For anyone that is as curious as me, I´ll try to do the math on that Homebrewed Circle of Death interaction:
So CoD does 8d6 necrotic to anyone in a 60 feet Radius Sphere(!), but since DnD doesn´t like to deal in circular things we shall call it a 120 foot (since the sphere with a radius of 60 feet has to fit inside it) cube for the initial calculation. No worries though, I´ll come back to this.
Now a 120 foot cube means that there are 120x120x120 ft. or 1,728,000 cubic feet in there. Divided by the number of occupiable spaces aka 5ft. cubes that gives us (120x120x120)/(5x5x5) or 1,728,000/125 for a subtotal of 13824 potential Targets. Now of course Usually a circle of death cast would never hit that many targets, but it is the potential maximum of hittable spaces. And in this case the full Potential energy of this Spell was released in a single 5x5x5 cube, so i will count it as Hollow basically occupying all of those potential spaces at once. (i mean, i am doing this to see a high number, so might as well right?)
Which brings us to the Damage calculation. The average roll on a d6 is 3.5. So lets lowball it a little here and say it´s 3. That means that Hollow takes 13824x8d6 or 13824 x 8 x 3 for a whopping total of 331,776 points of necrotic damage. Which is, of course, insane.
But to bring this back around to a sphere.
The volume of a Sphere is 4/3 x pi x r³ or in this case 4/3 x pi x 60³ so approximately 904,779 ft³ which gives us a much less numerically satisfying 7238.232 potential targets and therefore a damage calculation of a mere 173717.568 points of necrotic damage.
So of course these are extremely high numbers, but hey, that´s what i wanted to see. And of course taking the highest potential number of targets is a bit unrealistic. but then again, realistically you could stuff a whole lot more than one person in a 5 foot cube. So i think it is somewhat justified. Still insane. But justifiedly so.
Tl;dr: Hollow is dead, veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery very dead.
Thanks for reading if you did, and sorry for any semantic or spelling mistakes, english is not my first language.

There is a similar thing in Shadowrun (or was at least, not sure about new versions). Explosions would bounce. Decreasing damage level, but increasing damage each pass. Put a grenade at someone's feet, then put them in a barrier. It would do the same thing here. increasing the damage repeatedly. aka the chunky salsa effect

    • @Mijal15
      @Mijal15 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

To be fair that is assuming the damage total stays constant when focused, when realistically it probably wouldn't. Of course I prefer your numbers. And this is magic shit so for all we know when you focus it like that maybe it isn't additive based on potential targets, maybe it feeds into and magnifies itself making it grow exponentially in damage.
But again, I like your numbers and the Hollow is for sure for sure dead

There are a lot of moments in Calamity that evoked highly specific mental scenes in my head - because Brennan is a madman - and save for the final confrontation with Vespin and the Taxmen, this is my favorite of those moments.
So in my head, Patia steps out, readying the Resilient Sphere, and Hollow appears directly next to her, starting to cast Circle of Death. Patia swivels to throw the sphere out, and Hollow straight up catches her hand as she was pushing out the last somatic component. Hollow says "I always hated you." as Counterspell runes start encircling their hands. A solitary moment of dread before a light hits between them and Zerxus spectral form moves to just crash through the middle of the two mages, forcibly knocking Hollow's counterspell aside as Patia pulls back. Hollow looks up at Zerxus for a moment before meeting Patia's again, and in the same moment both thrust forward with their spells. Then Resilient Sphere and Circle of Death burst out from the point between them in dual waves splashing backwards over Hollow, encircling her first in blue, then in a raging black storm as she screams bloody murder and the flesh is melted off her bones, the scream seeming to last longer than should be possible until the Circle fades and leaves a pitched black skeleton clattering to the ground that in my mind remains behind as a HELLA CURSED ITEM.
Anyone that dares to disturb the bones for even an instant will have that intense excess of Necrotic Energy work its way through their own body, killing them within days and nothing short of a Wish Spell could possibly save them.

so, I did the math, and since it is a sphere and the volume of a sphere is proportional to the cube of the radius, the damage should be 110592d6 (8*(60^3/2.5^3)) you divide by 2.5 instead of 5 because 5 is the diameter, not the radius. If we multiply 110592 by 3.5 we get nearly 387k damage. Dnd doesn't do circles or spheres very well, but that doesn't matter for the math.

Circle of Death targets everything within a 60 ft radius, Resilient Sphere can contain a human-sized creature or smaller (I forget what the exact size category is). While the recursing effect is not strictly RAW, I have to imagine that it is based off of ripple physics - circular force hits circular wall and bounces back, with the visual effect being a raised circle that expands out, hits the wall, contracts again, hits the center, expands out again, etc., until it runs out of energy. Assuming the sphere is a maximum 6 ft in diameter (for ease of math), it seems plausible enough that Lycretia was hit a minimum of 20 times with her own spell (120/6) - if memory serves, more than sufficient to corpsify any of the standard wizard statblocks even if they did make all the saves. EDIT: fixing math.

Weird thing I learned about counterspell recently. According to Jeremy Crawford "Counterspell foils the casting of a spell, not the release of a spell that was cast previously using the Ready action". So you have to see and counter the spell when it is declared and a trigger is chosen, not when the trigger goes off. If you attack a person who is holding a spell though, then they have to make a concentration check if they get hit.

They cannot, but a held spell is considered already cast, so it cannot be countered in the first place, unless it's countered on the turn it is prepared.
      So the scenarios are:
"I hold my spell for when she appears."
      -"Someone counters that."
      "Whelp, that's their reaction burned."
      Or
"I hold my spell for when she appears."

@@filipepereira1204 Also, additional note because otherwise someone will mention it for the sake of completeness: in between casting the spell and releasing the spell, you are considered to be holding concentration just to hold it. So whether you're delaying a concentration spell or not doesn't matter, you can't hold a delayed spell and a different concentration spell. Besides that, you can lose concentration from all the usual damage sources, and if that happens the spell is considered cast and lost with no effect. So there is a tradeoff between being uncounterable and risking losing a spell slot. Most players seem to forget about the uncounterable part. Blaine Simple mentions it in one of his videos (Stuff Everyone Gets Wrong) and explains it in full detail there.

What exactly was Patia's plan here? Lacrytia had Blink going, which allows you to move through the astral plane between turns. Otiluke's Resilient Sphere makes no mention of extending to the astral plane. If she wasn't stupid and didn't try to cast a spell while trapped inside a sphere that's impenetrable to spells, she could have just chilled there for a turn or two and then blink out.
Brennan gave this to Marisha because Lacrytia was gonna die anyway and this was a super cool way to kill her, but it shouldn't have actually worked.

Lacrytia could have (successfully) counterspelled it.
Lacrytia could have had Misty Step or some other way to teleport out (and potentially still use a cantrip on that turn).
And if none of this worked, she's now invulnerable and can safely spend her turn buffing herself up for when she does get out.
God damn Tasha's Hideous Laughter would have worked better to take her out of combat for a while. You can't teleport out, can't buff yourself, _can_ be attacked and unless you have +7 to wisdom saves, the DC for beating it is higher. And it's only a 1st level spell.

@@hellterminator Which would be ideal, *if* Patia had Hideous Laughter in her spell list. As a WIS save, however, a Wizard is much more likely to pass that than a DEX save, and "Por'co's Impenetrable Bubble" is a one and done, compared to Tasha's allowing a save with advantage whenever damaged and a save every turn, in addition to being Concentration. Moreover, Hideous Laughter would not interfere with the effects of Blink, as once the spell is cast it's wholly dependent on the roll of the d20.
Lacrytia could have Misty Stepped away, but that would have brought her counterattack down from a Circle of Death to a cantrip attack, which would have much less devastating consequences. And even buffed, a Wizard outnumbered six to one would not do well, as Lacrytia would be if kept captive for the duration. Marsha stated that her initial goal was to capture Dean Hollow for interrogation, and Resilient Sphere was probably the best option she had at her disposal in that moment. As with so much else in D&D, it's making the best of what you have and hoping the dice fall in your favour.

@@Zombiewithabowtie Unless I missed character sheets being released somewhere, we don't know which spells Patia did or did not have prepared as we've only ever seen her use 11 of the 19 she would have had.
ORS is a dex save on the initial casting (which, by the way, is not harder for a wizard - wis, along with cha is the second most common dump stat for wizards, right after str, because in combat, it's only good for a few spell saves, whereas dex keeps you from getting stabbed and hit), but if you have Blink going, it's effectively a DC 11 straight d20 “save” at the end of each turn.
As explained in my first comment, ORS doesn't interfere with Blink either, so not sure what your point is there.
I specifically said Lacrytia could have used a cantrip after MS, so again, what's your point? Yes, a cantrip isn't much, but it's still more than the nothing she would get with THL.
And to emphasize, I wasn't saying THL would have been *the best* choice in this situation, I was saying that *even* THL, a meager 1st level spell, would have been a better choice than ORS. There's half a dozen control spells that would have been better in this situation than ORS (and indeed also better than THL).
This, combined with Marisha's line that you just cited, makes me think Marisha simply didn't understand how ORS and/or Blink work.
