  • In this online discussion with Mike Popovich, we move beyond mythical and abstract descriptions of evil to expose the structure of evil and the development of its symbolism.

"The Gospel always wins. " Love Never Fails. You are loved perfectly. There is no guilt and no shame. He is not upset with you...then suddenly they (the sisters that were supposedly demon possesd) start to reflect their true selves and that starts to dissipate (manifestations from dwelling on the wrong things)".

Thank you for taking this time to share so bright and early! If we can open our eyes to see we would recognize deception but when we only see on the surface we get caught up in desires. May we know we have the mind of Christ.

I appreciate Andre's argument and have myself moved beyond the darkness of the evangelical/charismatic deliverance ministry model I was raised with and continued for the better part of six decades. I find that much of present day theology is conflicted, confusing and detracts from what Jesus came to show/tell us. However, I think Andre needs to address Paul's urgent emphasis in Eph 6 about the need for some sort of amour--one only wears amour if there is a real external enemy not some innate phenomenon--unless Paul's metaphor is a mistaken product of first century thinking. The Bible is a collection of ancient writing in languages that do not exist today and difficult to understand accurately. To me the issue of evil stemming from within us makes more sense and fits well with Roman 12:2 and 2 Cor 10:3-5. I am not sure how Eph 6 fits into the deconstruction of a devil.

Hi Evan, thanks for the question and your patience.
So I've highlighted (by bracketing] a few words in the passage to emphasize some thought:
Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of [truth] buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of [righteousness] in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the [readiness] that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of [faith], with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of [salvation] and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
Connecting this passage to another one of Paul's writings is illuminating.
The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5 We demolish [arguments] and every [pretension] that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive [every thought] to make it obedient to Christ. (2 Cor 10)
The enemy is identified as arguments, pretensions, and every thought that sets itself up against the knowledge of God. These are the spiritual principalities (or principles) that contradict the message of Christ. What does truth destroy? Lies. What does 'readiness' destroy? The hesitation of a fearful way of life.
I hope that is helpful although it is not comprehensive. I've spent much more time and effort on the theme in the book 'Desire Found Me'

Jesus you are our freedom. Holy Spirit thank you for guiding us away from fear and into the freedom to love shamelessly, unabashedly . Iḿ believing God will help me to live the life He wants me to live. Thank you for your words of encouragement.

We do create some things for sure by our wrong belief. There are also spiritual beings called demons and these can be seen in Jesus casting them out. We need the Holy Spirit to be able to see the difference between wrong beliefs and true demonic manifestations and we deal with both in a different way. Jesus cast them out with a word! We too under the influence of Holy Spirit can do the same thing.

From a nine year old little boy who said Jesus told him exactly what the ‘demonic’ was came THIS DEFINITION verbatim…
“Demons are CREATED BY HUMANS out of the ashes of war, the tears of those who are afraid, and the stuff that people want that doesn’t belong to them. Then they take on a life of their own & turn on you & torment you.”

This was so cool to learn from. What about accidents or evil things that happen to people? Would this be basically a manifestation of our distorted desires and false beliefs that cause these things to happen, or would you say that there is an alternative source? Thank you!

Good question: "What about accidents or evil things that happen to people?" Any answer will fall short of a good explanation, but I think mimetic theory adds some practical insight of possibility. When we consider mimetic dynamics within social, governmental, familial, financial, educational structures/systems etc., it is possible that memesis is at play in so-called accidents and evil things albeit not immediately perceptible because of complex inter-relatedness, entanglements and our lack of understanding.Take a look at systems theory, theory of relativity, observer effects, complexities of ecosystems, space-time phenomenon, etc. Stuff happens and It does not mean that something necessarily supernatural is at play but super profound, amazing and sometimes super cool. What is supernatural is Abba's love for us!

There is a great teaching on the satan in the book of Job by a fantastic TH-cam channel called (PERFECTED BY BLOOD. ) I had heard many teachings on Job but none of them rang true in my heart until I heard theirs. It's entitled WHO IS SATAN? (UNMASKING SATAN IN THE BOOK OF JOB. )
