Long ago (1969) I made a contest in the Sahara desert (near Djanet) with my little Citroën 2CV (625 cm3 !!!) with 2 persons VS a Land-Rover (old type) with 5 persons. The 2CV arrived first, after being stuck 3 times (but very light and easy to set back in a few minutes) while the Land was stuck only ONCE, but they have been shovelling sand for one hour or so !!! Weight, tyres, driver ... this is what makes the difference. The little Lada Niva and the Suzuki Jimny are just incredible (both quite light).
Dacia driver managed it but Land Rover driver took ages to learn how to deal with the hill Says as much about the drivers as well as the cars and tyres
same tyres same driver, would be a fairer test, as the Duster is made in Romania this test is suspect, being English does not mean i prefer the Land Rover ( this model of Land Rover failed the crash test on top gear) as my last 2 cars were a Jeep Grand Cherokee and Wrangler the grand daddies of all 4x4s but i do like the Dacia Duster for its price and ability.

The Freelander is already on the second hand market and no one would profit from selling it Land Rover has a tradition in the production of Off road vehicles. The french has tradition in french love...
no offence but its clear that the freelander driver is quite poor, taking wrong line regularly and taking off power at bad times, tyres and weight will also play a part. you can see at one point on the hill where the LR driver takes his foot off gas for a second then reapplies it all four or at lest 3 wheels are spinning ! no 4x4 can do any more than turn all 4 wheels ! if car still doesnt move its either weight, tyres or poor driving, in this case id say its a mix of all 3
Agree with Fekete, the Land rover driver didn't have a clue how to do it, too much power for starters. Probably a road biased tyre as well. Just buy a Jeep.
duster - 2011-2013 land rover 1999-2003 let s put a rover from 2013 or at least one with the same sell-price (around 6-7000 euro) with the same tires and driver. and see the diffrence. i am from romania, but sorry dacia, there is land rover we are talking about. :):)
Could have been done to make the Dacia look better than the freelander ,plenty of freelander video's on here showing how good they can be with a GOOD driver and tyres .

Imi place ca multi fac tot felul de comentari...ca la turat,ca nu stiu ce i-a mai facut...voi aveți habar cãte grade are rampa aia......păi si pe ploaie o urci greu darmite pe zapada....sunt șofer de tir si stiu ce înseamna o palma de zapada pe asfalt...nu îti intra un pai în fund cand vine o rampa sau panta...
These guys are just flooring it and hope for the best. The duster has no low range gearbox and the 1.5 diesel does not have enough torque to crawl up the hill. Ive ridden one and for un paved roads these are more than ok, but please dont consider them proper 4x4’s
You didn't drive it enough, that's for sure. They are proper off-roads. TH-cam is full of Duster owners who go off-roading on a daily basis. I have one too. Its great. I'm not going rock-climbing or off-roading like you see in TV shows but you can literally go anywhere you need to go with it.
We drove a nearly new rental one for 3500 odd kilometer through Namibia. And like you stated it was perfect for off-road gravel roads and light trails. But the lack of torque and a low range gearbox meant we had to take a taxi (3.0 Nissan patrol safari truck) to cross a patch of loose desert sand with rocks and dunes. Its a perfect real world 4x4, but not the one I would choose to go overlanding.
Aici nu este vorba de masina! E vb de anvelope , nu vorbim de marci ci mai exact de profilul lor, se vede ca Land Roverul are profilul tip bradut, ei alea sunt bune daca circuli in oras nu off-road! Bro.I own 3 freelanders.With proper offroading tires the freelander would get up that anytime.Plus the drivers were total amteurs. 1.YOU DONT FUCKING REV LIKE HELL AND SPIN THE TIRES YOU GO SLOW. 2.The duster has OFFROAD TIRES AND IT WAS EASILY SAW 3.The freelander had road fucking tires.
