What a wonderful video. The baseball swing is very helpful the only problem that I have is that was standing straight up when we do the baseball swing when we bend over from the hips it becomes a totally different action I’m sure in some previous videos which I have not had the opportunity to look at yet you did to take away if there’s not one there may you think about doing one and if it is can you link me to it thank you

Imagine sliding the club along a table top, when doing the baseball swing. Now, just start that same swing with the club at waist high, instead of chest high. The tabletop is now slightly tilted. Then, work it down to around knee height, keeping the vision of the table being tilted, and sliding the club along it. Then, address the ball, and repeat. Hopefully doing it in small increments, it will start to make sense. Good luck!

    Hello,
Thank you for responding to my prior question- just a clarification on the takeaway. A common drill for the connected takeaway is placing the shaft in the abdomen and rotating back with little use of the arms or hands. After first parallel, the forearms appear to rotate to go to the top, but not before. Are you suggesting that the forearms should begin to rotate at the very initiation of the takeaway? Many thanks!

+Leonard Dzubow Hi Leonard, there should be some forearm rotation in the takeaway to first parallel to allow the trail elbow to fold slightly towards the trail hip. If no forearm rotation it will create more width but for me to much separation of the arms to the body and more tension.
I firmly believe with the correct grip and pressure, if you focus on the bigger muscles, i.e. Chest turning on a tilted plane the arms will take care of themselves.
In saying all this I would always base what is too much or too little around the ball flight that the golfer is hitting.
I hope this makes some sense? Regards, Jon

Is the wrist flex at the top due to digging in the right elbow

To create wrist Cock the trail elbow will bend yes. I would like to see if happen gradually rather than digging in.

Wouldn't shallowing the club make the downswing under plane and the club head too deep and far behind you at the top?

I take it you don’t mean behind you at the top? I would like to see the club shallow in the transition but as you rotate the club will move in front of you. However this video isn’t really about this!?

There's a lot of reasons for slicing the golf ball. early extension, out to in swing path, weak grip, angle of attack, telling someone to just rotate their forearms a bit more in the downswing is just a quick fix that will cause other problems.
Why not just teach the most efficient way to swing the club that is repeatable and on the correct plain.
Yes it takes time but it's better than a quick fix that lasts a few rounds.

+lee mcshane Hi Lee, did you watch the video? It's not a fix your slice by rotating your forearms video. All is suggested at the end was that if the clubface was open at impact, more rotation would be needed. The face has to be open to the target and path to cause a slice (unless a heel strike) I would only make a technical change to alter the ball flight not to look more textbook.
The video was answering a question on how much forearm rotation there should be in different areas of the swing and what controls.

I have never understood why the baseball swing is considered useful in golf swing instruction. Go and have a good look at some videos. You'll see lots of flying elbows for starters, the aim is to hit up on the baseball and of course the baseball bat, being round, does not need to be squared at impact. A golf club shaft is round but is absolutely useless for hitting a golf ball straight or into the air (just ask anyone who hits off the hosel). Don't get me wrong I appreciate and enjoy your videos but please no more baseball comparisons. Happy to be contradicted. I'm across the line at the top and shank a lot. I know you've mentioned this elsewhere but any chance you could explain in a bit more detail why being across the line has a tendency to lead to shanks. Ta.

As someone who played baseball A LOT as a kid and was quite proficient, I agree. Especially in regards to forearm rotation in golf. At golf your hands are neutral at impact so that you square the club. In baseball you are "palm up palm down", which would create a massive massive slice(which is what I am trying to deal with right now). As a baseball player golf is very counter intuitive. Baseball habits have led me to have too much head movement, too much body movement in my backswing, lack of forearm rotation in my downswing, my trail arm at the peak of my back swing facing forward with my elbow out, my hips not clearing before impact, the list goes on and on. I basically, in an effort to try and learn the game of golf, am having to go against all of my instinct on how to strike a ball.

So how does a trick shot artist hit a driver off the very high tees at baseball height, does he have a totally different swing compared to normal tee height?

My humble opinion. Anytime a pro says anything about how it should be natural. It tells me they aren't a good teacher. For 95% of people nothing in the golf swing is natural otherwise everyone would start off hitting it straight rather than slicing. The grip, wrist and forearms are 80% of the problems with slicing and he's telling you to do a baseball swing and it should be "natural". Really frustrating if I was hitting it straight "naturally", I would NOT be here! lol

From the good teachers I've seen while trying to correct this swing fault of mine they say you should try to avoid early forearm rotation in the backswing. When you over rotate forearms at the beginning of the backswing you'll get the club stuck behind you and will lead to the over the top move and a slice. Good luck.
