Atomic fear was real during the Cold War, and Godzilla himself was created to represent that fear. There might've even been conspiracy theorists back in '54, who thought the commies were breeding giant monsters in some secret Nuclear Lab. 😅 Good times.
Cool detail, they didnt make up this nuclear test. Its based on an actual French nuclear test conducted in 1966 on the french polynesian atoll of Moruroa, which you can see named on a sign as Atoll De Moruroa at 0:23.
@@zackarysullivan9019 it was only 3 tests, they were underground, so less dangerous, and the point was to gather enough data to perform the next ones by computer simulation. But yeah, still not great.
It would have been forgotten, that would have been great but it wouldn't have had such an impact and to this day people wouldn't have been exposed to the Godzilla franchise
Except this isn’t a creature that has been in the state of hibernation for 100 Million years Ago. It was a once ordinary Lizard that has been changed by the blast of a nuclear radiation.
Underrated, in my opinion. This is my 2nd favorite Godzilla movie, but I don't think it's bad as people say. Sure, it has many flaws, but it has this certain charm to it that I like.
Honestly, had this been a Japanese/French story this could’ve been a really great movie. Setting it in New York City(Atlantic Coast…) and using the American Military really did the concept dirty. However as mentioned I feel like there is a really great story underneath, Jean Reno and his team of French Intelligence tracking the monster and trying to cover up that it was indeed France which was responsible for this modern incarnation of Godzilla is such an awesome lil sidestory it is such a shame it wasn’t in a real Toho Godzilla project.
I just now realized that this ship that Godzilla sank was not the first on his list, like from the reaction of that Japanese who, upon seeing an unknown object on the sonar, immediately gave the command to abandon ship.
It would be awesome if they showed legendary godzilla getting hit by that bomb, and it would make sense for the monster verse since zilla and godzilla were both hit by that bomb.
It really isn't....gojira and g98 have a similar message but godzilla here doesn't present said message correctly. Gojira was anti nuclear and wanted to display godzilla as a walking bomb, leaving destruction in his wake that was akin to a literal nuke. G98 here left less destruction and most of it was done by the military. If g98 was aiming for the same message as gojira then it needed to have the "god" in it's own godzilla to do so. Don't have godzilla be a force of nature or a walking nuke and he doesn't leave destruction equivalent to either disaster
@@Kaiju-bm4ts This movie goes off the rails very early on and becomes just a typical Hollywood monster flick, but this opening really does a good job adapting the original Japanese concept to American audiences. 1954 Godzilla represented Atomic power and destruction that mankind couldn't stop - at least not without creating an equal power and destruction in the form of the oxygen destroyer. In the American version, it's our hubris and recklessness that creates Godzilla, which then comes back as punishment for our meddling with Atomic power. Or at least that was what the opening is going for. And then it becomes a Roland Emmerich movie... Edit: I know it was the French, but Americans did testing there too - and the movie only features the French to introduce Jean Reno. As I said, it becomes a Roland Emmerich film :/
No. It really does not. The message of 1954 is almost completely lost midway in the movie once they revealed Godzilla to be a weak and scared animal running away for it's life, while the military are the ones accidentally causing the most damage. Godzilla is meant to be represented as a metaphor for the H-Bomb. He's a nuclear explosion in slow motion. Yet in this movie, he barely destroys things. The first half of the movie where he is causing death and destruction is good, they should have done more of that.

The nuclear tests carried out by the French in the Pacific cause the appearance in the ocean of a gigantic mutant reptile, which has been located after attacking a Japanese fishing boat; now it will leave the ocean to go to New York.
Although an epic opening it would have been nice to have Toho on board to make it more closer to what the Japanese would have envisioned of this Godzilla.
