    Great format. Why? Because you get to meet real people ( Greek speaking, Greek heritage) and see and hear their reactions, sometimes quite hilarious 😂, in real Greek, comfortably paced and not the language of the Tourist. What I find extremely helpful is the Greek and the English translation together. You have no idea how labour intensive that is for me to achieve. This makes it so much more fun to learn.

    Dionysus was not a member of the pantheon. However after his religion was restored by Queen Thessaloniki he was one of the most worshipped gods.
    Dimitra (Demeter) was not the most boring of the gods at least for the ancients as because of her sadness for her daughter Persephone, the weather was changing and winter was coming. Also she was the one who killed the powerful Titan Athos (according to the myth in the place where the mountain Athos is in Greece) in the war between the Gods and the Titans.
    Εστία Hestia was greatly worshipped. There was not a single house in ancient Greece without an icon of the goddess of the family and housing.

    I've noticed, here and other sources, Zeus i usually said/spelled Διας but can also be Ζεύς. Can anyone explain the different version, and why the 'δ ' version is more common in modern Greek? Thank you.

    • @takater9426
      @takater9426 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Because in modern greek many objects in its nominative case are based to the type of accusative case of ancient greek. In ancient Greek is "Ο Ζευς" in nominative "τον Δια" in accusative case. So Zeus in modern greek is Διας. Also is very common to use in modern greek both the types of the modern and the ancient. E.g. The genitive in ancient is του Διός and in modern is του Δία, but we use both of the types in every day use. In some other cases the ancient type is used mostly in formal speech. There is no rule to do that just it happens and basically you have to be native to follow the "rule"

      @Πασιφάη The letter «ζ» was originally used for the double consonant «σδ»(sd/zd).
      So Zeus was actually once pronounced like "Zdeus".
      In modern Greek traces of that can also still be found. For example, in ancient Greek there was the ionic spelling «μαζός» (masdós), meaning "breast". The doric spelling was μασδός and in modern Greek we would say «μαστός» as in the attic Greek manner.

    • @EasyGreekVideos
      @EasyGreekVideos  2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      I wouldn't say they're more popular with non-natives than with natives. With Greeks, you sort of expect everyone to know everything about Greek mythology, whereas with non-natives it's mostly people who're really into history/mythology who have deep knowledge about it and know more than just the basics.
      I'd say, as a whole, a bigger percentage of Greeks are knowledgeable in Greek mythology than non-natives, but because there's the expectation that all Greeks should be experts in it (which just isn't true and would be impossible to be true), the false impression is given that there's not much interest in Greek mythology here.

    I have no idea what they were naming??? What is a Greek God? I have heard of Aphrodite but I thought that she was a very beautiful woman. And I thought Poseidon is what you call the planet Neptune in Greek. It would have been good if you could have explained a bit about what a Greek God is supposed to be. I am an Atheist so I don't believe in God, but are these "Gods" meant to be people who existed or imaginary fairies who had powers like "God"???

    • @EasyGreekVideos
      @EasyGreekVideos  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      For the Ancient Greeks, they did exist. They were immortals with supernatural powers, if you want to put it like that. They weren't purely immaterial as the monotheistic God is supposed to be. But they weren't people, either. For example, Aphrodite wasn't a very beautiful woman, she was the personification of beauty and love. Poseidon was the personification of water and the sea. So, if there was a storm, Poseidon must have been angry that day. Very roughly.

      Thank you for your reply but I still don't understand what anyone thinks of when they talk about a Greek God or maybe its like the Christian God... Noone really knows what they mean, everyone imagines something different... A man in the sky, a fairy, Jesus, a white cloud.... Maybe it's the same with the Greek Gods... But I just can't understand what the people in this video were naming???

      @@tychophotiou6962 It's mythology, people back then had different concepts about religion and the sacred than we do today!

      Atheist or not, I have a hard time believing you’ve never heard of the Greek gods. That’s like saying you don’t know what McDonald’s is🙄
