    Love this Japanese adventure. There has to be gold there somewhere. They were mining it over a thousand years ago apparently. They've had two typhoons over there now. Were you caught in the first one? Those guys sure do get a decent belting on a regular basis, feel sorry for them. Another top vid Shane, please keep them coming :)

    ...my mother’s from northern Japan and her family own mountains: when the government paved a road going through, a construction worker found a fist size rock of gold(I believe the story is exaggerated lol) not sure what happened to that huge chunk of gold but we do have old gold mines I was t allowed to go near when I was a kid. Maybe next time I’m back in Japan I’ll bring my pan and see what I might find there. Btw, be careful panning in Japan cuz I believe it’s regulated by a set of laws called 河川法 Kasen-hou, depending of the classification of the specific stream, and they won’t give out any permits...

    Nice video! I'm glad you managed to find some gold! I have done some prospecting along Tamagawa as well.
    According to a geologist I used to know, apparently the gold comes from ore further up the mountains.
    However, as mentioned by others, please be careful with local mining laws. Especially in the area where Mitake is located, I do think any form of mineral extraction is actually illegal. Unforunately to my knowledge no good English translation of the laws exist...

      I did my research and saw it is legal to find gold here. However - the big knife I was using WAS illegal - but I didn't realize it until after I'd already left Japan.

    You should have kept working that original spot! I also think less people have been in that grassy crevice spot. Do you ever work dry arroyos? I just started messing around and have only found 2 tiny specs in dry arroyos. I have to fill buckets and bring home to pan since no water. It is hard work to do it that way for little results! There are abandon mines all over where I am in San Pedro Mountains. I think the original prospectors here in NM were chasing veins in bedrock.... no rivers. There is a creek but it is a trickle and muddy muck, no real gravel. I am convinced the only way to find anything substantial is how they mined. I would love to find a gold rich river like the 49ers!

    • @Klesh

    Quite a lot of gold yet to be extracted from Japan. There are some _very_ old mines there, but the country is surprisingly not as prospected as you would think.
    Some of Japan is geologically similar to the Western Cascades in Oregon (decent-ish for gold), some a little like the Oregon Coast Range (pretty barren, basalt pile), and some is like the Klamath Mountains (gold rich) -- with rifted continental exotic terranes (from Gondwana), and obducted oceanic upper-mantle (serpentinized peridotite) and crust.

    Another great video, Shane. At 1:28 I had to stop the vid to express my disappointment that you would not bring one of your trusty packs to carry your prospecting gear. That piece of luggage is..... oh Shane. 😰 you do know they thrown foreigners out of the country for lesser offenses!

      In the military they taught us to use whatever we had to get the mission done. I could've purchased a large backpack but didn't really make sense to waste that kind of money, so I adapted and accomplished the mission. Thanks for watching!

    Awesome. It really is cool to see you find gold in all the places you travel. Also You better find a police officer to give that gold to. We dont need you getting in trouble with the law over there :)

      Only items that previously belonged to someone needs to be turned over. The law is in place to help return items to those that have lost them.

    • @Klesh
      @Klesh  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure, and it's very difficult (especially a non-japanese reader/speaker) learning where to go looking for gold in Japan. If I could read japanese, I would start by doing some google searches on "where to find gold in japan". There's also a few recreational gold prospecting locations in japan that can be found online. Good luck!
