As a kid at a very strict school, if I asked a question on a subject matter wanting to know more, I was usually told off for not listening or understanding, made to feel dumb, but I just wanted to know more about the subject matter. As a student a teacher told me that 'It's the clever people that ask questions' and that is when the penny dropped for me. You ask clever questions, you take careful verbal shots. They who ask questions control the interaction and hold power. You know how to take away their ability to have power over you, I give you much credit for that. Peace and love, stay strong!!
You are totally right ......asking the right questions at the right time and in a calm way ....Those who are seeking power will often try and escalate certain matters .
What makes them think that people's vehicles are "private information"? Licence plates are the very definition of public information! You'rerequired by law to have them on display for all to see!
Finally, AB put the question I always scream at my phone when watching Auditors.. We the most surveilled country on the planet.. police have facial recognition, ANPR, CCTV, dashcams, bodycams etc.. However, when you pull out a camera they not in control of they go crazy.. it has nothing to do with security, it has everything to do with control… Are the police and government willing to switch off all the CCTV’s!? If not, we going to keep filming.. I guess Big Brother don’t like being watched…

Imo, thing that seperates AB from other auditors is the way he mirrors whatever attitude and behaviour is presented to him. When someone is polite and amicable, so is AB. When someone is rude or brash AB challenges the behaviour. There are people who don't have the confidence to challenge police behaviour in the moment, and they know this. So having people like AB not just bend to their orders, whilst still remaining respectful shows how it should be done.

I would be inclined to respond when asked about the purpose of your visit, to remark on the architectural interest of the building. Amazing how you manage to garner so much interest from the passing motorists. All of which are, no doubt, police in some capacity or other. The same, old line of questioning, of course. Something you're well versed in responding to, by now. I'd also like to think that the message is getting through in that being within the bounds of the law, means they should have no form of objection toward your presence/activity of recording from a public place. But there's still those who'll try to justify why they personally think you shouldn't be doing what you do which basically boils down to them not liking the idea. Not only does it unnerve them that a member of the public is, 'acting out of the ordinary', in that you're stood outside of a police station with a camera, but that there's nothing within the actual, objective law, (as it's written down), that they can do about it. So, the best they can do is try to dissuade you in some way from doing so. Except, you really don't have to, if you don't want to. And, there's nothing they can actually do about it, unless they want to risk transgressing the law, themselves, in the hope you're not knowledgeable enough to do something about it! 'People's private business?' Errr... it's in public. If people want to do private things, then surely a public place isn't where they would want to do it. As long as they're not being targeted or harangued, then there isn't a problem. Registration numbers of cars are viewable all of the time by people. In fact, that's why they're made visible on the front and rear of cars, so that they can be identified when necessary. If it were private information, then surely it would be somewhere a lot more discrete than on plates attached to the exterior of the vehicle! Just another poor excuse to try to stop you recording.
Always remember the #1 misconduct charge within the UK Police is unauthorised access to databases. The reason this sergeant asks about what you're doing with licence plates is because he knows full well that officers are always leaning on each other to access the database info for nefarious reasons. The practice is rife within their own ranks they assume the public can do the same.

Why do the police always say filming "private number plates"? They aren't, they are PUBLIC number plates, designed to be on PUBLIC display so members of the PUBLIC can see them! That's the whole point surely?
