Your conversation about small businesses vs big box stores is very fair. It's actually why I try my hardest to get a lot of my sewing and craft supplies secondhand. When I can, I will shop small, especially if it's a brand that is designing and creating their own products (like you). Something like a small business quilting store is likely ordering from the same (or similar) large wholesalers as a big box store, but setting their MSRP very high. I get it. You want to be able to cover your costs, pay yourself, pay your employees. Most likely they're not getting big tax breaks like bigger companies could. At the same time, I know I can find what I'm looking for secondhand. It's cheaper than both options and definitely more sustainable. The caveat being it's time consuming sourcing materials that way. I like conversations like this. Keep it up! Anyway - I actually tagged you in my most recent video! It's a Sewing Tag Q&A. I wrote a list of questions about sewing, answered them in a video, and tagged a few of my favorite small business sewing content creators! Kinda like "tag, you're it" to answer the questions in a video lol. I hope this is something you're into doing! I know I'd love to hear your answers and get to know you a bit more.
i had no idea you could buy fabric from thrift stores so I’ll be checking out my local ones soon! and thank you so much for tagging me, i’ll be filming that very soon (and also binging your videos 😊)
Yes, I had fun so I was listening to all of the things that you were saying that you buy for supplies. The only thing I did not hear is what or if you charge for your time if you do not charge for your time it takes you to make a wrap or any of your products you can charge yourself minimum wage or whatever you wanna charge for your time , yes, you are one person and you are doing everything and if you were working at a job as you know because you do you get paid hourly , and I totally agree with you about the small yarn shops Some of the yarn places I have been in before was not so nice but some of them are and I wish I could support those but yet they are a little too expensive for my business
i basically charge 3x the cost of materials and then add a few dollars for shipping. one of my coworkers told me my prices are too low so i’ll be rethinking pricing soon lol!
For me (as a knitter) I can’t afford to buy sweater quantity of yarn from my fave small yarn shops/hand dyers but i do try to think of what I can do. What I can do is afford designs/patterns made by small designers as well as 1 hank of yarn for socks from my fav hand dyers ❤
