    I had a look at my roof and attic and I have 5 turbines 300 mm diam, but…. The soffit vents are only 1/3 of the turbines area , so do not forget to open up the air in to the attic, or it does not matter how many turbines you fit. I am am cutting a large hole at the entrance 2 ft x3 ft to increase the inlet area and I am fitting a grill that I can open and thereby install a hardboard to minimize and air circulation in the wintertime not to chill out the attic. I had over 125 f (55-60C) in the attic before I changed the situation. SoCal. (June , July ) now it’s only a difference if 10 deg C from the ambient air temp. Before over 30C, so my advice is also look in to the air in. My entrance is on the northern side and I think it’s a perfect location fro an inlet grill with a mesh for insects.

    My Dad God rest his soul installed Turbine Vents on our house! Later had Tin Roof installed & the roofer didn’t put them back on the house! I’ve always wondered did the roofer do more harm than GOOD!?!?!
    I’ve seen some jacked up applications all around! People stubborn bull headed & won’t listen to good advice!
    Unfortunately you have to let some people learn the hard way!
    Nothing like someone acting like they know more than you… but they called you to help them out!
    It’s why I don’t go out to everyone’s house anymore……. Bahahahhaha LOL!!!!!

    How does it effect life lifespan of a roof? Does it keep the shingles cooler? I wouldn't think so? Maybe the wood last longer?

      let's warm usually moist air out of the attic. If you live in a colder climate this can freeze if it doesn't circulate out. I think letting the warm air out (heat rises) will help with the roof and roof beams last and keep from rotting or decaying as opposed to shingles. I think, not a roofer just dealing with circulation issues myself last couple of winters in Saskatchewan :)

    What happens to a roof vent when there are strong winds of 80 km/h or more? Do the spin like crazy and get damaged? We have a lot of strong wind here.
    And what about heavy rain plus heavy wind? Doesn't the wind blow water into the vent's openings?

    Air actively drawn out of the attic needs to be replaced...often with expensive air conditioned air or expensive heated air from the house. Passive exhaust vents are best, as they leave the slow rising attic air largely in place doing its job moderating temperatures but you do need air intake vents in the soffits or on the lower roof. Active vents cost additional A/C and heating bills.

      @jamesbrooks4805 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’m curious, but why does an active system have to draw air from inside the house? How is that even possible? I’m in no way saying you are wrong. I’m just interested in cooling my attic some.

    sir what if the attic is either enclosed and insulated along the walls? would you still recommend venting over sealing the the area and just cooling it with the hvac? i've always kinda like the turbine vents just cause they give you a visual feedback on if they are working, clogged, or rusted to the point of inoperable. but either way if we turn that attic into a functional loft/storage room i for one would prefer to cool it along with the central air unit rather than leave it crazy hot and only just do the bare minimum to wisk away the heat buildup to avoid damaging. am i wrong? would this be a mistake if i were to implement something like that? just to clarify i'm not advocating throwing some insolation on the attic floor and then sealing it off. i'm advocating sealing it off after insolating the ceiling walls of the attic so that it basically becomes a sudo second floor or loft. i'm guessing that would keep it cool enough to avoid damage to the interior but i duno about the tiles and roof itself. having all that cool air in there would act to cool it a bit, but the insolation wouldn't allow much of the heat to transfer so it might just bake under the suns rays. i'm not a roofer but very interested in learning more. ty for any advice.

    • @Arcticatticfl
      @Arcticatticfl 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you have no intake venting (soffits), that's an issue in itself. You would have to cut some out if possible. Once that is complete, add a solar powered fan and you should be good to go.

    • @ProudVet-Russ
      @ProudVet-Russ 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Arcticatticfl i get why that would be important if the attic was uninsulated but if the attic roof was insolated, sheet rocked and turned into effectively a small 2nd story why would it need to be vented with soffits or fans? it would basically be the same as any interior room at that point which makes me wonder why it needs exterior venting when i don't think any exterior facing rooms have venting holes cut into them.
      i'm not understanding the why i guess and that's the most important component for me in understanding. why bother cutting in vents to let out air if you already have it insolated and cooled via an hvac system? to a laymen like myself that sounds like if this rule of thumb is true than shouldn't we also be needing to cut holes into all exterior facing rooms for the same reasons?

    • @Arcticatticfl

      @@ProudVet-Russ Yes, you are correct. I would spray foam the ceiling of your attic space. There is no need for fans

    Hello. I'm in Florida. Home has a ridge vent system and I'm trying to cool my attic down further since my AC forward and return vents run through the attic. I've read it's not recommended to install fans with a ridge vent system because you'll be pulling in outside air through the ridge vent. What would be a viable solution to cool down said attic? Thanks in advance.

      @@Aer0man07 thanks for the reply... Seems like a viable solution. Just need to save my lunch money as it runs pricey here in Florida. I wish I would've known about radiant barrier prior to going r-40 blown in. Probably radiant with a lower blown in r value would've been a better option. Thanks for confirming my suspicions.

      Unless your attic is properly vented - do no add anything to your inner sheathing to block the rooftop heat. Otherwise, you are likely to have shingle problems very soon. When heat cannot go inside the attic, it can only go out in the air. While it sounds great, but imagine how hot the shingles can get - they can buckle and easily melt off.
      The best bet is to add active vents - be solar ones or wired ones. You'll be surprised the difference it makes by adding enough active fans. Ridge vents and box vents are quite inefficient, turbine ones are better but still far inferior than the active vents.
      The concern of so-called sucking-in outside air from ridge vents are way overblown - in most hot days, the outside temperature are always a lot of cooler than the attic. So sucking in outside air still cools the attic - though may not as efficient than sucking in from soffits. This can be easily tested out - block the ridge vents (from inside )vs leave it open - when you have active vents.

    I have a question.
    I have 2 turbine vents and I have 2 gable vents and eve bird hole vents.
    I’m in the southwest.
    I’m thinking of installing an attic vent fan.
    My question is would it be best to install it on the gable vents or to install it firing upward through the turbine vents.
    Or not to do it at all. ??

      Based on my research for my house in the hills of southern california, the downsides of active vents outweigh the benefits. Air Pressure differentials are more effective at cooling the attic than forcing air flow with velocity. If your attic is poorly air sealed you may actually draw air conditioned air out from the living space. I assume your a/c ducts are in the attic if youre in the south, in which case higher air velocity from active vents can actually suck dust into the home by accentuating existing drafts. It should be said that every home build is different, and your specific biosphere will change things as well, but when your ambient air temp is generally between 60 - 80 degrees F, rarely will the roof deck ever be below 85 - 100 degrees just by the nature of the sun. The dilemma is no matter what the attic is going to be hot, keeping the heat from intruding into the rooms below is the real goal anyways, so unless the attic is a finished space or is properly air sealed, you have many factors stacked against you... hope this helps

      also what you call bird hole vents are actually called soffit vents, you will get a much better value of labor time and effectiveness just adding more ofthose
