VinFast VF8 & VF9 - The Truth No One Will Tell You (First Look & Deep Dive Review)

- VinFast hit the market here in the United States a couple years ago with quite the fanfare and accolades of prominent journalists and periodicals. Given the glowing reviews from big names and publications, I was surprised at what I found when I drive and explored both the VF8 and VF9 for myself.
The VinFast brand is relatively new here in the United States and currently only sells in California. While VinFast clearly has ambitious plans, including a massive assembly and production facility in North Carolina, upon closer look, I argue there is quite a bit of work to do.
VinFast originally arrived to the U.S. with limited range options, with EPA rating under 200 miles. In these days, EPA rating under 200 is nearly unheard of, with few exceptions. That said, the options that do come in with limited range like this, come at a significantly lower price than VinFast and from household names like Nissan.
This newcomer is actually pricing their new arrivals more than the most popular brands, including Tesla. So when you are asking for a premium over a Tesla, you better be bringing a lot to the table. Unfortunately for VinFast, that premium price tag does not come with a premium vehicle experience.
VinFast has their VF8, similar in size to a Model Y, priced several thousand more than the most popular EV in the world. On top of that, the Tesla Model Y qualifies for a $7,500 EV Tax credit, where the VinFast does not. The VF9 is the same story, price several thousand more than a Tesla Model X, although the VF9 does come standard with 7 passenger interior.
The VinFast VF8 comes in north of $46k, and range tops out at 264 miles EPA. The range and lower end interior materials are not necessarily a problem, until you get to that price tag, which is more than a Tesla Model Y, and more than many other EV's in this category. Stepping up to the VF9, the price tag soars to $83k, but at least it gives you 330 respectable EPA rated miles of range. Still, this comes with the same interior materials that lack a luxury feel you would expect in a car that comes in north of $80k.
This is really the big issue with VinFast. There is a major disconnect between what the company seems to think is appropriate pricing for their cars and what consumers here in the U.S. expect at these price ranges. The fit and finish, less than luxurious materials and lack of brand recognition or supporting service infrastructure can all be overlooked, but at the right price.
If the VF8 was priced in the $30's, and the VF9 in the $50's, these would be great options to consider. However, they are priced significantly higher than these figures, and for this reason, I am not confident VinFast will be here to stay, unless there is a big shift in price or product.

I guess their idea of not being like the Japanese and Koreans to come into the US market with cut rate cars is fine, but their cars needed to feel like they are worth significantly more than what they're charging if they want to play at this price point. Instead, from what I've seen, most people think it's not worth what they're charging, especially when compared to the competition. That's going to be a big problem for them.
Exactly. They are importing a Kia and charging Mercedes prices. There is nothing wrong with selling this car as is, it just needs to be priced to reflect the quality that it is.

I cancelled my deposit on one of these after about a year of consideration last week . I’m thinking the same things about Fisker.

I was considering the VF8 for my next vehicle. However the constant software issues and other quality issues keep me from buying it. I want Vinfast to succeed. But the need to improve the quality of these vehicles. Hopefully if they ever build that North Carolina plant, the U.S built vehicles will be better.

Thanks for the review. I had looked at them & was intrigued but them being a new company at least in the US the price point made me look elsewhere. You’re also right about the interior. I don’t I like it when auto reviewers complain about an interior on an economic car but if you are going to be paying a premium price I do expect better quality. I’ll have to wait a few years to see if they get better.

If you say this car is not finished well, it may be true, because this car company is still new. But thinking that the car's interior is made of poor quality materials is definitely wrong, and believe that this is just an emotional assessment of an inexperienced person. I know this company very well, they pay great attention to materials and suppliers. Their materials actually meet the same standards as Mercedes BMW.
They evaluate mainly by emotion. In fact, many car youtubers always think they are experts, but in reality there are very few people who have a deep understanding of it, especially evaluating interior materials

I've seen the car yesterday at Toronto Auto Show, same impression exactly. Waaaaaaaaaaay cheaper vehicle than they're asking for. Especially the leather and the stitching and the bulkiness and the feel of the uneven stitching on the steering wheel.....plus the VF9 model shown was all black I side, which is really a dark dark gray elephant skin leather imitation....not good.....Maybe the VF9 at 55k CAD or a put 40k USD would make sense.....

A lot has changed in the last two months. This company is nimble and responsive to market demands. Price for lease is significantly subsidized bring the cost down a lot.

Everything is relative. Viet Nam's idea of high quality is totally different than ours. To THEM, these cars would be luxurious.

I don't know what you want to convey. But in Vietnam, I confirm that there is no car in the same segment that is as well equipped as Vinfats. If you want to own a well-equipped car like Vinfast, you have to spend double or even triple the amount of money.
I agree VF9 has a lot of features and toys to play than others cars that may call as options. But,those options are not high quality and don’t expect to last.

That's why we ride motorbikes a lot but that doesn't mean motorbikes in our country are expensive. The luxury motorbike segment has prices ranging from 10,000 USD to 15,000 USD. On average, a family usually owns 2 to 4 cars with prices ranging from 3,000 to 10,000 USD. Currently, the car ownership rate is at Vietnam's population is 11.7%, which is quite small, but because car prices are too high + the roads in our country are quite small compared to the population density, so traveling by car is not an easy task. Traffic jams are an everyday thing with motorbikes, that's not an issue. Our country has few cars but that doesn't mean we don't understand anything about it or can't afford to buy it, just need our government to remove the tax on non-essential consumable products by 120%. price and environmental tax of 60%, the number of car purchases in our country will increase dramatically and the car ownership rate will increase by more than 60%.

Here's the problem: in America, we are accustomed to high quality cars. I a 3rd world country like Viet Nam, a Vinfast car WOULD be considered high quality. THAT is the disconnect.
Yeah~Vinfast outsources pretty much all the parts from other manufacturers, so they have little rooms to wiggle the price unless the owner of the group is willing to either break even or take only small business profits. As far as I understand, Vin group is very successful in Vietnam with strong ties with its communist party/leader. But why does it have to be EVs in the US? I understand the privce point BTG. I am buying a 3-row EV SUV within the next 6 months, and VF9 won't be it because i have other options. If the EV can go 500 miles of range in that price, I would be sold, though. Thank you BTG.

The look of the car is fine. In fact if it had a better interior it would actually work in favor of the car. The simple fact is the overwhelming majority of people just want a normal looking car, not one that looks like a spaceship. The value for the price is what’s going to hold them back not the looks.

It's very risky to buy a car from a new startup car company. Unless their price is a lot cheaper than the competition, not many people will take a chance.
Agree, most I hear is not good, lots of service issues too. Not sure they have the structure in the US to support customers, at least not yet. My point is, why bother when you have Tesla and their new updated models in 2024 and beyond?

a very nice electric car, I find it has a comfortable space. I don't think it comes from Vietnam. but Vinfast actually did very well. I heard they have improved the 2024 version to be able to travel over 600km. Let's wait and see

Hope they have the wherewithal to last and improve. Marketing alone won’t do it. When Hyundai trying to penetrate the US market, they came in with a 10yr/100k miles bumper to bumper warranty, which was unheard of in those days, and that is how they were able to build customer’s confidence. What does Vinfast have to draw in the crowd other than just a lot of marketing noises? 😏

Great review. I saw a video that said the VF8 was rushed out, thus the frame is from an ICE vehicle, and thus the ride is awful and nauseating.

As of December 2023, VF has not managed to sell any cars in the United States. The majority of vehicles have been leased and designated as "press cars" for endorsed reviewers.
Additionally, it's worth noting that VF, despite being assembled in Vietnam, is originally a Chinese-made product, despite its declaration as a Vietnamese product - a claim that can be considered misleading.

The essence is quality, this is the car of a young car company. I think they did well. I don't think it matters where the car comes from. For example, Tesla cars are made in China and most of the components are made in China. But honestly, Tesla's interior looks terrible and boring. it looks too monotonous. Material looks not good too much plastic.
If you think Tesla has too much plastic, wait until you get into this more expensive VinFast…

Most SUV's 3rd row designed for kids and pets not for adult and most of buyers knew that. The presentation is really taller than a 15yro kids. I do agreed the price is high but if you look at others cars manufacture at that price range do have plastics at some particular places that he pointing in the video. Vinfast has 10yrs unlimited miles warranty on the battery, doesn't matter if you own, buy or lease and 2nd or 3rd owner. It does has some benerfit compare to others car companies. Tesla battery ranges from $5,000 to $20,000, and you'll need to replace the battery every 10 to 20 years, if you happen to own a used car like I do then you need to be prepared 10k-20k ready in the bank.

2. Since they have no control over the design of the vehicles, there are numerous complains from their VF owner clubs on FB how their VF failed. Engine failure, windows not closing, months in service with no real solutions.
3. Inflating their sales volume in N. America and sold most vehicles to GSM (their own company) to manipulate VFS prices.
VF is a money hungry company that will do whatever to get it no matter the consequences. A humorous drama to unfold soon....
