In Florida. They got cooked oatmeal this morning.
SIX INCHES?? What part of Florida? I lived in a few different places out there.

@ wow!! I lived on the East coast side and we definitely did not get snow! That’s wild!
Where did you get your net for the top of your chicken coop
I got it from a place called Pinnon Hatch Farms. Tell them I sent you so they will sponsor me LOL!
Im in Australia but ive sent this to my daughter in Tucson. Thank you Dahlia. 💖🌸
Thank you for the tip!!
When I put straw in the chicken run my chickens also spread the straw outside
My chickens are crazy and don't mind being out in the rain & cold, until it gets really heavy. We don't get snow here though (Australia).
I love Carolina Coops. It’s gonna be my choice of coop when I finally am able to get chickens!
I want one SO bad
I got my first chickens this last Summer, a rooster and four hens. Thank you for showing us how much fun having chickens can be!!🐓
Get more hens ,that roosters gonna tear them girls backs up...10 hens per 1 rooster so he's not constantly going after the same hens...
Good tips! Your sense of humor is fun and the way you are with your girls is awesome too. I love my girls as well. Just remember, they are Not spoiled, they are opinionated! Lol

Does it have to be chopped stray? I have unchopped
No, it really doesn't. I like chopped straw because it breaks down faster but regular straw will be fine!
Could you do a video on ilt and what to do when diagnosed? Thanks 😢

Where did you find the metal chicken run? I'm having a hard time finding one that can have an open side to butt up to the coop like yours does.
I wonder if you could get a large dog kennel. Just leave the ends off and put a tarp up the sides and over the top.
I got them from Tractor Supply. I think the company is called Rustic Ranch. And I just left one of the panels off so I could attach it to the coop!
Thank you honey
I'm going to cook up some oatmeal
I put compressed bags of wood shavings around the coops to give them a space.... Not all of the chickens take advantage of it.
Good tip! I need this for my girls but I can only find chop Alfalfa locally... will they pig out too much if I use in place of chop straw?
That would be good
I thought the chopped straw was for warmth?!? What do I know since I don't have any chickens ...
Can you get regular straw? That would be better than the hay. They will definitely eat some of it but the main thing is it's just not very absorbant.
Stay warm brr is sure cold out there
Dew-bwahz
I came here to say exactly this! But I probably would have spelled it "Doo Bwahhh" LOL. Like Blanche DuBois... In "A Streetcar Named Desire" LOL.
