I was in high school 1971-1975, and had my first C-rats in the Civil Air Patrol. I spent 1976-1980 in the Airforce, and got to eat C-rats again. From 1980-1986 I was in the Navy my second hitch, and again had C-rats during a couple training days. I didn't eat an MRE until much later, as a civilian IT guy in the late 1990s. 😊
@MeAncient I met a guy who asked me “have you ever had green eggs and ham?” I thought he was being funny until he told me that his dad stockpiled C rations when he was a kid. Guy ended up serving during the Cold War, he was a fire control guy. He said he had wanted to be a firefighter, so he was excited until he learned what “fire control” actually meant.
Wait so you were 15 in 1978 and you knew your wife while she was still married to her first husband? What’s the story on that? Tbh it kinda sounds like she dropped her old man for a newer model
My dad was a second generation Ukrainian farmer from northeastern Montana. He went to the army in ‘53 and told me he’d never eaten so well in his whole life! He’d poke a small hole in the c ration canister and heat it up on his half track engine. He’s gone to be with the Lord now but I sure miss that guy! Thanks for everything you did for me dad! Love you!😢❤
Dana, that's a great story. You have an interesting heritage. My grandparents (maternal) came from Holland in the 1910s and spoke broken English at best. My grandfather never entered the military as he was listed as 'farm help' and they needed him more on farms working than in the war. Both of them are with the Lord now and I can't wait to see them again. TFW!
The dehydrated pork patty was one of my favorites. When we opened up a box I'd let it sit for a bit as like you mentioned a lot of folks don't like it. I would reconstitute it, but I did like a bit of crunch so I didn't go all the way. Plus it had cheese, which I always preferred over the peanut butter. And coco powder, which I would add the creamer too and pour in a bit of water, stir, and have chocolate pudding for extra desert. I was a tanker, so we just heated things up on the exhaust grill. Is there an omelet with ham meal in there? That was another one I liked, that most folks didn't. Breakfast of champions!
Man, that dehydrated Pork Patty was the best, and the cookies were good as well! I remember being in the field one Thanksgiving and eating a Ham and Chicken loaf...
I like how excited you are about trying this MRE. It’s like going back to a place you haven’t visited in 40 yrs and going to your favorite restaurant and getting your favorite thing there!
Super interesting seeing those old MREs. The ketchup was interesting for sure. I was 8 years old in 82 and Britain was at war with Argentina over sovereignty of the Falklands. Lest we forget. Semper Fi corporal, keep em coming 🫡🇺🇸🫡🇬🇧😉👍♥️
I was in the USN 80-86. In 1983 my ship was on a deployment, and spent a week tied up in Mombasa, Kenya. The Seamen's Mission there, catering to civilian and Navy sailors, had a big board with many visiting ship's plaques. One was the HMS Sheffield. We all hoisted our beers in memory of those brave British sailors on the Royal Navy ships that were lost.
I remember in the 80's my dads buddy who was a Vietnam veteran would go on fishing trips with us and he was always able to get the older cases of c-rations that we would chow down on. Great memories.
Good day. I joined the CG in 1977 and tried life raft survival foods that were from 64. So they were only 13 years old but nasty. Thank you for always giving thanks to the Lord. Stay safe and God bless. Eastern NC here.

When you said horse meat in the next one, I immediately thought of the old WC Fields film where he was sitting in a diner and said, "I didn't squawk about the Steak dear, I merely said I didn't see that old horse that used to be tethered outside there." LOL That will be an interesting MRE. Have a good one!

I remember Regan said that the military fights on it's stomach. The portions were bigger in the 1980s and 1990s. If I was fighting on the front lines, I could care less about trans-fats, cholesterol, or any other food issues. I would want what tastes good and gives me energy. Let AOC fight on the front lines and see if she still wants to be a vegan and to control portion sizes.
Reconstituting the pork patty with hot water and adding the ketchup and a little salt during the process really helped make that much better to eat. Still of the early MREs Chicken Ala King was my favorite.
I remember that pork patty my uncle used to bring me MREs when i was a kid and for some reason i loved the crunch, but i also dont remember the dried ketchup.

The only MRE I ever ate was in AF basic training in 1989. They took the candy and coffee gum, etc out and left us the main meal so I had chicken ala king peanut butter and crackers and dehydrated pears. Served 20 years did some TDYs but never had to deployed lol. Thanks for all these videos!

Always a kick watching you and hearing your spontaneous comments. The scary-looking apple sauce turned out 'Kinda like homemade apple jelly. It's not bad!' then, dip a cracker, '...'.yep, apple pie''
Well, it was somewhat similar. All things being equal, my wife's cooking is 1,000% better than any MRE. But the purpose of my reviews is in relationship to being in the field and being hungry and having few options. TFW, Buck.
the ketchup was neat. tearing the new packets etc. you need a knife now. i had 2 mres cold weather. 1 Oriental chicken with white rice. that was good.. the 2nd was eggs and bacon plus strawberry oatmeal outstanding. great video
The heat tabs were really nice! We always carried and old tuna can in our pack to use as a base for the canteen cup. I think i liked all of the MRE's. We had so many hacks to make things different, add peanut butter to beef stew, etc. Also, the sleeve on the MRE case made a decent make shift toilet in the field, not the most comfortable but effective. LOL. USMC '88-'92 Semper Fi.
as an Army Cadet (in the eighties) in Canada near the Washington border we would sometimes train with Marine JROTC from Snohomish and they would bring up mre's but we would eat the Canadian IMP's which were significantly better and after the exercise they would give us the MRE's because they didnt want to eat them lol I had the pork patty and tried it. I rehydrated the patty and fried it and it was quite good.
Doug, I would have loved to trade food with other troops from different countries when in Beirut. We had French, Italian, and British. I wonder what their MREs were like back then. TFW
Hi guys, what a great video! I was surprised that the cheese spread wasn't edible. I don't remember the cheese spread being bad in any other MRE, that I can recall. They've been really sharp, but, edible. That pork patty is something that I've never seen. I wonder what it would be like, if you didn't add any water to it? Great to hear about your time in the service. Hope that you'll continue to include more stories, of your time in the Marines. God bless guys, and have a blessed day!
I am nearly out of stories of my own. In most of the other videos on my channel, I tell stories of my time during active duty. Thank you for your kind comments. The cheese actually had some dark spots mixed in unlike any other of that type that I've seen opening all the MREs in the past. It was a little 'off' from most of the other old cheese, which just gets sharper as it ages. That cheese wasn't right, as they say. TFW!
I went to basic in 1992. whenever we were issued MRE's in basic, anything sweet was confiscated by our element leaders (AF version of Squad leaders). One squad leader was recycled (Didn't clean boots after an exercise), another got caught stealing from fellow Airmen. What fun.
Altercations with officers never really turn out well for anyone lol but still happy to see your videos. The first mre I hade was spaghetti and meat sauce it had peanut butter and grape drink with a chocolate chocolate chip, brownie bar best U.S mre eve I ate l granted I was 12 years old and the mre was about the same age lol
My brother in law was active Air Force from the early 70's to the mid 90's. He would bring me a couple of cases of c-rats as they were being replaced by the MRE's. I took the c-rats fishing and camping and loved most of them. Add some fresh fish cooked over a fire and my summer breaks were awesome.
I don't know if a cast iron stomach was a prerequisite to joining the USMC, but I did and continue to have one. It takes a lot of nasty to get my guts rumbling. Hasn't happened yet with an MRE. (fingers crossed) TFW
@@MeAncient i think u and me are blessed the same way sir. i can eat salad washed in the local water in any place we have been, only dairy that is passed seems to have an effect on me, but the nose usually stops this ;) when i think of it i had an 22 year old norwegian mre in my youth. as a dare i ate it and it tasted so good, but they dont make them like they did before the calorie counters came along im sure. the one i had then was from 73, and the most recent one i ate was.. meh. wierd how good taste lasts so long to me. i just found your channel and i must say i do like this format sir. hope you and yours have a lovely weekend, remember to stop occasionally and just take it all in. salute from a retired royal norwegian navy diver.
Incredible looking at those brand new shiny MRE packages when you opened the box. This one has been stored well. I wasn't surprised that any of the vacuum packed items were still good. The freeze dried pork was always good. What I was surprised about was the ketchup or "catsup" as they called it. It was NEVER good. Always turned into a brick. There was another menu that had freeze dried hamburger meat, and there is also a freeze dried potato patty (like a hash brown). And the freeze dried fruit. Those were always good as long as the seal was intact.
@@MeAncient I’m glad you didn’t do that I know how much those stripes mean to you all my uncle was in the Army and you both were in around the same time and I know how proud he was to have earned his rank I guess that proves that not all Marines are hotheads 🤣🤣🤣🤣 thank you Sir for your service and for not taking that swing if you did we wouldn’t be getting these great stories and reviews from you
Daryl, you must watch Ace as well. I believe he named an island not too far from our house, 'Goose Island,' because there were so many geese on it. TFW all our channels.
@@MeAncient yes I do for a couple years now. And I recently watched the goose Island video. Lol I love the fishing and cooking videos! I just found out about your MRE videos I love to watch while I'm eating. keep it up you guys. God bless. 🙏
It's always nice to watch something as simple as 1 little item in an old meal bring back memories of your time back in the day like that pork patty it's really to bad that everything in that meal wasn't good I was hoping it was all going to be good just for the memories. Seams to be a thing tho after all it's what 42 years old I'm surprised any of it is good 😅
Pork patty was definitely my favorite when I was in the Army back in the early 80s. I’d put the water in it then let it sit in my blouse pocket for 20-30 minutes.
Donald, if I would have tried that, I guarantee it would have spilled in my pocket and I'd have been a favorite of the camp dogs until laundry day. TFW
It amazes me how long they last. Mind you, I wouldn't be brave enough to eat them. I've already had a bad stomach with my son buying pizza 🍕 from a not so good takeaway 😂
Many years ago, a neighbor's turkey would come up to our back gate to torment our dog, a big GSD. One fine day, we accidentally left the gate open, the turkey came up to play his game. Our dog nailed him! Thanksgiving dinner came early that year. 😅
In 1965, I was stationed in Arlington, Va. once a month the mess hall would serve expiring C rations. The cans were opened and dumped into a single pot. Different C rats all mixed together. Rumor had it they were 20 years old from WW2. What a disgusting mess. The first guy that went to breakfast spread the word. You found somewhere else to eat that day.
Tom, it was a delight, once again. The beef stew was alright when it was new, but not after 40 years. It tastes too metallic and the flavors have all melded together. It's more like a beef stew smoothie. Stay tuned for the opening of all of these and then I'll rank them, worst to last. TFW!
Might be tropical chocolate on those cookies, more wax and other stuff than chocolate so low/no chance of milk going bad. These look like they were packed very well though which is nice. Cant wait to see more :)
I remember those first generation MREs were very generic. The coffee, sugar, creamer, etc., were all in plain brown packaging. No brand names. I also remember the dehydrated pork patty and the powdered catsup.
The early 80's was a littel bit of a transition. They were transitioning from c ration to MRES and the army was phasing out of the jeeps and into the chevy suburban. My dad was a army military intelligence from 81-84 and spent 6 month over in korea with the second infantry.
That's cool about your father. Did he happen to do any schooling at Corey Field in Pensacola, Fl? That's where I did some of my intelligence training. TFW!
@@MeAncient he was in the rotc program at high-school and at age 17 he enlisted with my grandfather approval. I know he was with the 24th infantry at fort Stewart. Then at one point he had to go to Arizona for something and the army put him and another guy up in hotel where he stayed while in Arizona. Then he went to Korea for 6 month before he got of the army. He was awarded a plaque for his outstanding performance while at for Stewart at the specialists grade.
Also the army somehow got there hands on a Russian tank and my got to learn and actually drive a Russian tank. I also know that whenever he had to go near the dmz zone in korea he had to wear a mp armband and act like a mp so the north korean wouldn't know or suspect he was a military intelligence spying and gathered information on them. Also he was issued along with his regular army uniform a jungle uniform set.
My solders never mixed up the hot coco, they Thure it away. the stake tasted like potted meet. The new MREs have a hot beverage bag because solders said they would rather have a hot drink and eat a cold meal. low fat Manase has more sugar to make it palatable. Sugar subacute can be hazarded to your health and con contain a carcinogen. In Vietnam most did not like was c Rashan ham and lima beans because we got so many of them.
The cocoa you refer to must be from C Rats during the Viet Nam era. I never drank that stuff because I liked other things more and would trade for peanut butter or other items I liked. TFW, Gerald!
The Dehydrated pork Patty was one of the better ones. But who am I to say . I also liked the frankfurters they were sort of between a rodeo hot dog and a Vienna sausage.

Tony, it's going to be fun going thru the entire box and ranking them. TFW!
@@MeAncient yes it will be. still safe to eat? ive been waiting to order a box
Merci pour ce voyage dans le temps, la vidéo passe très vite…..superbe vivement les autres rations ….
Frederic, c'est avec plaisir. C'est amusant de ramener (quelques) souvenirs. TFW !
What fun.
I had C-rats in AF Basic in 1976. 😅
That reminds me of a story from bootcamp!!! I'll have to write it down so I can remember it for a future video. Thanks for that, SSGT! TFW
Ethan, that's a great story. I love it! TFW
That's a great memory, for sure! TFW, Bubba
Hilarious description, you are brave
Some folks have other opinions about brave. But I appreciate your comment. TFW!
u got to have a cast iron stomach sir. impressive suppression skill on this one chaps ! cant imagine this to be digestable, you are a true marine sir.
I don't know if a cast iron stomach was a prerequisite to joining the USMC, but I did and continue to have one. It takes a lot of nasty to get my guts rumbling. Hasn't happened yet with an MRE. (fingers crossed)
TFW
@@MeAncient i think u and me are blessed the same way sir. i can eat salad washed in the local water in any place we have been, only dairy that is passed seems to have an effect on me, but the nose usually stops this ;)
when i think of it i had an 22 year old norwegian mre in my youth. as a dare i ate it and it tasted so good, but they dont make them like they did before the calorie counters came along im sure. the one i had then was from 73, and the most recent one i ate was.. meh.
wierd how good taste lasts so long to me. i just found your channel and i must say i do like this format sir.
hope you and yours have a lovely weekend, remember to stop occasionally and just take it all in.
salute from a retired royal norwegian navy diver.
James, stay tuned! I'm going to have to open each one and then give y'all count down from worst to best. TFW!
awesome as usual
It was a great blast from the past. TFW!
Enjoyed the review as always but now I'm intrigued about that altercation 😂😂😂😂
Decarlo, It's probably a story that will only be known by my family. I nearly hit the brig and lost a stripe........TFW, as always!
@@MeAncient I’m glad you didn’t do that I know how much those stripes mean to you all my uncle was in the Army and you both were in around the same time and I know how proud he was to have earned his rank I guess that proves that not all Marines are hotheads 🤣🤣🤣🤣 thank you Sir for your service and for not taking that swing if you did we wouldn’t be getting these great stories and reviews from you
Now I'm curious if the cookie would have been better with a little applesauce on it 😆
Andrew, I don't think they would have paired well together. TFW
Lmao that damned goose island. Love your videos ace and me ancient!
God bless. 🙏
WOW, a sealed case of brown bags is a sight to see!
It's a beautiful sight to me. That will be a fun one to rank #12 down to #1. TFW, Chris.
It's always nice to watch something as simple as 1 little item in an old meal bring back memories of your time back in the day like that pork patty it's really to bad that everything in that meal wasn't good I was hoping it was all going to be good just for the memories. Seams to be a thing tho after all it's what 42 years old I'm surprised any of it is good 😅
I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by how many items were edible.
I was afraid of that apple sauce.trying that took true courage.true Marine courage.
Or foolishness....I'm not sure. But it really did taste like apple butter. TFW
I'm always happy when Goose arguments are taken elsewhere😅 excellent video. Happy Saturday May the 4th be with you
Indeed! I don't care about their marital strife or fears for today. I trust the 4th was with you as well. TFW!
TFW
Prior to the MRE's we had a lot of dehyds and C-rats. I remember having dehyd hamburgers and pork chops. When cooked well, were pretty good
Bruce, I never saw the dehydrated pork chop. Burger, yes. It's coming in the case. TFW!
I always ate the pork beef and potatoe patty dry when i was out on patrol light weight and handy
Rewatching this one. Try mixing the coffee with the cocoa. I figured that out in Afghanistan in '03.
I was a scout from 82-89. Ate c rats till 84 when i got my first mre
Yep those are the same ones I got when I was active duty Army back in the 80s.
More to come....stay tuned! TFW
We got those MRE's during Desert Storm because that what was loaded on to the MSP ships at that time. I love the beef patty and the pork patty!
I’m with you on that. TFW
My first MRE during my time in basic training (Feb 1984) was the dehydrated pork patty as a breakfast. Next do the dehydrated beef patty.
I'll be doing all of them. That is one of the next ones from that case, for sure. TFW!
I really haven't found an MRE I didn't like in the service. Of course, we all needed food. Now, I have a couple of cases for emergency.
That's the key.....I was always hungry. I had my favorites, and this was one of them. TFW!
👍
Michael, thumbs up back atcha! TFW
It amazes me how long they last. Mind you, I wouldn't be brave enough to eat them. I've already had a bad stomach with my son buying pizza 🍕 from a not so good takeaway 😂
That isn't good. Michael Jordan got a bad pizza delivered to him in Game Five of of the 1997 NBA playoffs. You've probably heard of that. TFW!
Instant coffee dosen't go bad as long as it is not exposed to humidity. The coffee you tasted was just the way it was when packed.
I never drank coffee when I was active duty. I didn't start drinking coffee until I was in my 40s...TFW!
Canadian goose catch and cook
I hear ya......TFW
Many years ago, a neighbor's turkey would come up to our back gate to torment our dog, a big GSD. One fine day, we accidentally left the gate open, the turkey came up to play his game. Our dog nailed him! Thanksgiving dinner came early that year. 😅
Not sure if it would have worked but you could have put the pork pattie in the pouch in the hot water to heat it up.
Pork chops and apple sauce 😊
Интересно и увлекательно )
будьте здоровы )
Я буду, Аарон. Добро пожаловать на борт и TFW!
@@MeAncient 🤝
I would gladly buy a pouch from you.
I'm going to keep all the ones in this new case I bought. I hope to rate them, #12 down to my #1 pick. TFW, Joe
Are we going to see what the other ones look like? Or what you think they taste like
You are going to get to enjoy every last one of them with me, my friend. At least if you stay tuned. I'll rank them when I'm all finished. TFW
My favorite was hash and bbq beef.
Chris, it might be in the case. I'll get to it if it's in there. TFW
And sometimes beans and wiennys.
Pork Patty nah beef stew mmmm lol ya I don't remember ketchup either but wow man 42 yrs.still going cool
Definitely vacuum packed to keep out the bad stuff. TFW
I hated the pork patty. The only way to eat it was to take a bite, them drink some water. The meatballs in BBQ sauce was my favorite MRE entrée.
David, you and I would have been trading,, my friend. TFW!
I was just wondering, what does TFW stand for? Love your videos and stories. Reminds me back when I was in the Royal Artillery.
David,

Thank for letting me know. I should have known what it meant. lol.
I hear you reminisce about the marine core which is interesting, could you go into why you liked it so much?
The older I get, the more I enjoyed it and the better I was...........
Hope that helps to make sense of it. TFW, Nate.
@@MeAncient That does make sense - nicely said
I remember those first generation MREs were very generic. The coffee, sugar, creamer, etc., were all in plain brown packaging. No brand names. I also remember the dehydrated pork patty and the powdered catsup.
Terry, yes indeed. Certainly no brand names and no 'feels like home' food items, as far as familiarity with a brand. TFW!
The old 8 pointed M81 camo pattern Marines utility cover👍
Not my original, but a good one, none the less. TFW, Malcolm.
Have you ever been I'll after one of the MRE tastings?
The Dehydrated pork Patty was one of the better ones. But who am I to say . I also liked the frankfurters they were sort of between a rodeo hot dog and a Vienna sausage.
Alfred, you must have been in about the same time as me. TFW
Me Ancient 1982 MRE still has some life in it. If i remember right in 1967 or so we had the heat tabs or maybe just sterno. OK later and thanks again.
Steve, I remember Sterno and heat tabs as well. But mostly the carburetor on our jeep. TFW, as always.
@@MeAncient Howdy Me. yeah kind of like manifold burritos😁
That mre is as old as me
Chris, don't give too much away. I have a child that age. TFW
@@MeAncient I enjoy eating and trying different mres been eating then since being on a retired military base you might know it camp perry at nationals for three positions long rifle. Thats where i got addicted too trying mres
