  • Enjoy this clip of Al Bilali Soudan, from Timbuktu, Mali, performing music of the Tamasheq (or Tuareg) people at MIM! The performance took place at the Tuareg exhibit in the Middle East Gallery, where a tehardent (plucked lute) that belonged to family member Aboubacrine Yattara is on display.
This lute music of North Africa has been performed for half a millennium by Tuareg griots to celebrate the end of the harvest and the changing seasons, heroic warriors, and noble families. The tradition of playing the instrument is passed down in families. The group’s leader, Abellaw Yattara, learned from his father, and his son learned from him.
