***IMPORTANT: Don’t forget the upper shock mounts when you install the new rear shocks. I forgot to mention this in the video. The rubber mounts are not included with the new shocks, so you will need to transfer your old ones over***
Justin Buice - hi justin. Just installed my shocks similar to yours on my e90 xdrive. Do the struts need to protrude the lower portion of the strut clamps? My install seemed not to allow me to do so. Struts sit flushed into the clamp but not protruding. Would appreciate your advice. Thanks!
Need to replace shocks and springs , trying to get the Exact same thing Only different is my tires and rims are 17 other bmw would it rub or be lower. Pluse can u send me the info site to buy all parts thanks
Justin Buice wanted to add you did this in the cold. No small feat. I whine when it’s 60F outside and working on the car. May I ask where you’re located? I’m in Torrance CA. Great video quality!
This video is very cleanly made and I appreciate the attention to detail while also having a short total time. This is looks a like a massive upgrade and I just bought Koni Yellows to replace on my e90 328i from 2011. Cheers man hope these are still working well!
Good upgrade. I did the same shocks earlier this year on my 330i. I just wish I had done it before 130k miles. The new B8’s raised my car up which made me get H&R sport springs to lower it again. My next bmw will just get coilovers.
I have a 2006 325xi. I replaced the whole strut assembly today on front left and right. I bought all new parts and had a shop put the assembly together so I could avoid any slips with a spring compressor. In your video, it appears that you do not detach the inner toe rod from the steering knuckle and apparently you don’t remove the smaller control arm from the end where the bushing is. No matter what I did, the strut would not come out of the steering knuckle without detaching that tie rod and the control arm. I also saw other videos where they had to do what I did. I am curious of the exact model you worked on.
Good job brother, and as much as FCP got you the parts, I almost judged you for not mentioning your dad. Money can't compare to genuine pops and his help. Glad to see he wasn't forgotten in the comments. Keep it up!
Justin Buice 78,000? I want too see your bmw make it too 250k befor we talk about how reliable the 3 series is, seen a guy selling the same bmw you have for 1500$ has 123,000 miles and the transmission went out its a 3 series 2006, always wanted a bmw but seen soo many of them at the junk yard just makes you think twice befor buying it.
Justin Buice I know winter makes it harder to work on the vehicles, I have to replace an oil pan gasket, and valve cover gasket, plus do a coolant flush, smh it's gonna be torture for me lol am plugging up my heater from Walmart.
Indeed, I know from experience also, changing suspension components on the E92 is not easy or fast, especially in the back a lot of trimm has to come off....almost all of it if I think about it :) Also you should note the rubber/plastic protection can be replaced independently of the suspension, every time it cracks or breaks, so the dust and water don't get into the shock.
This video left out a lot of details, hopefully your next vid will be more detailed, I just installed bilstein b6 on my 2011 Bmw 328i and it was a little confusing on which parts of the upper mounts from the old shocks get used on the new bilsteins
Same here, just bought a 2006 330i, took the front wheels off for the first time. Looked at the shocks and its the oem bmw shocks with a date code from 2006. Im amazed that it still handles great. The rears seem a bit bouncy tho on bumps but still impressed they lasted this long. Will be replacing soon for sure, but first, changing out all the fluids.
great work doing the job on your own! Im sure that transformed your car. I have a 2011 335 with 40K miles and want to get bisteins on as the shocks feel tired already.
Preshaan Briglall yeah rears are the easiest thing in the world to do since the spring is separate. The fronts are a royal pain though. The lower tube part of the shock in the front seized into the knuckle on my car when I got h&r springs.I ended up compressing the springs with the shock on the car.Just pulled out of the wheel well with a blanket between the shock/strut and fender lol.
On the backside of the steering knucle where the bottom of the strut clamps in, theres a small slit. Bmw makes a tool for prying the clamp open which makes it easier to take out. You can also wedge a flathead screwdriver in there if you dont have the tool
Man, that's no job for winter :) I also did a lowering last summer. First time for me and spent even 10+ hours with no help. The front is way more difficult than the rear. I can imagine this will improvement the ride quality seeing those busted old ones ;)
Can you put sport springs on the B6 kit, Why or why not? Would sport springs be bad for B6 or is it still manageable being that they are not as short as lowering springs? it's my first time doing this and want to be confident with the setup.
Sick videos bro. I got a question I have an issue with my 2006 325i right now Instead of getting 20-21 mpg I'm getting about 12-13 mpg any idea why it might be burning gas that fast?
If you have the check engine light on and have trouble codes, it can be bad o2 sensors on the exhaust pipes. If the sensors for the catalitic converter is bad the engine cant calibrate the right amount of fuel, so this can happen. Its like a fail safe for the engine to dump extra fuel for protection. Usually you can smell the crude gas smell at the tailpipe of the exhaust. This happened to my toyota truck once I changed the o2 sensors it was like new. The engine reprograms itself.
Hey so I have a big question regarding fitment: right now I have lowering springs on the stock shocks and struts and I rub a little too much on big bumps and awkward hills. Do the upgraded shocks and struts help this enough to where I should buy new shocks and struts to match the lowering springs or should I save up for coilovers?? Please help.
Hi @justin buice, you’re correct; the video was great but a couple nit-picky things. I am going to tackle the exact same tasks next week. You started out the video with some great tips (get all your tools ready and there are a lot of them). Definitely mention replace the upper and lower shock mounts (as appropriate) especially when you are replacing old stock ones. Try not using your torque wrench unless you’re measuring torque on fasteners. Also make sure you mention the safety implications of spring compression and using a safety cable or retainer to restrain the spring if it escapes the compressed state. Overall, a well made video. Look forward to your next effort!
Were you able to get the strut out without loosening/disconnecting the tie rods or control arms? I have xdrive as well, it seems like the RWD DIYs always loosen the control arms. I would rather not if possible lol.
Great video Justin, looking to do the same but i was wondering if you have part numbers for the shock/struts you used with the lowering springs . Thanks
The shocks hes using are the Bilstein B8 . I dont have the part #s but can tell you these shocks you use only if you have the factory bmw sport suspension or are using aftermarket lowering springs like Justin has on his car. If you dont have the factory sport suspension or dont have your car lowered you need to use the Bilstein B6 shocks that are a little longer. B8 and B6 are the same bilstein shock,The difference is the B8 is shorter than the B6. I must warn you the yellow bilstein shocks are pretty firm. If you like your car to ride softer and more comftable then you need the Bilstein B4 line of shocks. The B4 is an oem quality replacement that is about 5-10% more stiffer that the stock shock. Also be carefull, the B4 shocks come for the standard bmw suspension and for the sport suspension, so you need to be aware because there are different part #s depending what you need. Hope this helps you.
Manuel if you go to tire rack.com put your cars info and weather its a sport suspension or not and then go to the suspension part. There you can see the part numbers for the shocks. The yellow b6 and b8 bilsteins are more expensinve and more sporty, meaning stiffer in the ride quality. The b4 are softer like oem.
Damn got the Bilsteins', that is one of my goals for my e92 335i. Grats on the upgrade, I wish you would have given feedback on what you thought of the ride before and after.
I have an ‘11 335i M Sport E90, assuming this would apply the same way and just to be sure this all doable without an air gun? I don’t have one and either way it’s not accessible to use at my apartment complex 😭
How far in did the struts go into the knuckle? Did you line it up with the taper on the struts? mine sits maybe an inch before hitting the taper...not sure if it's suppose to go all the way in or not

The first one of the rear and front took me ages but the other sides less than half the time so i'm confident i could do it quicker next time now i've got more experience. Hey Justin nice video. I wanted ask u a question, what do u think about bmw 320i e90 or e92? Maybe will be better 325i which have more hp mmm i dont know to do... Greetings from Spain.
123456bmx I would like a gasoline engine because if I have a fault they are usually cheaper, I also love the sound compared to the agricultural sound of diesel.
Greetings, I have a 2007, BMW 525XI, and need to change my shocks and struts and maybe rubber mounts. What would do you suggest to be the best name brand. Also, I have a problem with work being done to me car for example I replaces 4 new tires, changed my oil, and the lights continue to come on. Question to you-shouldn't my seniors be change as well while or after the work was done.
Vivian, I would recomend the Bilstein B4 shocks to you as a good oem replacement shock and strut for your car. I dont understand your comment to well but I think your asking about the air pressure sensors that go on the wheels when you changed the tires, and the light has come on the dash of your car. If this is the case the tire pressure sensors go bad after several years. In order for the light on the dash to go away you have to buy the 4 new air pressure sensors and make sure they are pre programed to your specific car so they work properly. I bought mine on ebay and made sure they came pre programed to work with my car. Then after you install the 4 sensors, one for each wheel inside your tires you have to reset the memory for the tire pressure momitoring system(tpms) on the dash of the car. Once the 4 new sensors are installed and the memory on the dash is reset after you drive a couple of miles the car will recognise the new sensors and the light on the dash for the tire sensors will go away. I hope this is what your question was and I could help you. God bless.
South Africa actually. I believe all "on the lot" cars were assembled in South Africa while special order or initially deliveries were assembled in Germany.
Upgrading the shocks and struts made it feel like a different car completely. Huge improvement. When I just had the lowering springs, the ride was terrible. I regret not doing the shocks and struts at the same time I did the springs.
Hi thanks - just ordered B12 for my e92 325i. Will follow your guide. What do you think of the driving now? Also, how many miles does the car have, and did you assess the control arms when you were doing the work?
Hey Justin! Love your content! Could I trouble you maybe with the specs of your rims in the video, like model name/number and so on. Would appreciate it a lot. Message me when you read this. thanx
Why the hell on fcpeurope i cannot find my car? Its a 2012 bmw 320d e91 😠😠. Edit Jesus Christ, of course they offer life garantie, their parts on fcpeurope are 200% More expensive than any other site, more expensive than the manufacturer 😱😱😱😱 daaamnn.

Big thanks to my dad for helping me out in the cold!
Justin Buice I can tell your car sits out in the cold. A lot of rust on it. Do you wash the car every week?
Yeah I wash every week but there's nothing I can do about the salt they use on the roads :/
Justin Buice oh ok. does the suspension feel the same as when you bought it or better?
Would getting it rust proofed at a place like Krown help? It's something I get done annually for Canadian winters.

Justin you have all the answers to all of my bmw questions. Im so excited that i found you. I cant stop watching your vids
Just got new shocks in myself. Cant wait
FCP Euro are awesome. I've got alot from them for my 2006 330Xi all the way from Nigeria, and I've been impressed, Everytime.

Thank you!

can recommend Koni FSD's also, if you are not going to lower your car
I want to do the same this summer not sure what to go with though.
I’ve been waiting for this one
😎
FCP Euro’s video looks alot easier for the rear shocks replacement.
what was the mileage on the car when you changed them?
bilstein should def make kits for those who just do not want to go though setting those things up

Question, how long the previous suspension lasted?
I’ll do a full review soon. The old shocks were 11 years old

Hey man I saw that you also upgraded you springs, I can’t seem to find them on FCP Euro or Rockauto. Do you have a link or brand for them?
How was the ride afterwards?
I did the h&r lowering springs as well and the ride is shit, way to jumpy and bumpy.
Upgrading the shocks and struts made it feel like a different car completely. Huge improvement. When I just had the lowering springs, the ride was terrible. I regret not doing the shocks and struts at the same time I did the springs.

Just saying normal sockets also work instead of the E sockets
Good to know! but with how rusty they were, it was nice to have the extra grip with the E socket
Justin Buice yup

You will need an aligmment after this. I have new wheels coming in the next week or so, so I’m waiting to get those on before I have an alignment done
