Gemmy Prototype Animated Rocky the Lobster with Different Songs

- This video is from May, 2000. Once we knew Billy Bass was going to be huge, we created a whole line of singing, mounted wildlife to take advantage of the momentum. Almost all of these additions sold very well. Retailers couldn't get enough and were jumping on everything we created.
This is the first prototype of the lobster. We weren't sure of the songs initially and eventually put "Rock the Boat" by the Hues Corporation (part of the song at the end) and Sea Cruise. Sea Cruise was originally done by Johnny Rivers I believe, but I knew the John Fogerty version. I could never get any Fogerty songs (I tried, even talked to his brother to try to convince them), but he didn't write this one so I jumped on it.
We had the songs in the video already programmed and we needed to put something in the lobster to see the movement. These songs are "Doo Wah Diddy" by Manfred Mann. "Take Me To The River" and "Don't Worry, Be Happy". So we used the ic chip from Billy Bass. The programming should be exactly the same as Billy, but going up/down instead of side to side. - บันเทิง
Interesting how it uses a Travis the singing trout plaque. Thanks for sharing Joe!
Don’t worry be happy
oh neat
no sea cruise?
Cool
Did you work on any of the well known dancing such as the hip-swingers or the shake-it-up santa? Also, were you involved in making the snowflake-spinning snowmen aswell as the bell-swingin' santa?
Can you give some info on the 2000 billy bass return?
Joe why is the big head monster so faulty?
I don’t think John Fogerty ever did a cover of “Sea Cruise” you might be thinking of “Proud Mary” which he wrote and sang during his time with Creedence. I know that Frankie Ford was the original writer of Sea Cruise, but Johnny Rivers eventually did a cover in the 70’s.
I have an mp3 of Fogerty singing Sea Cruise.
@@joep5300 I looked it up and was pleasantly surprised to see that there is a version of him singing Sea Cruise. I’m honestly a bit surprised that I didn’t know about it as someone who’s a Fogerty fan. It’s a really good one too!
Sea Cruise is by Frankie Ford Actually
May I ask why you didn’t use the most well known versions of songs for items? Like for instance: the Bobby McFerrin version of Don’t Worry be Happy. I do actually like the versions or remakes on the items more than the originals most of the time.
We re-recorded almost every song. If you use the original artist, your licesning costs double. We get the rights to the songs. We did use originals in the pop culture because it needed to be in their voice.
Do you know any prototypes of the snowflake snowman’s? It would be great to hear them if so!
Does this mean Lucky The Lobster was made first before Rocky?
Probably. But as far I know, that was made for Sunstar Industries, not Gemmy.
@@Gemmygod Sunstar was the main Gemmy distributor at the time. They got Lucky from Gemmy. We must have tried a different name at one point. I don't know which one came first
@@joep5300 Lucky is the one on the Billy Bass wood plaque that sings Do Wah Diddy Diddy like some versions of Rocky and Travis the Trout
Joe, do you happen to know the item # or any backstory on the rapping version of the Pop culture porky pig?
I don't remember it
How did you resist the urge to not use Rock Lobster?
We tried. The B52's didn't want to give out the publishing rights.
@@joep5300At least a knockoff company made one which is rare nowadays.
@@secondbestsull7541Bootleg companies do it because they're "anonymous" ofc that doesn't stop them from getting sued by bigger record labels
It's a shame you weren't able to get the rights any of John Fogerty's songs at the time, because one of the Billy Bass inspired knockoffs Large Mouth Lou uses a live cover of Clearance Clearwater Revival's "Proud Mary", with John as the lead singer. Maybe it's because John didn't have as much of a say in getting permission to use the songs in animated items from the time he was with CCR. I don't know.
They didn't get the rights to the song, they used it anyway. Plus they used a master recording which they didn't pay for either. A lot of knock-offs aren't going to bother with licensing rights, they're in for a quick buck. When they get caught, they shut down their company and start a new one.
Cool
