'I Had to Act': Marine Veteran Charged in NYC Chokehold Death Tells All

  • The marine veteran accused of killing a homeless man in New York City speaks out after nationwide criticism - and praise - for a deadly chokehold that made headlines in May 2023. Daniel Penny, the 24-year-old vet, restrained 30-year-old Jordan Neely after Neely made threats to several people, including women and children, while riding the subway. “I was praying police would come,” he said in an interview Sunday. “I couldn’t just sit still.” Neely died as a result of the restraint. A medical examiner ruled Neely's death a homicide determining the cause of death as "compression of neck." Penny was charged with manslaughter.

Neely’s threats were very much sincere. He had been arrested over 40 times for multiple offenses several of them violent. For example: assault of an old woman, attempted kidnapping of a child, and a few other assaults.
None of this is me trying bash the guy. It’s sad that a man died. I’m just trying to clarify that he had a violent history and was a threat to the people on that train.
Had the NYC justice system actually done the right thing and either put him in prison or institutionalized him, he might have been alive right now.
Don’t blame the citizen for standing up and protecting women and children. Blame people like Alvin Bragg who use the judicial system to go after regular people and political opponents instead of locking up actual criminals.

Considering Penny would have no way of knowing that history it has no bearing on his decision to do what he did in that moment. Penny also could have utilized a different method of restraint. He chose a hold that could easily result in death, and as such, used deadly force against an unarmed person causing a disturbance.
You talk about locking up "actual criminals", and so if Penny is found guilty, I guess he becomes one of these "actual criminals" so what would you want the punishment (or lack of) be?

    • @samkornrumph8545
      @samkornrumph8545 ปีที่แล้ว +31

@@adoredpariah Fair point. I was trying to emphasize that Neely was a career criminal that was also mentally unstable. The Legacy Media is not discussing that fact. That is why I posted it. Penny probably didn't know that Neely was a criminal. He and at least 2 other people saw a man threatening women and children and saying he wasn't afraid of the consequences. People with nothing to lose (especially ones who clearly are mentally deranged) are unpredictable. Penny and the others took what they believed was reasonable action to subdue a perceived threat. Many of the witnesses were thanking Penny for protecting them from a crazy homeless man.
What method of restraint would you have used? I'm not an expert in hand to hand combat and I assume you aren't either. Real life is messy and just about any use of force has the potential to be deadly. There are so many things that can go wrong in situations like this that cannot be accounted for. I'm willing to give Penny the benefit of the doubt because of the fact that Neely had a long history of violence and was being belligerent.
If can be proved beyond a reasonable doubt that Penny acted either reckless or maliciously then he should receive the proper punishment. He's being charged for manslaughter which at worst could mean he acted out of blind rage or he intended to cause serious injury Neely and ended up killing him by mistake. From what I can tell neither is the case, but we don't have all the facts yet. We'll see what happens in the trial.

@@adoredpariah you missed the point completely. No one is saying Penny knew about his prior arrests but OP is trying to point out Neely's violent character. You can't blame someone for finally delivering the treatment a violent person deserves.

Mental health is such a problem and at the metro is where you’ll face that. People in a funk will kill you because they are literally out of their minds. I had a few scary incidents and I know how scary it is from stop to stop when someone is going off on you for no reason. Mr. Whatever your name is, I stand by you. I lived in New York for 57 years of my life. I know those feelings very well; when someone threatening gets on the train. I took that same F train daily and I was on that route many many times over the years. That was the main train I took to work everyday for decades. I can't tell you how many intimidating loud dangerous people have en countered on the train. This guy is a hero. I don't care what the situation is for the person he restrained . When someone comes in in a threatening matter you don't have time to think you only have time to react. Most people don't help. Most people let violence occur and they don't come to your aid. This guy should be cloned.
When something like that happens you either become an instant victim, or you have to take a risk and try to mitigate the situation. This hero did not administer a beating he restrained threatening individual. He should be commended and appreciated and rewarded.

Doesn't matter how you look at it, since from a logical point of view, excessive force was used. You cant even shoot and kill a man for punching you in the face since by law thats considered as excessive force, so what makes you think this scenario deserved to end with excessive force and murder?? If the man was in the middle of assaulting and harming people, then by all means i wouldn't have cared if the Marine choked him out till he died, but he wasn't.

Kneeley got karma. This man wasn't an old woman that you attacked and you choked out. I hope it hurt until the last breath and the 65 yr old womans image was on your mind as you faded into the gates of Satan.

So based on words you walk up behind a guy and choked him to death...a mentally ill guy. There's no footage, we are just to believe you? The guy was ill and harmed no one, he yelled and you a trained killer choked strangled him.

I’m glad he stepped up but why hold him until he dies? Even after he was told from some guy that he was going to kill him, he didn’t let go.

His military training will be his downfall... He was taught this chokehold and told how long it will take to subdued or killed a man and that's every branch of the military.

You didn’t have to kill him! You say he was taller than you but he was obviously hungry and malnourished. You belong behind bars!!

"taller" don't mean anything when u been starving an dehydrated and he took full advantage of that. Instead of actually helping the man. This would of never happened if they offered aid instead of violence..

I hope there are organized protest's for this man!!! I am sick and tired of criminals being presented as the victim and the families coming out of the woodwork to collect a check ...evil is running rapid in the world we need to come together in the defense of goodness...

This is one of the unsung heroes he did a great thing more people would step in and get these people under control and throw them in a padded room with bars and leave them there wouldn't have this problem I never want to hear that let's get Justice for their family BS where was a family- during all the other times you should have had him under control that's right didn't want nothing to do with it

Why didn't he just restrain him? Why murder him?? Hold his arms, pin him down. Choking him that long was too much.

Homeless guy probably wanted a place to sleep like a prison cell. Went the wrong way about it. Whats even sadder is he probably got that idea from another homeless person who wanted him gone.
