  • The fifth movement from Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique. It begins with an introduction in three parts, marked Largo, then Allegro, followed by the sounding of bells. Following this is the Dies Irae theme followed by the Ronde du sabbat (Witche's Round Dance).
    In this movement the artists, heavily under the influence of opium, dreams that he is dead and that his funeral is attended by goblins, scorcerers and monsters. The orchestration is inventive and, in places, incredibly modern sounding. For a full analysis of this work, by Stephen Johnson, go to;

    Loved how you 'show' the piece. Very well thought out as a means of providing comprehension of program music.

    In the opening, you can hear a demon or something like it tip-toeing up to a witch and going 'boo' and then laughing.

    The most controversial symphony ever written, thank you for the phrase by phrase interpretation. Has been a favorite of mine for over fifty years. I learned more about this incredible work by watch all five movements three times today, than in my whole life. D. Alexandr D'Maddalena

    I love your analyses.
    You really explore what the different aspects of the music really mean, and how they add to the narrative.

    Sounds like they applied filter sweeping in the mixing-mastering stage of production! Listen to the final C Major chord stabs and how they seems to "change", there is a rising quality to them as the filter sweeps harmonic series, the winds of a terrible hellish inferno! Interesting choice :) 9:44

    The triplets in the woodwind are actually answered by triplets on the horns not the trumpets :) And the idee fixe is played on a clarinet in E flat :)

    yeah i think any form attributed to any movements in symphonie fantastique is quite loose. thanks for looking at brahms. this is a pretty cool thing you do here.

    Hey, in the Idee Fixe with the clarinet, isn't it mean to be in Eb? not Bb?

  • @corksmusic1
    @corksmusic1  12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @jndillaha I think the form is pretty loose because Berlioz's main intention was to create a scene, through music, of chaos and disorientation - it is really the programme (or story) that dictates the sequence of musical events.
    It IS possible however to imagine where, for example, the development, coda, and recapitulation could be, but overall, I reckon Berlioz is thinking in terms of story-telling which, for the time, is pretty innovative.
    I'll look at Brahms' and let you know how I get on

    two questions: first, i have heard that this particular movement is either devoid of any true form, or at least that its form is somewhat ambiguous or loose. do you feel that it has a definite form? secondly, will you do brahms's 3rd symphony next, please?
