The Metrodome could go from baseball to football in 4-5 hours. Then back to baseball in 12 hours because they had to scrub away the football lines. That's not terrible. The reason multipurpose stadiums went away is twofold: 1) Greedy owners wanting more revenue...not having to share with the other sport. 2) Compromised sight lines and seats that are far away from the action. Multipurpose stadiums tend to be awkward for at least one of the sports because of geometry. The Metrodome was OK for football but terrible for baseball. The O.co Coliseum sucks for both baseball and football.
+Rory McCabe They don't ever play on the same day at home, as far as I know. The schedulers deliberately avoid that. If a situation arose when they absolutely had to (say, in the MLB Playoffs), one team would probably play very early in the day to allow enough time for a switchover for a night game. But even then, I think they try very hard to avoid that.
Anthony Pedalino it’s valid points, fans don’t wanna play for crap seats, football players don’t wanna play on dirt, multipurpose stadiums work, just baseball and football are too different to share a field easily
If they just switched it from baseball to football once in October and then back to baseball in April, I could understand. But at the end of August they are going to convert it to football for two exhibition games (the A's will be on the road), then they'll have to switch it back to baseball for the September 2nd game, then back to football for September 18th, then baseball on the 19th, and then football again for the October 9th game.
David Lafleche Before the Raiders moved to L.A. in the early 80's, the football field used to be laid out with the goal lines running from home plate to center field. You still had to remove the pitcher's mound, but that was about it. The sightlines for football were terrible tho because the "prime" seats were at baseball field level and you couldn't see over the players on the sidelines. When they moved back to Oakland in 95 they built that "football stadium" seating in the "baseball stadium" outfield and turned the football field 90 degrees. That's why you get all this "stupid" reconfiguring going on during conversion! You're reconfiguring a stadium that was originally designed to be reconfigured, only at a 90 degree different angle!
According to several stadium websites, the Raiders had to do it that way because their schedule conflicted with the baseball team. After baseball season ended, the Coliseum went to its standard football setup, with temporary seating in center field, and the gridiron running from first to third base. If you look for a Raiders vs. Bengals video (1976), you'll see that setup.
David Lafleche Actually, according to Wiki, we're both right. Back in the day. The football field used to run as I previously described while the baseball season was still ongoing. When the A's were done, the Raiders switched the football field direction foul pole to foul pole. Learn something new every day! Still cumbersome way of doing things! What were they smoking back then? LOL!
Even worse: Metropolitan Stadium had a double-deck pavilion in left field. For one or two years, they would dismantle the whole thing, then reassemble it closer to the sideline! After a while, they stopped doing that. But The Met had to be a lousy place to watch football. The seats were much too far away.
The A's have threatened to move many times in the last 20 years. The only thing keeping them there is that no other city has a viable baseball stadium.
Beautiful Oakland Colosseum? I don’t think I have ever heard anyone associate this stadium with beauty. I don’t think any city should be building $1.5-2 Billion stadiums for billionaire owners, maybe share with the NFL or team paying the majority of the costs in some situations. However this stadium is an embarrassment the plumbing must be replaced , water and sewer systems leak, the locker rooms have a bad mold problem. When it rains field drainage is poor as well the water pours into the rooms below the field. Al Davis should have stayed in LA permanently or paid for much of the cost to tear down the colosseum
i always wondered why sometimes their field had dirt all over it. honestly this stadium is a horrible idea and the raiders should really get a new one soon.
These stadiums were a big deal in the 70s thru the 90s when city’s paid for the Stadiums but once owners starting owning them it was the death nail in multipurpose stadiums! #IconicEra

2019 is the last time this will ever happen sunday December 15 2019 is the last ever home game for the OAKLAND Raiders before they become the Las Vegas Raiders, the oakland coliseum is outdated and the Raiders are the only team that still plays home games in a baseball stadium

MLB makes sure playoff games don't interfere with NFL games. Even in cities where the stadiums are close(Baltimore, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Kansas City, etc) they won't schedule on the same day because it would be a disaster.
This is very interesting and I had no idea that the grounds crew had to do this before every Raiders' game. Someday, it would be great if the A's had a "baseball-only" park of their own, so the crew wouldn't have to do this all of the time.
Vegas isn't happening, they have the funding for a stadium but if you think the league isn't going to hit Davis with a fine of at least 500 million to relocate you're delusional. And they don't have the money planned for that
