    @Sail Life, Hey Mads!
    Wouldn’t it be an idea to attach the nav station monitor to a swing out support?
    So in case you want to watch some tv, ore cooking program. 😉 You can swing that monitor around. And thus you can lower that wall dividing the Nav station to the Galley. And have the view from the saloon.

      I agree about a swinging mount... couple things to add... my tv mount will move in ruff seas so I have to tie down the tv before passage, no big deal, but if you can find a locking mount that would be better. You are building a "nav station" try to think of the placement of all the do dads that go with it. maybe lay them out on a sketch first.... chartplotter,ais,sat phone, battery meter, eprib, hand held vhf, vhf, etc...

    • @BobGubbins
      @BobGubbins 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      forgot to add viewing angle. chartplotter viewed off angle not good, but battery meter will be viewed when not seated at the station.

    • @svbarryduckworth628
      @svbarryduckworth628 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BobGubbins epirb should be out in the cockpit with a good view of the sky. It is doing self-checks periodically and the more crap it needs to see through to view the sky the harder it is on the batteries. Should it ever become necessary to depliy it should be out there and handy, and have all the battery left as conceivably possible.

    • @BobGubbins
      @BobGubbins 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@svbarryduckworth628 After reading your comment I reread my manual my eprib is mounted as per the manual.
      I have been on many boats and I don't recall ever seeing one mounted in the cockpit.
      self testing isn't automatic.
      I can only speak for my eprib, if others have questions be sure to read your manual.
      Step 1: Determine a suitable mounting location
      Locate the beacon in a readily accessible location that is protected from outside influences. The location selected must be sufficiently rigid to support the weight of the total installation.
      Hazards to avoid when selecting a mounting location:
      - Vibration - Exposure to the elements, especially sun - Possibility of impact from hatches, gear or personnel - Harmful vapors - Exhaust - Harsh chemicals (i.e. paint removers) - Locations that can be obscured by foreign articles on a temporary or permanent basis.
      4. Self-Testing the beacon
      The beacon may be self-tested as is warranted, once a month or up to a recommended maximum of 120 times in the 10year life of the battery. The self-test can be performed inside or outside a building or vessel.
      The self-test is initiated by pressing the self-test button for one (1) second until a brief green LED flashes and then releasing the button. Do not press the button for longer than 4 seconds or the extended GPS test will start.
      During self-test, a 406 MHz self-test message and 121.5 MHz signal are transmitted from the beacon. The self-test also checks battery capacity, beacon memory, GPS functionality and the circuit board. A long green LED flash and a long beep indicate a successful test. The strobe light will flash at the end of self-test and the self-test will be complete at that point.
      Note that if any of the individual tests fail during self-test, there will be a long red LED flash and four (4) beeps

    Welcome back, hope you had a great time in LA. I wonder if you could fabricated a third meter wide insulation blanket out of what ever scrap foam, down, old blanket etc to strap on the outside of the hull that would allow you to warm up just the area you need to tab. Use some heat lamps or forced hot air on the inside. Surface condensation in the bond area is the largest risk at any temp.

    Hi Mads,
    66cm for the shower sounds a little too much for me. I suggest you check if you can reduce it. 60cm sounds OK. This would give an extra 6 cm for the head and sink counter-top space.

    Could you not have the nav-station monitor mounted on a swing arm that can be folded back against the hull when not in use? This would eliminate the need for the backing panel and open up the space. Love your channel!

    • @SporadicallySane
      @SporadicallySane 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is definitely the solution, I was just about to write this comment. You could even have a dual monitor solution with a swing arm set up if you wanted to make it a video editing and computer workstation in addition to just being a nav station.

      Martin and Mads, remember that it’s right next to the galley. Food mess on one side and electronics on the other may not be too compatible. To make it feel more open though, one could add a thick glass panel to the top of the bulkhead. A lot of newer boats are doing that now. I did it in my Pearson 33-2 to help separate the galley from the settee. I’ll send you a photo if you like.

    Hey Mads, ther is an easier way to transfer curves to your plywood.
    I built two campervan using tis technique.
    You use a compass and start at the widest gap, then run it along you surface and you got yourself a perfect copy of the curve.
    Make sure to keep the compas perpendicular to the edge of you plywood, and vertical. Or horizontal if you are transfering a vertical curve.
    Does it make sense ? I can detail a bit more if needed.

  • @davejenkins6875
    @davejenkins6875 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Here's a tip...When it gets too cold to lay up glass...use halogen lights directed at items to provide a source of heat sufficient to warm areas needing tabbing etc. As a fellow Northerner with a short summer season I've used it outside even with snow on the ground. Since the lights only warm solid items and not the air there is a significant saving in time and energy in using this method. Note: A rule of thumb when deciding how far to place the lamp. Half the distance from item to be glass'd will quadruple the temperature of the item. I use a laser type IR thermometer to establish the material temperature before, during and after the glass is laid. Let me know if it works for you.

    I can't do this before I do that, but can't do that till I do this other thing. Been there! Give some consideration to the swing arm idea below, sounds like a more flexible plan and can share the nav desk and kitchen counter? I feel like a back seat driver, sorry.

  • @gordon6029
    @gordon6029 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would make sure and put a hand hold on the top corner by the vertical. This will help getting in and out of the nav station as well as an extra hand hold for the galley. Of course round it to match all your other glorious curves.

    Nice work Mads, the cabinets are really well built and will add to the structural integrity of the hull. I know you have a design layout you refer to, but l can also see it's a build as you go type of project and it's looking great.

  • @TdrSld
    @TdrSld 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Looking good, glad to see you made it back safely and not on fire (Cali joke). For the nav station I would take the ply wood all the way to the top of the lower ceiling, then put a radius'd 45 like you did for the seat and head. Doing this would let you have room for a shelve on the nav station side above the monitor, but not make the nav station a dark cave, it also ties the wall into the reset of the rooms look. If needed I could cad it up to show what I'm talking about.

  • @0sailing951
    @0sailing951 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Instead of filling in the nav station bulkhead, have you though of maybe just having the tabletop part protrude and having less bulkhead come out from the hull? That will open up the area without compromising the nav station space. Plus you could the. Put the monitor on an articulated arm, allowing you to fold it into the corner when not in use, and folding it completely out toward the settee to watch movies. With limited space it always good to find way of multi purposing your spaces. Just a thought!

    Leave that second piece of plywood bulkhead at the height is it. Mount your screen on top of it with a 180 degree swivel. Then it can swivel around towards the rest of the cabin and be used as an entertainment monitor as well. (added benefit is that the nav station is less cavelike)

    Make the bulkhead that separate the nav station from the galley shorter, only about 25mm above the desk top. Mount the monitor(s) on a swing arm at your desired height. If the swing arm pivots/rotates from the cabin ceiling, the monitor(s) can be swung around so that their back is against the hull and you can see them from the settee. Of course this means all controls need to be mounted low on that 25 mm back above the desk.

    You should consider a dual use space. I would consider using the toilet area as a nave space area. Somehow with good planning you can do it. The shower area is rather small, move the toilet out and put it under the nove space, and make that nave space enclosed.

    I wouldn't be dogmatic about having the monitor straight in line with the axis of the boat in front of your eyes. Looking a bit aside is no problem. This allows to lower the rest of the bulkhead below eye level: much less caved in feeling, much more in contact with the rest of the crew or whatever.

    • @ylemoine1
      @ylemoine1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Airgead I would drop the bulkhead completely, as I think others have suggested, and use an articulating arm for the monitor. This opens the space and eliminates the “cave” feeling and gives you a monitor facing flat against the hull while under sail that can be articulated toward the nav station, toward the companion way, or toward the saloon. It then maximizes the size of the nav station table storage.

  • @aserta
    @aserta 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Splurge and get a curved screen for the NAV station. The more curve you can get, the better. Heck, were it me, i'd get that paper type screen that you can bend whichever way you want and make a curved screen into the "wall". Maps generally don't need color.

    I’d suggest you stick to standard dimensions of a two or three burner gimballed Force 10 stove and then as you figure out your convection microwave options adapt into the available space. That seems to have worked for the vloggers mentioned already (Delos and Follow the Boat) and check our Sailing Uma who created a creative option as well.
    Love your vlog and plan as you go approach. Is it really ‘planning one step at a time’ or beyond the master layout is there more advanced planning then is evident from the weekly videos? Regardless, love the progress. Can actually anticipate launch in a year to 18 months. Fair winds.

    coming back in time.. Mads, why didn't you use the epoxy resin empty container for your rounded radius edge? then it truly would have become part of your boat :P

    Hello Mads, love your weekly videos. I was wondering didn't you have a gimbal stove in your galley? A electric one isn't much bigger. Can't you get the measurements from there?

    Sometimes, you crack me up. When you said, "BOOYAH TO YOUR MAMA", I just had to laugh. I was sure you were going to say, "BOOYAH TO YOUR FEMALE PARENTING UNIT", lol!
    Also, it appears as though Captain DumbDumb is due for a promotion!! How does "Major DumbDumb" grab ya? ;-)
    Welcome back. Or, Sorry you had to come back. Which ever is the case!! Hahaha Say hey to your lady friend from us!!

    How about curving your nav table seat on the Y axis? Would make working while the boat is heeled a lot more comfortable.

    Didn't you already buy a stove at some point to be used in the boat? I totally understand the desire to go for induction though. But don't you need massive batteries for it?

    Use an adjustable monitor mount to open up your nav station!

    Mads, I think you did extremely well considering the jet-lag. I don't trust myself with a can opener when I fly back from the states - let alone a yacht rebuild.

    Why not put your silicone heating blanket the outside of the hull to allow tabbing in cool weather?

    Monitor swivel maybe that can shift to the left (towards the haul) so you can have it on a 45° angle with a chart/notebook/ puzzle in front of you and you can look up to see Ave when she's in the galley etc. Then be able to pull up t out straight in front of you or even swivel facing the galley etc... Don't know just spitballing ideas. I think it would looks dm feel more open for sure.

    Hey Mads, I wonder about the new power management. Induktion for cooking? You don't plan to be at sea for more than one day? With shore power a great way to cook (well...most places have 6Amps for you =1450W) but in the harbour you don't need the moving option of the stove. Or is the generator running, when you cook? Alot of fuel for the bacon and neigbours at anker will love you. If Propan is not an option for Eva, I would concider ethanol (but in some places of the world customs don't get it, that you don't want to drink that stuff.) Kerosin.....not really. I'm sure, you will present a perfect answer for that! Love your videos and your way to work and learned some new things from you. Mange Tak

    Just was wondering instead of extending the nav bulk head out that far why not split counter top between the nav and the galley. This would make an L shape galley still have same space for nav. You could add the curves and have mlre of an open space feel.
