Rumi's "Wedding Night" was December 17, 1273, commemorating the departure for eternal life-the ultimate meeting he had longed for his entire life.
Afâkì describes Rumi's funeral:
"After they had brought the corpse on a shaft, the totality of the people, rich and poor alike, uncovered their heads. Women, men, and children, everyone was there. There was an uproar so loud that it could have been the day of the great Resurrection. Everyone was crying, and most of the men were walking and wailing, tearing their robes, their bodies bare. Members of all communities and cultures were present: Christians, Jews, Greeks, Arabs, Turks, etc. They walked in front, each holding high their Holy Book. Each was reading the Psalms, the Pentateuch, or the Gospels, according to their faith. The hurling and lamenting were so great that the Moslems could not have held them back with canes or swords. The thunderous tumult was soon heard by the sultan and his minister Pervané who sent for the leaders of these denominations and asked them why they were so affected when the one they were mourning was the imam of the Moslems. They answered: 'When we saw him, we understood the real nature of Christ, of Moses, and all the prophets. We have found, in him, the perfect conduct described in our Books as being the conduct of the ideal prophets. Just as you, Moslems claim that Mawlana was the Mohammad of our time, so we think that he is the Moses and the Jesus of our time, and just as you are his faithful friends, so are we, and a thousand times more, his servants and disciples. Had he not said, '72 sects will hear from us, their own mystery. We are like the flute, which, with a single mode, is tuned to 200 religions.'
Our Master is the sun of the truths, which has shone on all mortals and given them his favors. Everyone loves the sun, which lights everyone's house.'
___________
Our true death is our wedding-giving rise to eternal life and union with the One.
What is its secret? "He is God the One."
The Pure Light of Awareness is dimmed and dispersed through the apertures of our senses.
When the apertures are shut, the dispersed multiplicity vanishes.
The multiplicity observed in the cluster of grapes
is no longer perceived in the unified juice that is squeezed from the grapes.
Anyone alive through the Light of God,
considers the death of their carnal soul as a blessing.
Regarding them, say neither bad nor good,
For they have transcended the paradigm of right and wrong.
Fix the gaze of your awareness on the Truth and refrain from speaking of that which you do not know,
so that God may grant you pure vision.
This Pure Light of Awareness is the essence of true seeing;
In its presence, no hidden mystery goes unrecognized.
Since such attention is turned toward the Light of God,
What can remain hidden in the presence of this effulgent Light?
Although all lights emanate from the Divine Light,
do not regard all lights as eternal and self-sufficient.
The Light of God is the only eternal Light there is;
The ephemeral light is an attribute of the body and mind.
Distorted vision creates nothing but misery and suffering;
lest God bestows Light upon our eyes.
Then, like Abraham, our cloudy vision transforms into Light.
The short-sightedness of our limited vision transforms into Wisdom.
Oh God, who gives the grace of true vision,
The bird of my vision desires to fly toward You and behold You.
Like an astronomer, this Pure Light of Awareness looks beyond the limited mind
and sees You everywhere it turns in this infinite and eternal Existence.
Oh God, either give us true vision by gifting us an Encounter with You,
or do not reject us solely on our flaws.
Help us in keeping the vision of our Awareness ever anew.
Protect us from being attracted to and identifying with deceiving forms.
When Your Grace awakens our vision, our worldly vision goes into slumber.
Such slumber is Perfection and Stability.
We can't awaken by the dream state of our unawakened mind,
So, awaken us from this dream against our minds' jealousy and gravitational pull.
Otherwise, we'll suffer aimlessly through our minds' struggles,
searching for the Fire of Your Love even to the grave.
