That is a good call. I have 7 of these mats and all the same. I guess they think we're all draughtsmen or something. Brush Magic I did not know about so that's now on order and all my mats are getting the treatment... Nice one
I just use wax paper over top of my cutting mat, it makes it easier to clean up and I don’t worry about anything that spills. It helps to have a tool discount store nearby and wait for a 1/2 price sale on cutting mats.
The problem is, that we modellers aren't the primary market for cutting mats; that would be sewers and quilters and other fabric-based hobbies/occupations where you *do* regularly use the lines. That being said, though, there are some model/miniature companies that have their own mats, and yeah, you'd think they at least would have some without the lines. It's wild that there doesn't exist any without lines anywhere. You'd think there would be some, at the very least from modeling/miniature companies or something. I know that there are cutting mats in industrial settings that you can get custom sized for different workbenches, maybe that might be something you could look into? Dunno what the cost is like, but you could get something perfectly sized to your whole bench. I've no idea if they do them in green though, all the ones that I've had experience with in the past were gray.
forgot to say the Redgrass Games mat is a light grey and doesn't have any squares on it. It is aimed at wargamers, so there are various base sizes on it as well as paint mixing ratios. I think their biggest one is A2 though
Dont think I have ever used them lines either . I have started to use the foam cord card from Hobby craft just get the massive sheet and chop it in half and a new bit every time its dirty /cut up . Lasts a lot longer than you would think
I have to agree with you that after some time the mat looks like hell when the lines wear off or you spill paint on it, but seems like a lot of work to get where you want it ! Nice Job however 👍👍
Hi MOS, totally understand where you are coming from. Wish someone would do a plain black one, considering most kits are various shades of grey and smaller parts would show up against the black, prehaps another line of products for outlaw to do?
I sort of see your point if you're just assembling kits but, if scratch building (particularly card) they can be very helpful. Afterall it's a cutting mat not just a work mat.
I have one of those mats. At least, I think I do, under the other mats and the pile of parts I need to sort and put in the greeblie drawers. I really need to make a sci-fi ship to use up the 40 years' worth of spare parts...
I wouldn't mind a plain cutting matt with a small 25mm Airfix or Revell etc logo in the top corner of the matt if that would inspire a manufacturer to print some for the plastic kit hobby market. I do prefer a plain matt, just because soon or later you know it's going to get some hot product splashed over it.
Nice seeing you at Telford! I was the Canadian wearing the hat with pins all over it. I use a piece of conveyor belt material for my cutting mat, tough enough to survive a nuclear blast.
Agree to a certain point mate. Just wonder what you do with all the tissues/ wipes etc you have soaked in various cleaning fluids? Bin perhaps? And then landfill? Going green isn't necessarily green 😂
Mass produce for one style fits all, and I expect they will charge double for the sake of not going through the printer head. With a bit of elbow grease you have got the style you wanted.
Don't use a cutting mat at all. I have a piece of protecting floor board on my bench. It gets completely hammered. I just flip it over and go again. And when both sides are wasted I just put in a new one. Sure it looks relaxing, organized and peaceful to start with a fresh canvas, but the way I model (total chaos), it gets cluttered within 30 minutes anyway. Perhaps one day I will try a mat. The lines or a picture don't bother me. Well, unless it's some physedelic hypnotizing pattern perhaps.
The mats are for all hobbies not just plastic and glue scale modellers; the manufacturers won't make one specially for us, it's easier and cheaper just to make one and let people ignore what they don't need. I watch World of Wayne build part works and they often specify an exact length for a tube and the squares are ideal for that. I suppose if a model specifies an exact angle say for a wing dihedral the marks on the mat may come in handy. TBH if I don't need the markings I'd just ignore them. A0 is 47 "by 33" (roughly) so a bit deeper than you want MOS. A1 is 23" by 33". There's nothing the exact size you want.
Hey Moss, I'm the same bud. I once spilled a bottle of cellulose thinners on my new A2 mat, and the printed lines just flew off! I'm well-chuffed with the blank mat after a wipe-down, lol.
I thought I was alone in hating the yellow cabbage all over the mats, I looked for ages for plain mats and couldn't find one, even on the chinese sites.
Hi Moss, the thing with us humans who partake in this hobby, is we are all different and have different ways of working in the hobby, as for me, I would not bother with getting rid of the lines, but like I said we are all different, and we all have different needs also, cheers mate, best regards from a Kiwi living in Australia, Les
it does.. especially when im filming something and the camera auto focuses on the lines putting the model out of focus.. this way it doesnt interfere with my filming
I think lines on mats is a worldwide government conspiracy aided by the Illuminati to drive Moss bonkers 😂😂😂 Pretty sure it's working 😂😂😂 BTW MI6 is going to sneak in and replace your mat with a proper lined mat 😂😂 I find the lines helpful when cutting maskings. But the whole mat doesn't need lines just a small section in a corner would suffice.
Lol dude says he has a bunch of solvents and products that removes lines, so instead of just removing all lines.... wait what lmao average pre-americans
I use the lines extensively when making buildings for my model railway.
I do use the lines on my mat quite often for scratch building, can't really say that I use them for kit building though.
That is a good call. I have 7 of these mats and all the same. I guess they think we're all draughtsmen or something. Brush Magic I did not know about so that's now on order and all my mats are getting the treatment... Nice one

Great tip!
I actually use the backside of a 600x900 mat. It is a cheap one with no marketing on the back. It is a beautiful background for my build post photos.
yes i agree.. it helps the lens focus on the model not the lines
Naked green looks pretty good! Though I sometimes use the lines to align jigs etc...
yeah i can see that being useful
Each to their own, I've cleaned the lines off by mistake with thinners !
easily done my friend
glad to see you are coping with the OCD
@@celticwest I try lol
Each to their own, but I find the markings useful when making model buildings. Best wishes.
this was personal.. just my thoughts.. and asking a fair few few folks if they every use the lines, they say no haha
Cool as always. 👍
Thank you! Cheers!

but there a loads with tanks or spitfires on them.. so i guess its the market you employ these tactics on i guess matey
I just ignore them. It's safe cutting surface, table top doesn't get damaged or paint on it. Well most of the time no paint on the table.
forgot to say the Redgrass Games mat is a light grey and doesn't have any squares on it. It is aimed at wargamers, so there are various base sizes on it as well as paint mixing ratios. I think their biggest one is A2 though
Have you tried rhino cutting mats. I have one cut to size and is brilliant
Not yet! where can i buy them?
Dont think I have ever used them lines either . I have started to use the foam cord card from Hobby craft just get the massive sheet and chop it in half and a new bit every time its dirty /cut up . Lasts a lot longer than you would think
4 for a tenner is a bargain too lol
Yes mate as long as theres somewhere to keep them
I have to agree with you that after some time the mat looks like hell when the lines wear off or you spill paint on it, but seems like a lot of work to get where you want it ! Nice Job however 👍👍
Totally agree
Hi MOS, totally understand where you are coming from. Wish someone would do a plain black one, considering most kits are various shades of grey and smaller parts would show up against the black, prehaps another line of products for outlaw to do?
tempted
I use a black silicon mat. I have a small cutting mat that I bring in when needed.
nice..
I’m with you on this 100% but I prefer black 👍
black is a good colour but not for filming builds on
@@TheScaleModelShack black would certainly make it easy to see parts. Unless they're black. 🙈😁
I sort of see your point if you're just assembling kits but, if scratch building (particularly card) they can be very helpful.
Afterall it's a cutting mat not just a work mat.
Yeah.. good point! Thank you @stevejh6630 for leaving a comment. Please subscribe if you haven't as yet.. It really helps the channel grow.
Sorry mate I like the lines and graduations, I find them very helpful but I'm a retired engineer and we like measurements and standards.
Me too. Not retired yet though.
Fair enough matey.. i should have done a poll lol
I have one of those mats. At least, I think I do, under the other mats and the pile of parts I need to sort and put in the greeblie drawers. I really need to make a sci-fi ship to use up the 40 years' worth of spare parts...
weve all been there lol

That'll cost you 4 times as much just because it's hobby related.
My mat is from a quilting company.
i have suggested this... :)
Must admit, I would have to agree with you on this one. Yes to a plain cutting mat. Happy modelling and keep up the good work.
Same here. Just want a plain gray mat.
you have to clean them up i guess lol
Nice seeing you at Telford! I was the Canadian wearing the hat with pins all over it. I use a piece of conveyor belt material for my cutting mat, tough enough to survive a nuclear blast.
Ah great.. it was fab meeting you my friend
Handy, mine is buckled from being in car boot.
hot water will make it supple and will go down flat
Agree to a certain point mate. Just wonder what you do with all the tissues/ wipes etc you have soaked in various cleaning fluids? Bin perhaps? And then landfill? Going green isn't necessarily green 😂
it gets burnt down our way and made into electricity...
Well each to their own Moss actually I find the squares and guides quite relaxing 😎 I know quite bizarre
no issue here.. i have mechanical friends who use them... i just want a plain area to work on...
I’m with you on this Mos. It must cost the company money to add what is not required 👍
yeah.. maybe ill set a trend lol
Would prefer a silicon mat that size for spills and a small cutting mat for actual cutting.
And any colour other than green.
not a mat, but wouldn´t a small kitchen cutting board work?
Mass produce for one style fits all, and I expect they will charge double for the sake of not going through the printer head. With a bit of elbow grease you have got the style you wanted.
thats very true

i got a friend who does that.. goes to hobby craft and buys them 4 at a time

good shout
but the camera fixes the focus on them which doesnt help lol
Hey Moss, I'm the same bud. I once spilled a bottle of cellulose thinners on my new A2 mat, and the printed lines just flew off! I'm well-chuffed with the blank mat after a wipe-down, lol.
thats what happened to me with extra thin.. now i do it as a matter of course lol
I thought I was alone in hating the yellow cabbage all over the mats, I looked for ages for plain mats and couldn't find one, even on the chinese sites.
yep its not required lol Thank you @mrangry65 for leaving a comment. Please subscribe if you haven't as yet.. It really helps the channel grow.
Good to bump into you and have a laugh at IPMS. 👍
and to you too my friend

thats true :)
I think the cutting mats can be handy if you get the right one.
true
Acetone removes the lines easily.
brush magic has acetone qualities in it
You’ve got a line-tysm of some sort perhaps? 😆
most deffo lol
Jesus. A few lines wind you up. 😂 Lacquer thinners takes them straight off.
it does.. especially when im filming something and the camera auto focuses on the lines putting the model out of focus.. this way it doesnt interfere with my filming
I’m 61 mate, I’m infuriated by absolutely everything. 🤬
hahahah
Cutting Mat left intentionally Blank...
haha
meths might be a cheaper option than the Brush Magic
true but its good stuff
I think lines on mats is a worldwide government conspiracy aided by the Illuminati to drive Moss bonkers 😂😂😂
Pretty sure it's working 😂😂😂
BTW MI6 is going to sneak in and replace your mat with a proper lined mat 😂😂

its all a big conspiracy matey lol
Lol dude says he has a bunch of solvents and products that removes lines, so instead of just removing all lines.... wait what lmao average pre-americans
