The dead bodies they pilot don’t last forever, and when they start to rot, bloat and break down the flood multiplies inside the body and waits for a chance to disperse the Infection forms inside. The flood used grunts as just biomass to build things.
Shame Sniper Rifles are completely worthless against the Flood, so those snipers up top are just dead weight. Though they would be absolutely shredding if it was vs Covenant; I've seen Sniper Marines routinely snipe out the weak point on Hunters from across the map. Might take a few shots, but marines don't have to worry about ammo.

Imo the reason halo 1 marines performed so much better was primarily because they don't charge in as much. Halo 2 marines charge forward by far more than the others and either dont have a melee or sparingly use it, so the flood just chewed them up(plus losing men to explosives is bad) While halo 3 marines also tended to push up a bit more, they actually put their melees to great use, buying them extra time. Reach marines struggle against flood, possibly because the devs didnt design them with fighting against flood in mind? And halo 1 marines tend to walk quickly and randomly in different directions while fighting, possibly helping them disperse and avoid melee swings better. Also the fact that one of them was holding a warthog turret might have helped.

All these guys get cross-training with commissars from Dawn of War? They certainly don't hesitate to blow the head off of anybody the split second an infection form jumps on them. No human attachment holds them back.
