You GOTTA do Tyler the Creator - That Guy! I’d also love to see your reaction to Tantrum by Will Smith and Joyner Lucas. Thank you as always for the 🔥 reactions!
I would love you to react to the Snotty Nose Rez Kids. They're an indigenous rap duo from British Columbia. They have a new album out this year called "Red Future." The song BBE is fun and has a cool video. Thanks for all you do!!
She has 3K's vibe, Missy's swag, Lauryn's lyrical creativity, Moni Love's flow. Reminds me of a bunch of 90s artists swirled together. Love her so much!
I was kinda getting a KRS 1 vibe and flow mixed with kendricks ad libs and emphasis and storytelling of both. In the first few songs. Maybe it was that beat that was KRS. But whatever it was, she got in her bag. Honestly, I wasn't expecting that. You're on point with the Missy comparison as well. Maybe even Kim with the aggressive cadencing. Each song had a lil something in it.
“Top 100, what it is” She did in fact drop a track called “what it is” that peaked at 29 on the billboard That was most peoples introductions to doechii and I would’ve never imagined she could rap from the song
Most ppl didn’t know that was her. I just discovered the video and most ppl was surprised that it was her. We all heard it and it was hot but didn’t know it was her
It's crazy that she made a big Pop hit and decided to transition to Rap. Rap is way less successful and profitable compared to Pop and generally what happens is Artists start in Rap, get famous, and then transition to Pop. She's choosing an uphill battle by going from Pop to Rap which is unheard of. Shows just how confident she must be in her ability to be a successful Rapper.
@ she’s always been a rapper I think she explained it in “denial is a river” but I guess her label was pressuring her to transition or to prove her worth or something So she casually drops one of 2023’s biggest hit song just so her label can see her worth
I first saw Doechii performing "Denial is a River" / "Boiled Peanuts" on Stephen Colbert's late night show and was absolutely blown away. A few days later, I watched an interview with her where she said that she had excused her choreographer for that performance because she just felt the movements that corresponded with the music within herself. When asked how long it took her to choreograph, she said about 4 days. If anyone reading this comment has not seen that performance, go watch it now. You will not be disappointed. This young lady has the kind of talent that is not only rare, but absolutely captivating.
@McKennaMorrison Yesss, girl...and u know, I didn't even notice the hair until the second time I watched it. 🤦♀️ It is an absolutely incredible performance!
TDE got a jewel in Doechii and give it up for that BAND!! Doechii is HER! She preformed at Kendrick Lamar's Christmas in Compton and stayed around on that stage until the end like she was a fan. Me seeing that, made me like her even more. It shows how supportive she is to everyone in that label and that she is truly a fan of her fellow TDE posse. 🌟🌟🌟
1:41 "I think I'm in love!" I swear on EVERYTHING I had the EXACT SAME REACTION the first time I watched her Colbert performance. Like, I think hearts actually fluttered out of my eye 😍 sockets on some Bugs Bunny cartoon shit! 😂
Also I wanna shout out NPR’s editing in this one. After watching this thing like 17 times I just noticed how they do such a good job with their framing, who they highlight and when, the subtle zooming in and out showing so many wonderful people in their element.
‘i think im in love’ legit i sat watching my screen MESMERIZED on REPEAT for DAYS. she is ungodly beautiful but it also goes into her creativeness is just so unbelievably attractive and new
I love her. I first heard her feature on Tyler's album and then went back and listened to everything. She is special and probably the future of female rap
Oh, she switched that line from "might get Cole to rap on this Ish" to kendrick 😂, I know that's right. She can definitely do a Broadway performance called "alligator bites", and it'll be a hit.
@@lichtdoosYes! This reminds me of how I felt when I went to my first Jill Scott show. She is relatable and funny, like Jill when she’s in her spoken word bag. While I can hear the different artists that have influenced her, she’s telling her own unique story, so it’s still new and interesting.
Like a lot of music, my husband showed me Doechii, specifically with this concert. I came into the living room to him enjoying this, and it was such a vibe, when I turned to him, he said " I ve been watching this with wide eyes, like wow what.is.this?" Then the electro guitar kicked in ❤ ( Im a bit of a metalhead) She is such a talent.
03:18 -- "Get Top on the phone" is also a reference to Kendrick's 'Untitled 02'. 27:20 -- the directions remind me of Kendrick's 'The Art of Peer Pressure' when he describes how they evade the police.
The heartbreaking piano and whimsical chimes simultaneously after “I could be anything” 40:01 are what make it feel so impactful for me, it makes me take a deep breath and feel so many complicated emotions with just a few seconds of those two instruments.
In Boiled Peanuts when she makes the Tiger King line, there's even more depth to it because she's from the 813 - Tampa, which is where Big Cat Rescue (Carole Baskin, if you watched Tiger King you know) is located!
14:00 that "breathing exercise" sounds real reminiscent to The Fat Boys. I feel like she pays a lot of homage to old school thru this thing so far, as well as showing some range as, not only an artist, but a female artist.
I'm finding doechii just now and damn I am OBSESSED. This woman has soul, she bas brains, she has culture and dignity 🙏🙏🙏🙏❤️ we need people like her in music

Loved the reaction! You really analyze the lyrics and presentation its great! That breakdown in the midpoint was definitely an homage to the Black Church when she says “praise break” Thats the music they play in church when they “get happy” 😂
My first exposure to Doechii was a Tumblr post of the Nissan Altima performance from the Tiny Desk Concert. Genuinely incredible breath control and performance skills. Also: I just genuinely love how everyone in the band is clearly having a great time throughout this whole performance.
I would be shocked if she doesn't end up being a star. So much talent and personality and presence. Whole ensemble cooked in this performance, one of my favorite Tiny Desks ever tbh
I would love to mention that this performance is so different from the studio versions of the songs that it was genuinely such a whiplash (in a good way).
Literally just discovered her music last night - I love that it leans into spoken word, but when she starts rapping her rhyme schemes are excellent too
I watched her Tiny desk concert yesterday and I was scouring your channel to see if you’d reacted to it yet - what perfect timing! I love her vibe and her music - I’m new to rap and hiphop as genres but she’s a great introduction!
Oh doechii has been one of my faves for awhile now. Ive been watching her come up since she was in highschool rapping on youtube from her room. So glad you got to her. I would love to see you do a side by side of any one of these songs and the studio/music videos. There's an interview with her by the dissect podcast where she goes over every bar of her Alligator Bites Never Heal mixtape and breaks it all down. Her song "bullfrog" has a 7-entendre bar. She writes and helps produce all her own stuff. She's incredible.
I have never watched you before but your commentary is so respectful and like seasoned. You “see” her and the music. This woman is a gem and talented beyond imagination. Powerful, raw talent. Sheesh!
So, the darker the person, the darker the vagina. I think it was also just about her being a proud dark skinned black woman. Cause when you hear about vaginas, it’s almost always about a “pink vagina”. But the fact is millions of us have brown, or black vulvas. I’m dark, and my vagina is very dark. Not purple dark but not pink. And I felt SO INSECURE about that as a young adult.
She’s so smooth and she reminds me of old school ladies like Salt and Peppa and Lady of Rage. I love the confidence, honesty and damn she can spit. I love that she’s less shallow than most popular female rappers just speaking on their bodies and sex. Im loving the variety of music of the rock music and jazz.
@knoxhill The Ego Trip bar also is a reference to the recently departed Nikki Giovanni's poem "Ego Tripping." It's a common trope and reference to that poem that 90's rap group Digable Planets and De La Soul also reference in their songs.
And doechii from the city. Tampa baby. I'm glade when she started popping she came back to the city and did a small set at the crowbar in ybor. I used to do beat battles there

She’s got that 90’s style of rapping. A lot of humour in her style. I like it! 😎😎 Great work breaking down her songs Knox Hill. Just as entertaining as the performance itself. 😎
So lovely to be introduced to a female rapper and singer, and one whose musicality oozes from her soul. I hear a lot of musical influences from the world of rap & hip-hop, but not confined to that either. Personally, I’m reminded a little of Janelle Monae, and in places of the super NYC band ESG with that soul-jazz-funk vibe, especially when she gets a bit more experimental with her rhythms. I’m also reminded of Peaches from the early naughties - remember The Teaches of Peaches? Not all the way through or nowt, just flashes of her during the first half of this set. And as another commentor said, there’s a strong modern musical theatre element here too. I hear 90s Beck, and most of all I hear the jazz arrangements and the storytelling of 90s band Cake. There’s the chill-vibes of Morcheeba too. This is all subjective, I have no idea who she grew up listening to. Being from the UK, let me be another one to encourage you to react to Nigerian-North Londoner Little Simz. Gorilla is my favourite for its nod to 90’s rap & hip-hop. Nice work Knox, as always. ❤
I just kept thinking that Ren would love this little concert. Her use of rap with horns and her rhythmic comedic breathing is fire! Not to mention her flow and versatility. I only found her this morning so I'm behind!
She has amazing character and stage presence. She's fierce. Not afraid of get aggressive. I like that in female artists. I have a cousin who is a female musician and she kinda carries herself in the same way. If I could have half the talent she has.
Discovered her a week ago. The album is amazing. Its hip hop, its raw, its fun. She didn't just made the songs, she directed it like Kendrick does. She doesn't just rap rap her verses, she uses sound, pauses, timing, tone, melodies, rythms, voice and many other things to direct listener's ears and minds to the main things she tryna deliver.
Doechii! Yo Knox Hill shout out to you! Thank you for what you doing.. new subscriber this year! Amazing breakdowns and love the way you really dissect these lyrics for us! Hope you keep doing this for years and years. Big love from Sweden ❤🇸🇪

So excited to see you reacting to Doechii! She was on my most played artists this year, her music is phenomenal!
You made me smile. Thanks Knox!
YES! I'm glad you're doing this.
I've been listening to Doechii's tiny desk since it came out.
Her first hit #1 was the song “What It Is” where she was introduced to us as a “singer”
Finally the reactors are catching up and doing the Doechii tiny desk, such a good proving ground and she cleared it like it was nothing

Ahhh so glad you checked this out! I truly was thinking, damn Knox would appreciate this a lot I hope he reacts 😂 dopest tiny desk I’ve seen a long time, and her band was absolutely legendary
Doechii is the female GOAT 🐐
she never misses and she’s just getting started, imagine the music she’ll be pumping out in a few years time!
It's always a good performance when you have good chemistry with yr band and singers, or whoever is backing you up as a great front man.
wow knox that busta rhyme reference was spot on. she’s like nicki, kendrick, busta all put together🔥🔥
I have been hoping and praying you would react to Doechii!! I KNEW you would love her! I think she has become my favorite female rapper after this mixtape!
Thanks!
I've only known about Doechii for about 2 weeks now. Right there with you man! She's 🔥 🔥 🔥
Yeah I found her through Tiny Desk (like how I found a lot of amazing artists,) and now I'm obsessed!!
Lauryn Hill and Kendrick had a baby i see.
16:17 yes! Definitely Bustah! "Wooahh got you all in check!"
She's the moment. Love your reactions and insights about the lyrics, it's always nice since english is not my first language so many times I'm not able to catch everything.
Flinging that Kendrick keyword like if there was no tomorrow!
I’m happy you found doechii, I’ve been following her since I was in middle school and she really is that girl. I saw her live twice and she has such an amazing presence and authenticity to her. If you haven’t listened to Aligator Bites Never Heal highly recommend it!
best tiny desk ever.... she's the whole package
