The majority of industry professionals and people inside the business are going to punish and critique you for not using the expensive-pro equipment, videos like this make me happy because they normalize not having hundreds of dollars to spend in expensive equipment, what counts is your ability to use your tools at hand! Great content
always loved those videos with professionals with budget equipment and amateurs with pro-grade equipment, to highlight best practices and techniques rather than relying too much in the gear
I'd like videos talking about: On-set Playback, Recording in high- noise environments, tips working in extreme temperatures, Lavs for very wet environments (surfing, swimming, scuba diving), and protecting your Lavs in fight choreography.
Sound 101 idea: A video on how to connect Deity connect timecode kit to Deity connect deluxe kit and have 4 body mics connected to one receiver. I actually went on the website and couldn't find anything to help. Hope to see a video for that. Will also contact customer service for help. Thank you
Great video as usual. I suggest the following videos, Firstly, Tips for Houses of Worship, "mic-ing" up pastors, or participants in a play -Christmas / Easter Show etc. bearing in mine that their spaces usually have less in terms of sound treatment. Secondly, microphones for teachers, the V-LAV ,Deity VO-7U and the Deity Pocket Wireless come to mind. Blended classrooms are now common place and teachers need to have good audio for the tutorial videos they make or for the videos they record in their classes for students who may be absent and since sound is at least 50% of a good video, it cannot be overlooked. Bonus idea, how to capture audio for a basketball, baseball other game at school where students are the commentators and we include sounds from the court and players for live broadcast. This could help for schools with Media Programs and clubs.
Here is an idea for a future episode. Top 10 or top 5 most creative sound tips you learned from other technicians. The spirit of this idea is that sound guys are usually alone and have to figure things out on their own. So when they meet you will hear creative solutions to problems. For example. My boom pole is held up by a mono pod. It was so cool to hear about your painters pole solution on one of your episodes later.
Using the BP-TRX to send over a dual mono audio (left - timecode, right - music) for music videos or choreography. BP-TRX 01 - Master TX - input: iPad showing a video with timecode and left-timecode right-music audio BP-TRX 02 - Camera HOP to Timecode Slate BP-TRX 03 - Camera HOP to Camera A - Camera with Timecode input with automatic timecode jamming (Blackmagic Pocket or URSA) BP-TRX 04 - Camera HOP to Camera B - Camera with no Timecode (Sony a7) - will use LTC that can be used in post BP-TRX 05 - Speaker - output to a TRS to TR/TS, so only the music will be played in the speaker I did something similar to this (scaled down) using the BP-TRX Deluxe kit. Everything synced perfectly in post!
I'd love to see an episode on how to record loud motorsports audio such as engines both on board and drive by. It's really hard to get good audio that transmits how powerful a machine is without coming off as too loud.
Love the content! It would be awesome to hear from pro’s - why you would use a shotgun vs a lav. Is it important to always have both and which mic gets more use in the final mix. I honestly hate the way lavs sound, but maybe I’m doing something wrong in the final mix?
I find that more and more productions are using lavs in their final edit, whether it's events, documentary, commercial or narrative. I've learned that the lav that you use makes the difference, like a DPA 6060 or in that tier have a great sound and very usable in a mix. People are getting more and more used to that "clean" and dry sound from a lav, but it always differ from production to production. I agree with you, I really want to hear from industry pros on this subject.
Tip for great idea Will be a video of how to set "comtek like" audio feed to clients and producer only using smartphones ( trought some free app they can download) .. You can Even make a comunication system using somethink like the f8 or mixpre series .. i Will love to se that video an Will be súper original .. cheers from Paraguay 🍻
Between Andrew and Curtis Judd, I've learnt so much about getting better sound, but it takes a bit of time to go through it all. As a trainer that needs to run hybrid classes now, a sound 101 about live capture for use during a class/training session might be a good idea. I do remember Andrew making a streaming video with an HD-TX at one point and Ted from Indie doing the v.lav set, but not much for the needs of live classes.
Make a video about DIY and/or unique ways to establish 2-way communication with your boom op on set. I had 2 sets of G4 rx & tx that I paired then rigged with velcro straps, earbuds and mic. It was ugly, but worked amazingly.
How about making a video demonstrating the versatility of using a single mic in many different scenarios? Let's say like using the D3 for an interview setup, narrative work, run n gun doc style, streaming setup etc.
This was cool to see ingenuity used on the cheap. I'd love to hear how to get audio from, say a mixing board or audio recorder to multiple cameras on the cheap. ie. 1x transmitter to multiple receivers
Loved this! It’d be awesome if you made a video about rigging for live sound. We use a lav every week for a speaker, and the clip and cable situation is trash. Ideas?
Okay I got an idea for you this is one I have done.. You can buy plastic sheets or balls you can melt. I have used it to mold round a lav as like a minimount . Give it a try see what ya think.
All these other comments are nice, but Andrew is a pro at them already. I think we want to Challenge Andrew and I think I have just the perfect idea. Please show us how to put a lav mic on a fish for underwater scenes.
How about tips for field recording and putting together a personal sound library for Sound Design & Post? Alternatively, (for the likes of music video shoots) working with timecoded playback on set?
Sound 101 idea: How to start creating your own sound effects library. From the recording to organization management! Thanks for all the videos, really interesting!
I’d like to see a professional with cheap gear vs amateur with professional gear. It would be a great way to show off various deity products and the value of learning the craft by watching your TH-cam channel.
I'm planning shooting a short film that takes place in a car for most of the film and I would be interested in some of your ideas on where to place some mics and maybe some technics when recording sound in a moving car. Thanks!
Sound 101 idea: (two ideas) a selection of accessories to print in 3d for sound engineers// how to choose the best position for boom operator in different types of scenes.
Awesome, can you do duck tape on an island oh wait mythbusters did that. I think a few more of these would be good. Maybe not not on purpose after all.
Sound 101 Ideas: Make a Dollar Store Boom Pole Audio Lingo / how to communicate with other departments When to get Room Tone No Slate? What else could be done/used? Don’t Cross the streams!! Don’t lay Audio Lines on or around Power Lines. How to prevent/ work around it.
I have a D3 mic and I have tried an extension cord to get the mic closer to me but the extended cord creates a hum what can I do? Or what cord should I buy or do you have a longer cord for this?
Multi-tier answer incoming: 1) could be your 3.5mm extension cable is getting close to a 120/240V power cord, or close to an AC to DC power supply. 2) Could be the shielding on the extension cable isn't very good. We recommend +90% shielded cables, and cables that are double shielded for durability. 3) Could be that your cable is coiled and creating a magnetic field that is picking up RF static in the air. Seen this with intercom XLR cables that accidentally will turn into passive radio and pickup radio frequencies. We uncoiled our neat cable management piles into a spaghetti mess and it preventing it from creating a magnetic field.
Something I would like to know one day is what happens if the sound guy for gets the boom rod I was working on a short film with a new guy one time asked him to bring a boom rod but he forgot it luckily I brought my but what would of happened if we didn’t have one

I would like to see how you link up all those extra Lav Mics to Timecode units.
great tips all around. glad I stumbled upon your videos yesterday. 👍
Thanks for the video. Really helpful.
Glad you liked it
love what you do...very educational and life saving at times!
Thank you for the education you provide us all with the small tips and tricks for those on a budget or like this we are in a tight situation.
I'd like videos talking about: On-set Playback, Recording in high- noise environments, tips working in extreme temperatures, Lavs for very wet environments (surfing, swimming, scuba diving), and protecting your Lavs in fight choreography.
Fight choreography = Boom for reference and plan for ADR.
Sound 101 has turned me into a Diety fan in 2 videos. Excellent work here.
Great video! I would like to see a video of IEM on a budget, how to send signal to a camera and a director. Thanks for all the great content!
Love the videos! Love the contents!
Would love to see a video on how to get more / the most range out of your wireless setup.

I really wondered about those foamies, cool to see them in action.

Loved this! It shows how one can be resourceful with very little!
Waiting for a video to DIY a Battery Distribution System for my bag.
Hi guys, I'd love to see another dollar store sound kit video but for planting lavs in cars/various small spaces!
Here is an idea for a future episode. Top 10 or top 5 most creative sound tips you learned from other technicians. I'm from India and I learned so much things from you
Using the BP-TRX to send over a dual mono audio (left - timecode, right - music) for music videos or choreography.
BP-TRX 01 - Master TX - input: iPad showing a video with timecode and left-timecode right-music audio
BP-TRX 02 - Camera HOP to Timecode Slate
BP-TRX 03 - Camera HOP to Camera A - Camera with Timecode input with automatic timecode jamming (Blackmagic Pocket or URSA)
BP-TRX 04 - Camera HOP to Camera B - Camera with no Timecode (Sony a7) - will use LTC that can be used in post
BP-TRX 05 - Speaker - output to a TRS to TR/TS, so only the music will be played in the speaker
I did something similar to this (scaled down) using the BP-TRX Deluxe kit. Everything synced perfectly in post!

Episode idea. Low cost power distribution for your bag. Mixer, receivers, etc.

Same👍
It would be cool to see a video going over different situations and ways of hiding lavs that aren't on the body. Like in a car, at a table, etc.
I love you landed at Burbank airport which is next to trew audio lol
