    Awesome to see you moving over to more DIY content! Something to note is that the settings on your DIY are probably way more aggressive than what most companies are comfortable giving their clients. The unfortunate thing about being a company in this space is that you have to hedge against lawsuits and injuries in a way you don't normally need to do as a private builder. It's super easy to change the throttle deadband and speed ramp in VESC, and it's a super useful skill to have. I'll have to show you sometime!

  • @ELECTRIC-DNA

    Delay you’re seeing is due to the Hoyt puck, not the vesc settings. Hoyt just finally released a new firmware to remove the baked in throttle curve. I’ve heard that it helps a ton to make it more linear.
    One thing you can try, not a 100% on this as I haven’t tried it myself, is take your current puck and put it in left hand mode (hold R button) and then just turn the remote around in your hand to use it in your right hand. From what I’ve read, for whatever reason the left hand mode has less of the throttle curve.
    Or you can update the firmware on the puck and see what you think. So far it seems people are really liking the new firmware with a faster throttle curve.
    I’ve moved to trigger remotes so don’t have a running puck right now to try it with.

    • @ajplant96
      @ajplant96 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      My understanding is the thing with the puck until recently was smoothing the left hand braking via firmware originally forced right hand acceleration to be weaker, they’ve addressed the throttle curve or whatever it was but not the ramping time difference so left handed use in the right hand is still more responsive. I’d say most likely boutique brands also aren’t doing things like setting vesc’s input deadband and ramping time settings so it’s set all the way up at 15% when it could be as low as 5% with ramping times at 0.2 acc/0.4 dec when they could both be 0.1 or so. Out of the box for vesc is redundant as it is up to the user to choose how they want things set with a default setting that’s generous for beginner riders not getting thrown off as soon as the board moves. Acedeck, the hadean and so on have the most aggressive throttle curve, etc they could be given, imagine like 2-3 times the amps doing that when you’re already on the verge of being thrown off those boards at times.
      With the puck vs the vx4 though as a right handed rider now exclusively using the puck flipped in the left handed setting, 5% input deadband, ramping times at 0, and expo throttle type with throttle curves around +20-30% for daily riding and no curve for track I can say it absolutely creams the vx4 off the line and all the way through the mid-range. Vx4 while nice to use just doesn’t perform anywhere near the puck when you’ve tuned everything. I’ve had 2 vx4 remotes and both have issues within a few months so I’m sticking with the puck with all my experience with both remotes.

    • @BlownMacTruck
      @BlownMacTruck 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It’s has zero to do with the Hoyt’s built in throttle curve. VESC PPM setting defaults to 15% deadband. Drop it to where you want it. Done.
      If you want to adjust throttle *response* then yes, the linear curve firmware update will help you dial it in exactly how you want.

      @@BlownMacTruck yeah the gap before when the throttle begins can be changed with the deadband percent, I was more talking about the acceleration curve.

    • @esk8unity
      @esk8unity  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      for a diy build, sure. but not for the production boards i was using. there are absolutely “out of the box” . buying a 3000-3400 board and having less power off the line than a B-One just doesnt make any sense to me.

    • @benlay750
      @benlay750 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@esk8unity but production VESC are generally boutique boards. More expensive and very powerful, highly customisable due to VESC. These boutique manufacturers operating NOT out of China are supply a non aggressive tune to the new owner of the board. A US company for example does not want to be sued for supplying aggressive settings out of the box. These days there are many very powerful Chinese boards on the market so things have changed. 5 years ago the only super powerful boards were boutique or diy. Knowledge of vesc goes hand in hand with owning a boutique level board or DIY. The reason to own these boards is because you want to take the tech to the next level and perhaps repair your own board when it breaks. Basically VESC is for those with the interest and aptitude to customise it.

    • @esk8unity
      @esk8unity  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@benlay750even worse. american tuned but down tuned cuz they dont wanna get sued? common dude. making it less powerful off the line then a evolve, meepo, b-one , etc etc, no one getting sued. they also have disclaimers allll over there pages about it being for advanced riders and not beginer riders, AND specifically saying changing motor controler settings can/will void ur warranty . i have a screen shot from lacroix saying it to another customer (before they went under) Bio boards website says it, Mboards says it, Hoyt has zero info on there motor controlers, beastboards says about being advance riders and dont purchase if you are not advanced, defiant says it can void warranty, etc etc. why do u think they say that? yall keep talkin about a safety measure and its up to the customer to tweak it, yet no companies want u doing that and its a slippery slope. why not just tune it with GOOD (not crazy) acceleration that matches the throttle curve of its mid range power/top speed like all other boards do? “safety” measures for riders are what mode 1 and 2 are for. theres a reason why bio, lacroix, kaly, superbeast, defiant, hoyt, or mboards has never made a tutorial video on how to adjust settings. they want to avoid customers doing that. Lastly, we will always do out of box comparisons. u know how evolve hadean does 26mph top speed? should i argue it does actually 42 with simple pully/wheel changing? no right. out or the box. works both ways

    • @benlay750
      @benlay750 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      How are you going to sue any of the Chinese brands? They have no liabilities in the USA so they are not exposed to these law suits. That's why US companies are more concerned with safety and as you say have statements on their websites to that effect. Also because these boutique brands come from our local eskate communities they actually care about the safety of their customers. VESC is a living open source project instructions are constantly being updated and the VESC/DIY community provides better instructions than any manufacturer could. I agree that out of the box configs could be more aggressive. IMHO its a mute point why drop $3K plus on technology you will barely scratch the surface of. If you are all dollars and no cents you can always pay someone to help your dial in your settings. My experience with chinese eskate is these companies really care very little about rider safety (my expirence is with exway and acedeck) both companies showed that they care little about serious safety issues I identified with boards that were purchased brand new and barely used when I reached out for help .. One of the reasons the VESC boards mostly still use the hoyt puck is that almost every other remote will occasionally disconnect which can be super dangerous .. from what I've heard the VX4 can cause interference with other boards nearby which if true is sketchy as F @@esk8unity

    • @benlay750
      @benlay750 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      changing wheels and pulleys isn't so simple .. your a pretty light guy in a not very hot climate .. many of us need to be much more careful with this because of the extra heat involved with increasing top speed or midrange punch via gearing. Of course changing VESC settings can void your warranty .. if you adjust settings incorrectly you will blow it up. Its very clear to me that these boutique brands handle safety issues much more carefully than the china brands and they are catering to a much more informed and generally mature customer base. I love your channel and your work. I accept you have a different opinion and I respect that @@esk8unity

    The issue with high-end boards is that they are more likely to be used by a wealthy middle-aged out-of-shape individual, rather than by an athletic person in their 20s or 30s. That's why, for safety reasons, it's necessary to by default incorporate delays to prevent the board from swiftly fly beneath the rider's feet. The advantage of Vesc is that it allows for easy adjustment of the acceleration and deceleration curves, as well as the dead spots.

    • @esk8unity
      @esk8unity  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      i respectfully disagree. most high end boards have bold warning labels with high performance warnings and not for beginner riders. they also have warranty claims about changing motor controllers beyond stock will void warranty. regardless of any of that, this is what mode 1 and 2 are for. mode 3 on a boutique board shouldnt be less torque off the line than a B-one/Ownboard/meepo/evolve/onsra etc etc. just my humble opinion based on the results and experience.

      About $1300 in parts. A d about a week to complete and test, set as wished to perform by customer. It's very costly for most but it's the price of bringing a 1985 Toyota to a 2023 tesla lol. Abit of exaggeration but you get the point, the condition of this board before the rebuild you wouldn't payed $400 for the board for the many yrs. of raw abuse it showed. I know some might say I rather get a new board for that price but when a board is your first love and has sentimental Value to you, you will put the work tours that board and have it as you ever dreamed it was from day one. It's a DIY board bro. Do it yourself. Tuning the VESC how you want it isn't the same as swapping out hardware. The stock settings are for safety and the largest range of applications. Needs to be tuned to rider. Acceleration will depend on rider weight, battery voltage, motor kv etc. Hardly think it's fair to criticize something you can easily fix with a small amount of effort...?

      huh? i know my board is a diy board. its tuned just right. u talking about the other two PRODUCTION boards? no there not diy boards. idk why u guys are so angry about the results. “a safety reason” yet thats what mode 1 and 2 are for. safety concern yet its slower than a B-one board off the line… lastly, all these companies either have a BOLD warning label saying its not meant for beginners riders, ride at your own risk. some have ZERO info about there esc at all. and most have a disclaimer saying it can void warranty if changed beyond stock settings from manufacturer. why do think lacroix, kaly, bio board, hoyt, beastboard, defiant or anyone else has a “how to video” ? “criticized” is a strong word. its simple facts of the results. If i show you the slow results of a stock evolve your not gonna get upset are ya? even tho you can put smaller pullies and bigger wheels on you can change its top speed. but we dont do that for review purposes either. works both ways
