I love how its all "3X PERFORMANCE" but, there isnt anything really to compare it with. Performance against what? the crippled i3, i5, i7 in the notebooks with no thermal solution whatsoever?.
On another note, they have indeed been dominating the phone market, the Bionic is currently the fastest mobile chip iirc, at least on benchmarks and such. At the end of the day, one would need to wait for actual third party reviews, with a beer on one hand to say goodbye definitely to any hope of being able to repair the notebooks now.
@@trw8777 from all the benchmarks I've seen the one on the top of the charts at least for geekbench and antutu are the bionic 13 and bionic 14, along with the top snapdragons SOC, kirin starts appearing after those.

1. Apple switching architecture just means one thing. None of the software you bought previously will work or be usable on day one.
2. Gaming? Apple currently using Intel hardware today only can play a small amount of titles on the steam platform, and that requires "steam-play", which; surprise! Won't work anymore because apple has dropped both Vulcan and openCL in favor of metal. An API only available for apple users. So bye bye to all the games on steam that are all x86 native.
Even with Rosetta 2, there is no way they can run the code at high enough speeds to justify the costs.
3. Tera-flops mean little, because ultimately speed of execution relies on the code. There are games in 2020 that barely run on top of the line 25 tera-flop GPU. The likely hood they'll make it fast and optimized enough for both platforms is dubious.
4. Apple's benchmarks suggest they are comparing "apples to apples" in the tinyest footnote on the M1 page you showed.
It states, "Testing conducted by Apple in October 2020 using preproduction MacBook Air systems with Apple M1 chip and 8-core GPU, as well as production 1.2GHz quad-core Intel Core i7-based MacBook Air systems, all configured with 16GB RAM and 2TB SSD. Tested with prerelease Final Cut Pro 10.5 using a 55-second clip with 4K Apple ProRes RAW media, at 4096x2160 resolution and 59.94 frames per second, transcoded to Apple ProRes 422. Performance tests are conducted using specific computer systems and reflect the approximate performance of MacBook Air."
This essentially means; it benched vs a 1060NG7 intel. A cpu so pathetically weak, that my Haswell I7-6800k from 2016 is nearly 2x as powerful versus it. And they compressed a 55 second clip into a not particularly hard to compress format.
It's as if saying I compressed raw audio to flac, in 5 seconds instead of 10, when I can compress it in 3 secs on older hardware.
So congrats to apple for making hardware that can dance with a 4 year old chip, but honestly it really isn't that impressive.
5. Who is this even for? like seriously, who even uses apple for professional work outside of purple haired creatures that inhabit twatter or other shitty blogging or pretending to be a novelist/journo/scriptwriter?
Most real Pro's I know are rocking affordable but monster systems, and aren't going to bother with a Crapple laptop.
As a person who dabbles in raytracing for animation and render tests 4K UHD to 16K, 16 GB max ram is not "professional", I regularly render scenes in blender that exceed that memory level. let alone when I mix and master sound, or edit video, or composite, or code.
Why would I spend 2000 dollars on a shitty baby laptop; when I could buy an AMD system with a great graphics card, and blow it out of the water?
Plus be able to use All of my windows, Linux software, Emulators that only run on x86, and that I can easily and ethically repair and reuse when I replace the Hardware for twice as fast silicon?
(granted I'm building a 3rd gen threadripper platform with 256 GB of ram, 2 24 gb Graphics cards that can do raytracing and neuralnet apps but my price tag there is @ 6 grand, And that's for a system that is pound for pound more powerful than every macintosh ever made, which at high ends are 20,000 dollars.)
Bottom line, spending 2000 dollars for a glitzy high end apple iphone, that you can't hack or service without effectively paying apple tax sounds like people aren't doing their research on how much of a scam apple is.
But that's just my opinion.

I made a Hackintosh system a few days ago because I wanted to try MacOS and I am very impressed by it. And now if the M1 chip also seems to be good, as we'll see in a week or so, I actually consider buying an apple computer.
Dude Apple's ARM chips have been there for awhile now. They just needed a decent cooling solution so that they weren't being constantly throttled. I always said that it would be interesting to see what a high end iPhone SoC could do with a sufficient HSF. Now they have it. This was totally inevitable, it actually took a lot longer than I thought it would.

the problem with arm cpus ported to pcs/laptops is that the manufacturers will be able to lock the bootloader which makes installing any other os very hard and the OS maintainers have to make a version for each model and this will pretty much kill most linux distros

Dude, first 3 configs with M1 are the same - Air, Pro and Mini - different "package". The Mini (the cheapest) is going for $699 and in 2 years will proly cost $499 or even less. I think it will worth the shot for editors like you and such.
