It makes you wonder what they learn at school. Like I’m not blaming the celebs or the public for maybe not knowing exactly what the gilded age was but designers? Who went to art/fashion school? They’re the ones who are supposed to know these things
Gilded age is known for being a thin veil of gold over something extremely shitty and cheap so maybe Kim with the most expensive dress and a pair of pleasers is actually on theme
IMO, The issue with the Kim situation is the fact that she repeatedly bragged that she lost an unhealthy amount of weight in two weeks just to fit in the dress. She talked about her eating restrictions on her Insta to prep for the met. I don’t care she wore the dress, I care more that millions of young people are getting the message that they need to change their bodies to fit into clothes. Clothes are made to fit us, not the other way around!
Then you need to yell at every single woman that does the exact same thing to fit into there wedding dress. It’s a prestige fashion ceremony, that we as watches are literally tuning to toot or boot their looks. What gives us that right. Kim isn’t the problem with the beauty industry, go back to the Egyptian times you can see beauty standards depicted. The Kate miss era everyone had eating disorders, and was bone skinny, kim has a curvy body, regardless of wether is natural or not, the girl does workout. A lot. And earns those abs. Because if we coming for her because of her make up and selfie vanity. She was never the first and she will never be the last. Make up has been around for hundred of years. And takinng pictures and only liking the nice ones was always a thing.
@@stefanboyden7340 these are two different scenarios. women who buy wedding dresses get the dress tailored to fit them. yes, many need to keep in mind how much they gain or lose between then and the wedding so they can still fit in the gown, but no one should be actively losing an unhealthy amount of weight in a short amount of time to fit into a dress that isn’t their size. Does that make sense? Of course the fashion industry is so toxic and it is not Kim’s fault, but she isn’t helping at all. Kim could have worn a designer dress inspired by the Marilyn dress that would be sized and tailored for her. That would be totally acceptable! But to starve yourself to fit into a dress that is not your size and brag about to your impressionable fans is not okay, no matter who you are.
The reason why I can never like the Kardashians is because they never use their huge influence for good. They have chosen to be in the public eye and know that people aspire to look like them and are not honest as to how they have achieved their looks, instead promoting products that will just lead to wasted money and frustration. Girls think this can be achieved naturally in some cases and this will cause unhealthy body image and eating disorders. They should be honest out of a responsibility of being as popular as they are.
@@dustedneonlight I think what we want to be true and the reality are very different, many a people I know have literally bought a dress smaller purposely to challenge to get into it. I’m not saying everyone but I think the number is larger of people wanting to look skinnier on there wedding day then to buy a dress the size they currently are. I think she did good by paying tribute to literally one of the biggest American icons there is, it’s the second time the dress was ever warn. And it’s the most expensive dress in the world. It’s us as the people who take literal to what people say and it’s so pathetic, I’m annoyed at work ‘eurgh I’m gunna kill my boss’ doesn’t mean I’m going to, I skip lunch ‘omg I’m starving’. 16 pounds in 3 weeks is a lot of weight don’t get me wrong, but many of people have done wayyyy higher numbers in shorter times. I lost 5 pounds in 1 week all I did was add half hour cardio everyday and cut out bread. It can be done. Her word choice is poor but more so the people that hang of every single world of anybody who’s a celebrity.
Bob is exactly right. I just know the Kardashians have team meetings where Kris is like “we’re going to wear the most heinous garments and they will eat it up.”
I think the 2022 'Meh Gala' response is more to do with where we are currently in culture. In the UK we have a severe economic crisis affecting most people with the energy bills going up and inflation etc. And maybe seeing wealth and celebrity advertised so brazenly when war envelopes Europe and women possibly losing their autonomy over their body in the USA- the met gala with all it's over the top increasingly branded for money advertisement fashion- just turns people off. If the gilded age was all about prosperity and economic boom and hope- a clear contradiction to the increasing wealth/poverty divide of many countries- evidently the US and UK. And people are not buying into the BS anymore. We are sick of the constant distraction of social media- we are sick of being taken advantage of by big corporations. We are angry.
Since this is the second part of the “In America” anthology, I’m honestly disappointed there isn’t more American designers featured, especially up-and-coming designers who are amazingly talented. I know there’s the issue with just sheer man-power and having the ability to dedicate time and money to making these garments, but uplifting these American designers would honestly be on theme and spotlight great talent.
the problem is the big brands are the ones that pay the 300k for each celebrity to attend the met so no small designers have the opportunity to show their work at the met gala. it’s unfortunate really
@@gucciguccipradaprada5702 it really is. Granted I know there were some American designers (Thom Browne, Tory Burch, Oscar de La Renta is Dominican but had a prominent part of his career in NYC) but you otherwise see the same designers at the Met Gala over and over (Gucci, Prada, Versace). Like you said they can afford to pay the ticket.
Why do we care within what borders a new designer is from? Geography? What difference does it make? Talent is talent. That whole "merica " first can suck it.
@@jesssecrest3719 oh I agree, my being specific with American designers was to keep to some type of theme. Does it really matter at the end of the day, not really. New designers, period, should have a shot at the exposure.
Gaga has wore pleasers for her whole career proudly and always looks stunning, so seeing Kim trying to hide hers because she wants to look that boring in the world's most expensive dress is just very meh.
The whole reason she wore them is to make up for her height difference to Marilyn. They were clear, and the hair was slicked back because Kim was acting as more of a mannequin for the gown. I still don’t think she should’ve worn it, and I had the same thoughts too but in context it makes sense
My biggest issue was that she only wore it to enter and then changed into a replica? If the replica was that well done why the hell did she even wear the original? I guess it doesnt make any difference to them considering people are always gonna hate on/talk about her/her family for something so yknow all press is good press

This is an old ass take but the way it reflects on the evolution of pop culture…of course Marilyn’s popularity was partly owed to scandals, but at least she was a talented actress. Miss Kim, well…”combines all the excitement of smiling with the thrill of…just standing there”

Marilyn's dress is one of the most expensive dresses in the world, but the absolute title goes to The Nightingale of Kuala Lumpur @ $30 million. The materials range from silk, chiffon, taffeta, satin, Swarovski crystals, 751 genuine diamonds, and a 70-carat teardrop diamond taffeta, chiffon and silk.

I was lowkey upset Kim was wearing that dress. That video of them trying to stretch it over her butt made me cringe. There’s so much history in that dress; and here comes spray tanned Kim Kardashian soiling it
As for Emma Stone, I think the reason she's wearing her wedding dress is because of Nicholas, the creative director of Louis Vuitton. As she's wearing a custom LV dress. Nicholas wanted to show his previous creations on this year's met gala, so the whole LV ambassadors in this gala are wearing archive pieces.
PSA: Kim has to wear the massive shoes because sis is tiny, and by regulations the dress is never allowed to touch the floor, be around potential stainers or strong smells. The dress isn’t allowed to be augmented so Kim has to lose weight to fit into it. The dress is basically the necklace from Ocean’s 8. Later on she changed from the dress into a replica because in case you didn’t notice, that dress is a big deal.
So much work to wear something she didnt even look good in. Just because you *can* do something doesn't always mean you should. And then to do all that work with your husband looking totally embarrassing next to you... kinda astounding
She also changed into a replica because Marylin' was too small for her and couldn't sit with it. They didn't even zip it that's why she had to wore something to cover her back /zipper.
If I remember high school US history: The gilded age was the era after the Spanish American war and before the first world war (late 1890s to early 1900s) where there was a lot of civil unrest in America And during this era were richer then ever and the poor stayed that way until the workers stated to strike and protest agents the big men in charge. It was during the guided age that the musical “Newsies” takes place which was based on the real new boy strikes in New York City during this time period. People were starting to look around at the world around them and the man change for the better for the first time. Health codes were introduced during this time for things from meat processing to clothes making, unions we’re started amongst the workers to demand better pay and safety on the respected jobs from their employers, and the minimum working age was raised from around 4 years old to around 16 years old so children could go to school.
Your comments about Eilish are so spot on. She has always come across as lazy and privileged but your point of view helped me understand WHY. And I think you are right.
It’s crazy because the Met Gala on Twitter had such a weird reaction. It was mixed with people hating the celebs for not being on theme and for the looks being shit but those same people hating the Met Gala itself for being an incredibly capitalist event that is essentially laughing in the face of all people in America and around the world who are struggling to survive (which is kinda the main message of the Gilded Ages). So maybe every single Celeb actually did pass the theme check just by attending.
Marie Antoinette, rococo, isn't gilded era though. There was around decade between the two eras. Some qualities are shared but the gilded era was more about bustles, high necklines and big sleeves compared to the wide skirts and extravagent huge hairstyles of rococo.
@@smax333 I see your point. Honestly I don't know if the theme was hard to execute or the brands were lazy to come up with something. Let's pretend we're designers and come up with an outfit
Kim's look was a NO. That dress was custom made for Marilyn, it doesn't make any sense to wear a piece of clothing that was made for another person's body. The point of that dress is to serve the nude illusion and the tone of that nude clearly didn't work on her. On top of that she wears the hideous white fur and a pleaser... NO. The hair also didn't go. If some queen on Drag Race served this I would be like: WORK, but to see this on the woman with more resources on the planet to pull a look together.. NO. It's not about wearing a historic piece, it's about looking good.

@@Gloomcookie96 thank you, this was what I was trying to say but you worded this better than I ever could lol
Bob is exactly right. I just know the Kardashians have team meetings where Kris
is like “we’re going to wear the most heinous garments and they will eat it up.”
Right?!? Where is the irony in any of these looks? It should have had commentary, it should have been brainier, campier. Such boring off theme looks 😴

Like you said they can afford to pay the ticket.
it's almost as if all this high fashion celeb rich famous people shit is all bs and doesn't fucking matter at all
Why do we care within what borders a new designer is from?
Helen Mirren also loves wearing them on the red carpet
Kim was stomping all over that dress in them pleasers too
The whole reason she wore them is to make up for her height difference to Marilyn. They were clear, and the hair was slicked back because Kim was acting as more of a mannequin for the gown. I still don’t think she should’ve worn it, and I had the same thoughts too but in context it makes sense
I think she needed to be that tall so she didn’t drag a priceless dress on the ground
My biggest issue was that she only wore it to enter and then changed into a replica? If the replica was that well done why the hell did she even wear the original? I guess it doesnt make any difference to them considering people are always gonna hate on/talk about her/her family for something so yknow all press is good press

Correct, but that’s like comparing a wagyu steak to a microwaved hamburger covered in heaps of edible gold.
NGL I looked up the dress (the nightingale) and it's ugly af lmao, all those rushes looks like enlarged prolapses
Yes but the reason Marilyn's dress sold for so much money is because it was a dress made for her and only worn by her. Not because of what it was made out of.

Also the dress didn’t stretch due to its being sequined.
She also changed into a replica because Marylin' was too small for her and couldn't sit with it. They didn't even zip it that's why she had to wore something to cover her back /zipper.
Why didn't she wear an expensive replica the whole time? Or a remixed version? It feels odd...
That's so janky, that doesn't seem like it would feel glamorous walking around unzipped
And I think you are right.
she just seems like a payola princess
It’s crazy because the Met Gala on Twitter had such a weird reaction. It was mixed with people hating the celebs for not being on theme and for the looks being shit but those same people hating the Met Gala itself for being an incredibly capitalist event that is essentially laughing in the face of all people in America and around the world who are struggling to survive (which is kinda the main message of the Gilded Ages). So maybe every single Celeb actually did pass the theme check just by attending.
Ladies and gentlemen welcome to the stage, Ms Vivienne WestWorld 💀
So I've heard that a lot of people went with magenta because that dye became really popular in the guilded age!!
If Symone was invited back, her black and white Marie Antoinette grand finale dress would easily eat up everyone there.😌
Or her white gown statement piece
