- This is the story about how I built a Japanese Garden in my own backyard, with my own bare hands, and with no help from any contractors or experts. The video quality is a little crude at first but it gets better I promise. Bonus video at the end: the "mini tool temple" stop motion timelapse! Thanks for watching!
Plant list:
japanese hakone grass (wasn't doing good in the deep shade)
japanese maple
dwarf weeping blue spruce (doing OK in the shade but not great)
golden juniper shrub (not doing good, looking very thin, probably too much shade, but still alive)
creeping juniper (doing a lot better)
redbud tree
lilly of the valley
hosta
meadow rue (died, too much shade? not enough water?)
coral bells (one died, and the other is doing great)
ferns:
japanese painted fern (died)
ostrich fern
frosty fern
christmas fern (haven’t found any yet)
for the rock composition:
boxwood (left untrimmed yet conical, or heavily trimmed into a bonsai)
dwarf japanese maple? trimmed heavily every year
golden dwarf hinoki cypress (doing great!)
dward cypress cultivars (most of these died)
moss (what I bought never turned green and I have sinse replaced with a lush field of clover)
scottish moss (all died, was too shady and dry)
ground cover and vines:
periwinkle
english ivy
wintercreeper
New this year:
japanese pachysandra (in a container)
Hey love this video! Do you have a list of the plants you bought? I’ve got a planter in front of my house that I want to turn into a Japanese theme. I live in PA so zone 6.
Actually I do have a list!

THIS IS ICONIC!!!! YOU ABSOLUTELY ACHIEVED THE PERFECT AT HOME OASIS!!!! The clip towards the end of the boards being nailed individually is interesting! All I can think of is the work, love, and patience that was involved in between each frame! That's what social media doesn't show us! Bravo! Totally inspired!!! Amazing work!!!
at 1:20 and Im sobbing NOT THE MOSS
JUST CLAPPING OVER HERE.... YOU GAVE ME HOPE! HUBBY SAYS THANK YOU... AMAZING JOB....we are excited to start... hubby also says thanks for the inspiration... we got this -- YOU sir inspired other humans on this planet... and that is what life is about!! thank you
WOW that's EPIC, Love love it, absolutely gorgeous. Is jealous. 1st time seeing this, now i'm hooked on your videos. from South Australia.
feeling inspired thank you
Thank you for watching! Glad I could inspire you!
Nice work! Enjoying the videos and creativity
Oh, it's absolutely lovely!! I've always wanted a Japanese inspired garden/backyard and this makes me feel like I can do it too. Well done!
I love the cinematography!! Great work on the project and archiving it.
This is very well done! It looks fun, achievable, stress relieving, and a real eye pleaser. Thank you for sharing!
thank you so much!
@@ThisOldJalopy so I’d like to know where do you get the large rocks and smaller too. Not the gravel though. Nice job
gardening reduces stress. yes sure, the stress caused from needing to tidy the garden haha
great job btw
What a beautiful transformation! You did an awesome job! Thank you for sharing ❤❤❤
Bit of a tip for you, if I may be so bold! Instead of shovelling the gravel out of the pick up, try scooping it out with a bucket and then pouring it into the wheelbarrow. I find it quicker that way. Other than that, sit back and enjoy a well earned cold one in your new garden space, nice job!
that garden and that pickups patina is a beauty
Great job. Very done on the Japanese Garden!
Love the video and the way your garden turned out! Great job! Your dog is awesome and well-behaved by-the-way.
Dude your truck is amazing, love to see it getting used like that.
Very beautiful. I love the doggy and cat too.
Love it!! Great job!!
Great take on some Japanese elements in your small space. Loved the gate and use of trellis for fencing.
Very cool... particularly love the fence and gate. good job!!
Hey! We live in Derby, KS! This is so cool! I'd love to create something like this in my yard! Thanks for sharing!
Now I’m jealous of your truck and your yard!
I must say I'm "turning Japanese" in my own garden of late. Japanese style anyway. Plants closely pruned. A lot more space between the plants. Different ground covers of gravel, stone wood and bark etc. Loving it!
Beautiful 😻
Oh wow, awesome job!!! And video
Great job! Inspired by your ideas.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful, inspiring video! What a peaceful garden, welcoming for humans, dogs, and cats alike. ❤
I absolutely love your mini tool temple and reason for it. The great conjunction was such a powerful moment! God bless!
I liked the fence before you cleaned it. :) Great job on the gateway!
Wow! Love the amazing results! Lots of work but you must be so happy with the wonderful way it turned out. So relaxing. So beautiful.
Love how your dog was there throughout the journey. 🐾
You did a PHENOMENAL job!! Looks Beautiful!!😀👏🙌🤗😍💃💃💃💃
Congratulations ! A great japanese garden and video to boot.
This is one of my favorite videos, I hope to get to do this someday!
Dude, you do cool stuff. Thanks for sharing.
Wow great video and very inspiring
Very nice great work . Love doing landscapes relaxes me and I absolutely love n enjoy doing it.
Man great work! I’m in the planning stage of doing something similar in my new little backyard But I’m gonna have 3-4bonsai benches incorporated along the fences. I just thought, some non creeping bamboo would look really good in your garden. Thx for video
Great job! Kinda makes me want to move to a house just so I could build something like this haha
Wow. A lot of work well done🌺
Beautiful transformation
love the music change lol
Extraordinary thank you for sharing, learned some tricks and ideas. Awesome to see the whole family partaking, esp the fur babies! Great space for contemplation and refreshing. 🙏
Dude, fantastic job and love the dog
I watch these videos and so many people think they can DIY there own design which comes out terrible. You are not one of those people. I really like the job you did. Small space but really nicely done. Congratulations on a beautiful space. Perhaps a small water feature.
That’s super beautiful!!!!! I love it
Great design Japanese garden, the finishing touches, looks amazingly beautiful, new subbed here my friend👍
This was one of THE MOST inspiring videos I have seen on TH-cam in a long time. My back yard is a mess. We finally have the money to fix the fence and do something about it. You should "repost this" with a garden update.❤❤❤❤ Thank you!
Beautiful job!
Respect. Looks amazing. That jalopy of yours really takes a beating.
Just beautiful thanks for sharing 💕
It's always a good feeling when you got privacy and your own little sanctuary. 😌
this looks fab
So impressed with your hard scapes . Great job. Mind if I borrow a few of your ideas? From Massachusetts
Nice one 👍🏾
Man looks great. Good job on the video too
Looks awesome! I like your fence. I need to get creative, so my pups don't destroy my zen garden that's almost finished!
So nice.
Well done that man, congrats it looks great.
Feel the tranquility! ⛩️
I love your passion ❤️ 💕 🕊✌️☮️
Beautiful
Turned out so beautiful and relaxing! Did you follow a plan for the garden gate? I love it and keen to try something similar!
beautiful small Japanese garden, I love the idea of the conifers in the pots. I've got a small garden area Im hoping to turn into Japanese garden but its daunting how Im going to get any big rocks by myself and watching a guy struggle with a rock makes the rock thing even more daunting.
Agreed. I’m going to try hypertufa as lighter option to give stone looking elements
We are also in a process of building our own little Zen garden in the backyard, so these kind of videos give us many ideas and inspiration ❤
BTW, what is the structure built in 6:53?
Thank you!
Nice truck !
the powerwashing made a really big difference. beautiful job on your project
Have you considered planting Sago palms? Have you considered buying the cedar fence to give it the blackened look.SHOU SUGI BAN YAKISUGI
Beautiful transformation. Now you just need a water feature to make it fully Japanese style ;)
This is awesome man, hoping to do’s one thing similar myself. Congrats on a job well done sir :)
Your wife is a lucky woman. Great work!
Great job!
Cool garden we want to do something similar. If you want long term exterior wood protection try the Japanese technique Yaki Sugi then good beyond that coating the carbonized surface with a mixture of bees wax and boiled linseed oil.
Pretty Nice Just Like The Star Wars Ending 👌💯
The dog seems happy.
AWESOME!
what da dawg doin
where are you located people, where is this ?
Kansas Toto, Kansas.
This is dope
That shite is sic bro. Signed not a damn lawn jockey✊
Cute Pup
nice job, drastic improvement. but i think you should hit that garden with a round 2 of improvements and it should include a more permanent solution for the pathway, and also groundcover whetehr it be planted or hardscape for those areas that are exposed soil
GREAT JOB .....CHEERS
wow man weldone..... wish I could be of help. love this
You should add an eye right in the middle of the pyramid
The final fantasy 10 remix was a nice touch!
Looks like you Mahomezed it. Sorry from California about the Super Bowl
Where you telling the stone to become lighter ?😂😂😂 love your garden
Awesome
grate job..looks like at japanese spa backyard
Hi what tool did u use to cut the roots?
Goals 🤩
Nice Squareback.
I need an ID on that DnB tune lol
2:45- Nice 411 squareback in the background.
Lovely! very romantic...no doubt...you may enjoy this atmosphere lot!!!!
Not Japanese dude...but a great garden none the less...good job...
Japanese? Japanese American? Or perhaps American Japanese? Very beautiful and inviting, great job 👏
🤦🏼♀️ There is always someone like you in the comments. It’s obvious that it is Japanese inspired. To which the Japanese would more than likely endorse as well taking into consideration they have given so many cherry trees etc. away as gifts to other countries. There are Japanese gardens in almost every country of the world and many universities.
Your comment is picky and condescending with a backhanded compliment at the end.
Japanese gardens are meant to symbolize peace & harmony for all. I assume you lean to the American garden side more than the Japanese garden side.
You are going to need to prune or remove those large deciduous trees or all that shade will eventually kill those conifers.
yeah its hard to find conifers that will do OK in shade. I tried to find ones that don't require full sun (like pines) and then will see how they do. The ones that don't survive will get replaced. Well, two years later, most are doing OK and some needed to be replaced. The dwarf blue spruce is doing great! The golden/chartreuse juniper bush is looking pretty thin but is still alive, might move it a sunny spot in the front yard. The other, darker juniper (creeping juniper?) is doing great. The cedar died, but they always die. I put a japanese maple in its place. That's the key to a green thumb, replace the dead plants with new ones!
But removing the big trees (Hackberry) is out of the question. Even if I wanted to, which I don't, they're on the neighbor's side of the fence.
I got to say I thought the pyramid was going to be the puppy's home.
