이 곡이 처음 발표되고 한창 들었던 나날들의 공기랑 기온이랑 바람이랑 스쳐간 사람들 풍경이 순간 현재를 지나쳐 갔다. 그 때 심각하게 귓병을 앓기 시작했던 때라 매일이 너무 고통스럽고 저 멀리 아주 작은 진동, 아주 작은 소음조차 억울할 정도로 고막이 찟어질 듯이 너무 아프게 느껴지고 매일 고름이 흐르는데, 가족도 아무도 아무 것도 느끼지 않고 그런 소음은 들리지도 않는 것 같았고 아무리 찾아봐도 세상 그 누구도 이런 이상한 귓병을 앓는 사람이 없고 의사들조차 아무도 이 병이 뭔지, 원인이 뭔지 몰라서 슬펐는데 압감과 아픔은 가시질 않아 결국 양 쪽 고막에 천공을 내어 관을 삽입하여, 고막 안 쪽과 바깥쪽의 압감이 같을 수 있도록 수술을 했는데 세상 존재하지도 않는 병을 아무리 호소한 들, 모든 소리와 진동에 아파하는 내 자신이 꼭 환상통이나 정신병을 앓고 있는 것 같아 의심하고 또 의심하며 주위에 지금 이 소리가 실제로 들리는지, 혹여 내가 만들어 낸 소음은 아닌지 자주 확인했다.
나중에야 선천성인지 후천성인지 목에서 뇌로 향하는 혈관들 중 몇몇이 비대해져 얼굴 속에 커다란 혈관종을 두 개나 형성하고 있어, 내 고동소리에조차 심한 압감과 귀를 울리는 통증을 유발해왔다는 것을 알고 크게 안도했으나, 허무감과 원인을 안다한들 그리 전망이 있는 것도 아니라서 매일 3M 이어플러그를 끼고도 이 곡을 종종 들으면서 여러가지 생각을 하고는 했던 게 떠오른다. 가사 전체가 마치 내 귓병이나 환상통, 또는 환상통에의 의심 전반을 이해하는 것 같아서 들을 때마다 침잠된 마음으로 "나 뿐만이 아니다, 저마다 세상 아무도 앓지 않는 듯 해 억울한, 그리고 매우 이상한 환상병 같은 것을 느끼며 사는건지 모른다"며 딱히 나만이 아니라고 귀와 마음을 다스리던 먼 기억이 문득 생생하게 떠올랐다. 병은 사라지지 않았지만 기억은 마침 봄이었던 것을 기억하고 새벽이었던 나날을 기억하고 그 때로 현재를 돌이키게 하여 무척 놀랐다. 사람은 기억을 연료로 하여 살아가는 것이 맞고, 사람을 세우는 것들이 그리 거창한 것들만은 아니라는 것을 새삼 깨닫게 된다.
