Gabe, you seem very well versed in the use of diatomaceous earth as an insecticide. Congratulations! You are correct in that total body coverage of the animal with the powder will be the most effective way to kill insects on your pet. DEsect Pet is a contact product and the insect must come into contact with it in order for it to be effective. (The trade-off is it's non-toxic and additive free.) As DEsect Pet is a very good insect repellent as well, proper coverage around the OUTER ear only will repel the mites. And again, you're correct in that we DO NOT recommend placing the powder directly into the animals inner ear. Please see your vet for ear mites that have traveled to that point. Thank you for your interest!

I really hope that diatomaceous Earth is food grade because the cat will lick all that off it's coat. Always check it is food grade for an animal. I understand you shouldn't breathe it in either.

What did this have to do with killing ear mites?!

What about them breathing it in? Isn't that very bad for the cats lungs; as well as yours? As it is something that is going to stick to the lungs? Can you Please let me know? Does it kill ear mites, can one put safely around the ears enough to kill the mites? Thanks

So diatomaceous earth kills ear mites? Good to know. Many sources talk about how diatomaceous earth kills ticks, fleas, and internal parasites, but ear mites are something that is not really discussed much in my experience. I would also like to add that people want to make sure they thoroughly go over the entire body of the pet for maximum efficiency. That includes the underbelly, legs. paws, and tail. But I would also like to ask a question. Ear mites can be found within the ear. Does simply putting DE on the outside around the ear help to eliminate ear mites? I noticed that you did not put the DE directly into the ear, which I believe was good that you did not. While DE is safe to be on the body and ingested, the ears are places that I would not think the powder goes.

Did it work with the ear mites ? Tysm , it’s April 24, 2023

@@Deb_3 While it worked well for ticks and fleas, it did not work out for me with ear mites. I did put DE on the outside of the ear, but I was not comfortable with putting it inside the ear, since the person in this video did not put diatomaceous earth in the ears either. So a cat that had ear mites, while he was free of fleas and ticks, still had ear mites. Instead, I got some Arava pet ear wipes and Arava ear cleaner. That definitely helped his ears.

I highly suggest using gloves to rub because diatomaceous earth is very drying.

I dont think rubbing DE on the cats coat is going to kill the mites in their ears. It will on their coats but not their ears. Your title is slightly misleading. Also everyone be sure to use FOOD grade Diatamacious Earth.

Both my home cats bloody scabs on face neck and body.
1st DE did a dusting with the duster Total waste of time and pissed off my house cats.
2nd DE I took handfuls of DE and pushed into body neck and slowly in face protecting eye preventing any DE in eye area
Cats DE dusted my entire house!!! Which I then relized they were killing all insects in my house. Good Cats
3rd DE Again Hankfulls of DE from a large bowl and hair brushed into the fur. Very effective for 4-5 months but you I still see scratching after a few months. When the scratching creats scabs then I fully DE handfuls of DE with a brushing
This works not only on fur but on beding litter box inside and outside to rid insect all insect in a home.

This is terrible advice. Diatomaceous earth should not be applied to cats or animals. Most veterinarians advise against applying this product directly onto your cat due to possible lung damage… Given these protective measures, you certainly do not want to apply this powder directly to your cat’s coat and skin. Cats are consistent groomers and will lick the powder off, which can cause lung irritation and, worse, lung damage.
Moreover, the product is ineffective in killing fleas when applied directly to your cat’s coat. Not only can it cause lung irritation or lung damage, but it can also cause gastrointestinal upset in your kitty.
