It's Official: Trump Air Force One Livery Gets Scrapped By Biden Administration

  • It's been about a year and a half since Biden took office as the United States' 46th President. With the inauguration taking place in the middle of a pandemic, the question of the future livery of the upcoming Air Force One was far from a priority. However, being held in suspense on this issue, there’s finally confirmation that the current administration will not be going with the dark blue paint scheme proposed by the previous president.

    The color scheme designed in the ear of JFK is iconic. It has been around longer than I have been alive and is known world-wide. But it also goes beyond the 747s. There are many jets painted in that same color scheme. For instance, when Bill Clinton was in office, he visited wild fire ravaged Idaho. I lived in the small community he visited. He took the 747 from D.C. to Boise, got on a small commuter type jet which was painted identically. So in theory, if the paint scheme is changed on one aircraft, all others would have to be painted to match, and apparently, there are a lot within the executive livery.

      That was probably the vice-presidential plane, Boeing C-32 (modified 1998 B-757) aka 'Air Force Two'. This plane is usually used by the vice-president, sometimes by another important government figures like the secretary of state, and also by the president if the runway the president is landing on or taking off from can't support the 747. The 757 incidentally has excellent take-off characteristics for it's size. There is also a bunch of Gulfstream Jets and a B-737, but those aren't painted in the same paint scheme.

      @davidpassage2768 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@jamiesuejeffery The USAF 89th Special Air Missions Wing, at Andrews AFB, outside Washington DC, which supports Executive Branch and Congressional travel, has a bunch of smaller aircraft than the two VC-25s (747-equivalents) -- several VC-32s (757-equivalents, which are used by Secretary of State Blinken and other Cabinet members and Congressmen and Senators on official travel) as well as even smaller aircraft right down to various models of Gulfstreams when larger aircraft are not required or need to use smaller runways/airfields. Now that the current B-747-200s (no longer used in passenger service by any airline in the world) are about to be replaced by the two new 747-8i jets, the Air Force's next project is soon going to have to be to look for replacements for the VC-32s (757s) which are also aging and increasingly difficult/costly to maintain and operate.

    • @mrjon1985
      @mrjon1985 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No other plane is painted the same as the two VC-25s. Similar, yes, but that sky blue is unique to them, as well as the polished aluminum portion just forward of the wing on the fuselage (which is very labor intensive to keep shiny). A dark color that low on the fuselage will have little to no effect on heat. If the rest of the fleet was to be painted the same scheme, it'd just be done next time the go in for repaint, which is quite regular. I'm not crazy about Trump's paint scheme but their excuses are pretty lame. Purely political

      I’m not you sure know this, based on your comment but the US doesn’t need “branding” but if it did, using a style that’s 60 years old is not how successful branding works. Every well known brand does regular branding changes from the more subtle McDonalds with their catch phrase changes and store remodels to more obvious rebranding efforts such as Harley-Davidson. Show me one airline that doesn’t regularly change their livery as they change marketing plans of new product offerings. If branding is important then you should want a new livery, frankly anyone who doesn’t is probably not very brand savvy to begin with.

    I'm not a fan of 45 and even though it's a blatant upside down copy of the Trump Airlines livery i liked it.
    The only argument they should have stuck to was that it was cancelled due to cost overruns. The paint temperature argument sounds like a weak excuse.

    Personally, I liked the Trump livery. It looks classy. The Kennedy era livery, while exciting in 1962, is rather boring now.
    I am retired and have no inside knowledge of what is going on with this program. However, the dark paint might be a nuclear hardness qualification issue. The paint on hardened aircraft such as AF1 is expected to ablate away in case of a nearby nuclear detonation, thus exposing the white heat reflecting primer underneath. I don't recall the dark blue being used on hardened aircraft in the past. It may have run into some sort of issue during the ablation testing.

    Good decision. The whole world noes this livery. Its connected to AF1.
    The other had also "by accident" a great likeness with Trump's previous own airplanes.
    No need to be reminded in his administration period all the time.
    The livery should be administration independent. Keeping the old one is doing exactly that.
