Hey Quill, I've been playing this game since around '99 when it was by a different name and in it's infancy. It's come a long way to where it is now and is massively entertaining/life sapping at times. Despite my long running tenure at the helm of many a team over the years, I have never really considered watching a let's play. It never really struck me as a game that would be entertaining to merely watch and not be a part of, but once again as ever you have proven me wrong because of your take on it and your style. I have watched many series of yours that were an absolute joy merely because of the way you went about them and the level of meticulous detail you went into. I often still browse through your back catalogue to have some background interesting ambience whilst I'm working or doing other things (Right now I'm on alpha 16 no turret RimWorld series, and recently loved your Sid Meiers Prates vod uploads). After catching this video I will be going back and watching your first season with interest. You have a good grasp of this game and I will be intermittently playing along whilst watching your videos in my own FM17 save. All the best as ever and keep up the good work.
championship manager isn't football manager (fyi). They split up, so yes they have the same members as CM but CM still existed up until very recently. 99/00 was the best game in football management simulation games which is why they had creative differences in what way they wanted to go. 2010, FM overtook the whole industry and no one gives the others a chance (hardly).
I'm well aware of the history, considering I said I had been around since then. It wasn't relevant to my overarching point. It was just a quick background and lead in. I even mentioned it was a different name, and since the breakup this is that game as the FM series kept everything the old game was, whilst CM went in a weird direction, ergo this is still the spiritual successor to that franchise and CM afterward is a different entity and not applicable to anyone around since before then. The reason there is no competition is because noone can achieve the same success to compete, when the current leader is so good. There is no room for competition and no real need for it. There are many management games they just fill different nichés to varying degrees. Anyway, replies to unwarranted pedantry aside, my comment was about the content in essence, not the game as a whole.

I've been around since the beginning, probably why I am more intrigued with the history and how the industry developments. Lack of competition is not always the best. However, FM seems to be going upward rather than stagnating. But I don't like some of the changes they made in recent years...that's another story entirely however.
Finally FM17 is back! The first season was one of my favorite series ever on this channel since the AI can actually put up a challenge and doesn't go into brain dead mode.
Sweeeeet! I wasnt keen on the first season until I came in later and I ended up falling in love with the series. Glad you brought this back Quill. Not my kind of game but you make it entertaining.
Mixed feelings about only seeing home games. On the one had appreciate it speeds up the series and your time editing/playing. On the other, really enjoyed the breakdown and development game by game of in-game drama, player progress, tactical tweaks, etc. Anyways, good stuff, looking forward to it!

He's not at the club anymore, he's not even in Scotland anymore, he transfered to an English club. It may be a small club in England but it's still a step way up from Ayr, and he's a proper full time professional now. Alas sinse he was out of a contract Walsall picked him up on a free transfer. As of this time he's done well, getting full time in all the past 4 league game they played, and even made an assist to a goal, he also got full time in their cup match against Sheff Utd. Compaired to Quills game, his position also developed, as he's been used as (right) midfielder in the 2 most recent games, but I don't know if this is a permanent repositioning, or it's due to lack of alternatives at the club.
Hey Quill, have quite a bit of experience with this game (literally thousands of hours, for shame) so hope you don't a bit of unsolicited advice. Looking at your 4-2-4 tactic, I'd be a bit concerned by the pairing you have in central midfield. I can understand the desire to play a box-to-box midfielder and then pair him with someone on a Defensive duty, with the premise that the latter would hold position in midfield and cover the gaps. However, you have selected a ball-winning midfielder on defend duty which I think is a risk. Ball-winning midfielders have a relatively high "closing down" instruction meaning that they will look to chase down opposition players who have the ball quite high up the park. At times this can be good but, when you're only playing with two in the middle, it means that when the opposition get past him they are clean through on your back four which can be very dangerous. Personally I'd recommend switching the ball-winning midfielder to a straight "CM(D)". This player will hold position more and provide a solid base for the more attacking players to push forward from whilst also providing an easy out ball to recycle possession.
Quill you should tell your scouts to find players with contracts less than 1 year who are unhappy at their club. Very often you can convince amazing youngsters to come to yours at the end of their contract with the promise of 1st team football without paying any transfer fee.
Woo! My favorite Qull18 series is back! Boo on not running every game, though. I may have season tickets for the home games, but I'd still listen to the away games on the radio. Also, is a recording of the preseason livestream anywhere?
I feel a bit bad for Sean McKirdy, you were soo entousiastic about him when you picked him up, but you completely forgot about him when you returned from travels and he stayed on your 'meh' list ever after.
You don't have to look at natural/favourite positions. When a player has the skills you want for a role, he should be fine. Playing a player out of position only causes the decision stat to drop a tiny bit. Glad you're back with FM again! :D
You are good with any management game. You got skills. I have played Football Manager series since Championship Manager 01/02 (it became Football Manager 2005) .Nowadays i usually play FM with a team that is in English lower leagues (tier 4-6) and is expected to finish 1st. Then i have sort of cheat (downloaded a working tactic and used FM Scout program). That's not the problem. I usually have used 1 tactic all the time and almost ragequit every time when i lost to a surprisingly poor team.

I totally agree with you. But i think that more videos and following the progression is more fun. But that is only my opinion.
I imagine this change might lead to a longer game, though.
