If your job lets you travel, then go for it. But if you’re trying to find a decent job, you might as well forget about it. Our city has lost over half of its population in the past 60 years. Many people are leaving here every year, especially in the past year. Half of the houses in my neighborhood are either vacant or are let to rot/rotting away. It’s extremely sad. Downtown has improved and a few other neighbors are nice, but the rest of the city is a slum. Same goes with Many other cities around Charleston. Which has been going through a downward spiral for years as well. But since your job is online, you’ll be ok!

Avoid the city directly. Go for some acreage with a little house. It'll be cheaper and less likely you'll encounter a junkie regularly.

Charleston and the Kanawha Valley has been shrinking since the early 80’s. I had to leave there in 1983 because of the lack of jobs. It was a great area to grow up in during the 60’ and 70’s loved being a kid there. Breaks my heart to see how this area is deteriorating.

Born and raised in Charleston. My advice to you is not do it. Even tho it’s dirt cheap there, the jobs that they do have here are dead end jobs, and a deteriorating economy. And not just that, they have a serious opioid and meth crisis in the city and state. You can literally catch at least a bit of people on the streets that are strung out on drugs. And that’s bad for a small town.

Our city has lost over half of its population in the past 60 years. In just my block, there is 1 vacant home for sale and 3 abandoned homes that are boarded up. People are leaving here in droves, especially during the pandemic. It’s been going through a downward spiral, like many other West Virginia towns and cities. I mean if you want to live In a declining areas, you might as well put upstate New York and Illinois on the list as well. But only difference is that property taxes are somewhat lower than those two states. But all the three states are business unfriendly, despite West Virginia being slightly more business friendly, but not much.

Despite having a WFH job, I want to make sure that my neighbors have good jobs, don't use drugs, and that the nextdoor homes aren't junkyards, abandoned, or otherwise in poor shape. Charleston doesn't tick any of these boxes. Code enforcement needs to do its job. Roads are in bad shape. There are no good jobs other than remote. San Francisco in 2022 is an expensive dump, but it's still a lot better than Charleston. There is a very good reason why housing is much cheaper than the national average here.

Charleston doesn’t offer anything. Once the workday ends anyone working downtown leave. Charleston’s downtown is dirty, dingy, dangerous and full of drugs and violence. Homes in the area are in terrible shape and those affordable homes are in some of the most undesirable areas of the state. It’s one of the worst areas in the country to live and work and that includes Putnam and Huntington. It’s just a terrible area that is not nice and doesn’t offer the type of conditions and living people are looking for including young couples or singles. Charleston has one of the worst nightlife’s and the only shows are either for babies or classic rock and country music fans. There is no variety to tap into and no place to hold anything. The urban-like downtown goes straight to interstate on all sides and the river and lack of bridges for public crossing hurt access to and from to make things accessible. Charleston is literally thrown free state money and the rest of the state that is growing watches as they burn it in a fire pit because it does nothing for the area. Shopping out corridor G and that build out has made Charleston so unshoppable because of how hard and how far out the area is. Its no wonder people still drive to Huntington and now Putnam County to do basic shopping. It’s one of the most depressing and unfriendly places to live hands down.
