I would opt for unanimated dolls. My players would be more afraid of them if they are not animated. I can bring them to life if something goes south later on if I need too.
Interesting that they are more creeped out by the unanimated dolls. Either way, dolls are always one of my favorites to up the spook factor. Thanks for watching, cheers!
This gave me a GREAT idea for a similar, pseudo hag encounter I am writing. This might BECOME the encounter. I was wondering how I would trap them into her Manor (Playhouse). This is good and simple enough they might get it. I'm thinking, since the young Hag doesn't want them to leave, instead have this clue found in a secret passageway in the walls, left by a past victim trying to escape, and I might make the tea and maybe some cookies around the place be obviously evil, but give healing while they sap your strength score. Yes..... I think this is amazing.
My imagination for the dolls was that they could speak and possibly cast spells but not actually move. They might be cursed people or could have been awakened partially by magic. Either way they need the player characters help to leave the room. I'm influenced by a Pathfinder adventure where the characters are animated toys. The toys are animated through a combination of magic and the love of the children that played with them. So not necessarily evil toys but more Winnie-the-Pooh. So the dolls will help if the characters help them leave this cursed place.
