  • Aunty Connie Hart, from Lake Condah Mission, was the ‘naughty girl’ who helped preserve traditional basket weaving. When she was a little girl living on an Aboriginal mission, practising traditional culture was forbidden. Connie sneakily learnt the traditional art of basket weaving from her elders, and later passed it on to her niece, Aunty Eileen Alberts, despite living under the threat that the children in the family would be taken away if they were ever caught. Now, Eileen and her daughters openly practise traditional weaving, and pass on the craft to anyone - Indigenous or non-Indigenous, who would like to learn.
