You and Shug taught me a lot. I remember watching all your videos before picking a hammock. Started with a tie up Hennessey but now I have a Dutchware Chameleon. I love how easy it is to set up.
Great video and tips Shawn! Nice to hear your back home east. I am currently trucking in the south and parked at a truckstop in Cocoa, Florida. Wondering if I can hang my hammock on a couple of palm trees for fun.😊
It's funny that you mention the quandary of deciding what degree underquilt to get. I was listening to the Hammock Hangers Podcast and they had Danny from Superior Gear on. One thing that stuck with me was that he discussed attaching two 40° underquilts to get down into really low temps. I'm in the process of ordering a quilt set from Hang Tight and was discussing with Steve about me being on the hot and humid Gulf of America coast. I know I'm getting a 40° set, but I was back and forth about should I get another 40° UQ to stack or should I just get another 20° to use when its cold. This brilliant man suggested that he could make me a 40° UQ and add a 3/4 insert to attach when I needed it. I was like, "that's perfect!" Dont be afraid to discuss this with the business that you are buying your gear from. They have more knowledge and options than you could possibly think of. Also, keep in mind, you can buy cheaper gear from Amazon and such, but these American cottage vendors know what they are doing and can just about customize anything. Their prices are fairly comparable and have options for most budgets.
When I set up my hammock with the same straps you have I too use the carabiners It makes it a lot easier with less fuff and a faster hang And as you stated while using the carabiner you can keep the hammock strap flush with absolutely zero damage to the bark leave no trace Best thing about it Been watching your videos for the past 15 plus years Tell Sarah and Denali I said hello
Shawn, excellent lecture, as usual. Your commentary, with video demonstration is much appreciated. Been a ground guy up until now. Your lecture may change me to a tree dweller. I know you have spent serious money over the years and that you have slept in the Amok? That seemed an excellent option for this OLD man. Do you ever use it anymore, pros / cons? Thanks from an OLD veteran, retired in the foothills of the TN Smokies.
I remember those early hammock camping trips. It's the reason I got a Hennessy hammock myself. Ended up donating it to the local troop after getting married because it was such a great system.
I'll say Go!Hammock makes a great easy system. I want a chameleon maybe someday. But my hammock has treated me well. If you're camping though, definitely need a underquilt.
My very first hammock was a old chunk of fishing net with hemp rope back it the late 1970ish , next was the HH og birthing canal hammock , as a Canadian living on Vancouver Island still using HH , I have two double bottom one with bug net one without bug net for hot tenting , so at 61 years young I am still a hammock camper .
This is a good video for basics. I bought a cheap 11 foot hammock off Amazon for around $40-$50. So you certainly don't have to buy expensive cottage industry stuff, but you won't have all the bells and whistles either.
100%. I used Amazon hammock, underquilt and and a hike bike bage for 7 years with no problems and great trips. Upgraded a little when I could afford it. Not much upping for the $ difference.
Thanks for this, I’ve been wanting to switch to a hammock now that I’m getting older and I don’t want to keep crawling on my hands and knees for a tent.
That was the reason I switched. When I was younger I slept on the ground on a blanket with a tarp. Then I went to a tent for a short while (never liked those as I prefer to be in the open). Now I am much older I use a hammock. I can just sit down. No crawling around on the ground 😁
underquilt protectors can be over quilt protectors too. if you dbl up can make a cocoon windsock effect around you and quilts not over the ridgeline an snug af
29:50 I do it the opposite way - I disconnect the side of hammock with the stuff sack and start shoveling the hammock in the sack advancing to the other end. This way I don't need to lay the hammock over my shoulder so that it won't drape and touch the ground.
Out of curiosity, why not simply put the tarp OVER the continuous rigdeline and center it that way? Unless I'm missing something, it seems it would be even easier and require less hardware to set it up this way?
In regards to your tarp made from Cuban fibre/Dyneema. For me the biggest disadvantage is the noise. If there is even a slight breeze those things make noise. A bit like a newspaper blowing in the wind. Very annoying.
Thanks for the post and info currently watching. Long time fan going on 10 years
That's awesome, glad you're still hanging around!

I don't hammock camp, but I LOVE the information you provide and the way you convey it to us.
Thank you. I love hammock camping. Never thought of stacking under- quilts for twice as warm - sort a

Great video! Learned a lot!
Great information 👍 Thanks for sharing 🎯
Thanks Shawn for giving us these tips and showing the set up very helpful.
Glad to see ya back at it bro

Will do - they're doing well :) Thank you!
TH-cam almost killed this video for me. Counted 10 ads through the video.
Good info tho. I want that tarp!

Yup, lot's of fond memories getting started with the Hennessy system. I never was very good at tying those tree strap knots, though 😅
@@sintax77 I'm still amazed that my knots never fell out - or turned into an impossible mess.
@@sintax77 I have never used the suggested lashing method , I use a carabiner and the Munter hitch never have had a problem .
I taped a little hook on my hiking pole to push straps up the trunk.
Thanks Shawn! 👊🏻👍🏻 Always great to hear from you my friend, stay safe and take care 🙏🏻 God Bless
Appreciate you always!

I want a hammock for my bedroom! Love your videos! Thank you 🙏
I have a bum shoulder and for the last five years I sleep in my basement in my hammock , and still camp in a hammock too .

Right on - as long as you're getting out there and having a good time, that's all that matters!

I had an open bottom bugnet, I woke up to 5 spiders inside it one morning. I ordered a dream hammock the next day.
Sintax and viewers, what are your thoughts on DD hammocks? I own a tarp of theirs for car camping needs. Seems quality
Me too, buys everything Dutchware comes up with.

Instead of a underquilt can i use a folding mat?
Good coverage for all levels. Hammock setups saved my love for the outdoors. Four Seasons!!!!

Is this a single or double hammock?

the tarp can get chafed when it gets windy or heavy rain if it is over top of the continuous ridge line , especially a expensive tarp .
@dmc2087 A good point indeed!
an how do you do the knotty mod to a 11st whirlwind ...
Try your hammock system in a cargo Van.
In regards to your tarp made from Cuban fibre/Dyneema. For me the biggest disadvantage is the noise. If there is even a slight breeze those things make noise. A bit like a newspaper blowing in the wind. Very annoying.
Hammocks are sooo comfortable, but it does take up alot of space in a backpack.
You didn't talk about dripping!
do you mean drip lines ?
The dutchware hardware provides that.
Professional hammock campers?
what makes a hammock Asym.. rather than symmetrical..
Where's my camper tour? Are you just a tease lol
No cheeseburger?
I know! It’s cheeseburger time!
You have to earn it with hiking. Just talking about gear isn't enough.
Boring. Why should I listen to an old boomer telling me how to do things 🙄
Scroll on then.
If you like camping and hammocks then you should be happy to listen. If you don't, what are you doing on this channel?

Hey, now. He's not a boomer, I'm a boomer, and I love learning from a youngster ;
