- She's been away for flipping ages, climbing mountains, visiting Somalian refugees in Ethiopia, and figuring out how to follow up her fresh and brilliant 2008 debut. We took our camera to meet Santigold to talk about her new album Master Of My Make-Believe, the amusingness of bodily gasses, why she hasn't had a number one single yet and all our usual nonsense about animals and stuff. We look forward to interviewing her again in another four years!

Is it really necessary to make a point of her skin color? We know that she's intelligent, smart and beautiful but if you want to get technical she's half Mexican. Either way we're modern humans for fuck sake - we all have different skin color. Some of us come from good homes, some from bad homes, some are smart, some not so much and some continue to point out race which continues to separate everyone else.

I’ve been listening to Santigold for a year now. I love her music so much!! This is the first interview of her I have ever seen, and she is incredibly intelligent and levelheaded. It’s a shame that people like this don’t make it to #1 anymore, but I agree completely with what she said. Her songs will be in my memory for the rest of my life reminding me of this time right now. Some of the answers she gave, especially on the last few questions, echoed my thoughts almost down to the word, except she said it even better than I could have said it.
she's really insightful and down to earth, I'm definitely becoming a bigger fan having seen a bit of her personality and thoughtfulness. Most of the time I hear from musicians I like and I'm disappointed by their lack of articulation, especially when it comes to self awareness.
Man, I love her even more having now heard how switched-on and "real" she is.

Saw her at electric picnic here in Ireland a couple of years ago, she was really good, i like her music its very original and distinct.
Also, English is not MIA's first langauge, though she communicates fluently, she first learned to think in a different language and that can make a person communicate differently.

she is more beautiful and smarter than i even imagined. her music showed up on my pandora and i definitely liked it. it fit right into my weird playlist.

This video shows that she is one of the smartest and endearing artists out there right now. To not care what the status quo of artists is and not pretend that she doesn't care. The more I see and hear of her, the more I like her.

This is the first artist I can consider myself a fan of since 2Pac. She's got raw, beautiful songs for freedom and the spirit and she's very strong and intelligent. I wish our society would celebrate artists like her instead of these fake bitches.

She's hilarious and very truthful :) and yes alot of songs are watered down now :/ I like Beyonce and Lady gaga etc but idk.....I like there older stuff more :( also you are very right about how people blast down for being natural and all the fake boobs etc...and I think your songs are number 1 :)

They have extremely different backgrounds. Santigold came from a privileged American background- father was a lawyer and she went to a prep school, and MIA was a refugee who moved from different countries and lived in government housing. Also, and I think this is the BIGGEST difference, MIA is first and foremost a visual artist. And in my experience, there are often gaps between what they see and think to what they can verbalize. That is inherently why they are visual artists in the first place
I like Santigold because she's a black female artist that is showing the word she isn't stereotypical or what people automatically think a black female musician should be. Santigold is an intelligent woman and she refuses to be categorized as an R&B artist which is not fair her music crosses many genres!

4:29 Creator was a no. 1 single..bonafide. For whatever reason, the top companies insure that Justin Bieber, Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry and Gaga pretty much dominate the rotation. I just think she was ahead of the curve, very difficult to market. L.E.S. Artiste was one of Rolling stone's singles of the year, yet it was unnoticed. She's very particular about art work, and it is opposite of A&R position strategy.
