“Beauty is something wonderful and strange that the artist fashions out of the chaos of the world in the torment of his soul. And when he has made it, it is not given to all to know it. To recognize it you must repeat the adventure of the artist. It is a melody that he sings to you, and to hear it again in your own heart you want knowledge and sensitiveness and imagination.”

Well worth a read even though the main character is quite unlikeable...haha.

Three movies of Maugham's stories have been made (and Maugham introduces each segment!): Quartet, Trio, and Encore. Well worth a look.

Wow, I was not aware of these movies. I'll look for them. Thanks!

Is this your first encounter with Maugham? If so, keep going. His short stories are really his best work.
I had a Maugham phase in high school when I was trying to figure out which writers I liked and those I didn't. And I liked him.

I've read 3 other novels by Maugham - Of Human Bondage, The Razor's Edge and The Painted Veil. I also first read Maugham in High School! I read Of Human Bondage for a book report and I loved it. But for some reason didn't read any of his other novels until years later (when I then reread Of Human Bondage). I bought his Short stories in two volumes a couple of years ago from a used book sale and plan on reading at least one of the volumes in the months to come.
