  • In this video I wanted to do a deep dive into finding the best possible pencil sharpener and by best I just mean something that's very versatile very affordable and something that's going to last.
I have never seen a pencil sharpener perform so well! The long tapered point is usually only achieved with a crank handled sharpener so I was staggered to see how well the Kum Automatic Long Point performed in this unboxing review.
    KUM Automatic Brake Sharpener:
Features: Dual holes for different pencil sizes, automatic brake to prevent over-sharpening, high-carbon steel blades.
Best For: Consistent results and longevity. Suitable for those needing a high-performance sharpener.

Check out the Kum Masterpiece sharpener as well. It's the big brother to the automatic. You have the ability to make the point as long as you want. It does have a stopper, but the stopper can be removed.
It's really good for graphite pencils. Or if you want a very long point to do large areas. Or just to have two sharpeners one for dark pencils the other for light.
There is also a Kum one step long point magnesium sharpener. I got mine on eBay for eight dollars. It's good to keep in your bag as a backup. It's small and lightweight.
I also like the M+R brass sharpeners. They are very well made. The good thing is the Kum and M+R sharpeners can use the same blades.
Also the Blackwing 2 step sharpener is the same as the Kum Automatic sharpener. Just so you know in case of an emergency. I find some art stores will carry the Blackwing but not the Kum. I prefer the Kum because it does come with extra blades and people complain the lid breaks off.

Thanks for the great tips! I’ve heard a lot about the Kum Masterpiece sharpener but haven’t tried it yet. It’s good to know about the removable stopper and how versatile it can be for graphite pencils or long points. I’ll definitely look into the Kum one-step long point magnesium sharpener too - sounds like a perfect backup for my bag! The M+R brass sharpeners also seem like a solid option, especially with the shared blades between Kum and M+R. Appreciate the info on the Blackwing sharpener as well, good to know about the similarity with the Kum Automatic. Cheers for sharing all this! 😊

How often do you have to change the sharpener?

This sharpener comes with 2 spare blades, I just changed the wood sharpening part when it didn't look like it was smoothly cutting the wood anymore. I'm sure that the other blade that sharpens the lead will last a while.

I use coloured pencils on detailed artwork. I purchased this pencil sharpener and I didn't like it at all. It takes a lot of work and time to sharpen one pencil. You sharpened five pencils and the video was more than 8 minutes long. How quickly does the sharpener wear down a pencil?

Thanks for watching! I totally get your concern about the time it takes to sharpen with the KUM Automatic Sharpener. It’s definitely a slower process compared to some other sharpeners, especially for detailed work. In terms of how quickly it wears down the pencil, it does use a bit of the lead as it sharpens to get that fine point, but the sharpener’s precision can be worth it if you need an extra-sharp tip for fine details. I would recommend it more for controlled sharpening rather than rapid use, but it does take some patience. For a more quicker sharpener my next go to is the grip trio of which I use all the holes for sharpening colored pencil. Hope that helps!

Hi, This is generally how I use my pencils and in this order - I build up my layers with softer waxy pencils like Caran d'Ache Luminance & Derwent lightfast depending on what I am drawing. Then I switch to Polychromos and a few Caran d'Ache Pablo pencils for the fine details as these are much harder. I buy all from open stock as to buy the only pencils that I need. I hope this helps.
