Fun Fact: Out Run Europa started out as a pitch to Sega as a sequel to Turbo Out Run called "Out Run Europe", which essentially was just Turbo Out Run, but you just drove across Europe instead of the US, Sega declined (Possibly as they were already planning something similar with OutRunners) but they gave them the green light to make a totally seperate game. Also the Spectrum version is impossible to beat legitimately, the game crashes on the second to last level and you need to use to use a level select cheat to finish the game.
I had no idea about these tidbits on Outrun Europa, very interesting. You mention Outrunners, and I can only think about how awesome that game is and just how dismal the Mega Drive port is. Maybe the 32X could have done it properly? I really wish I could play a good version of Outrunners outside of the Arcade.
I used to be Senior Editor for VGA Magazine back in the day and remember getting a beta board of this for testing. I still have it somewhere in storage. I've got some gems in storage from betas to stuff I got from Sam Tramiel at Atari. The golden age of gaming IMO. Keep up the good work SLX, always look forward to your videos. From an old timer of the industry.
Outside of Sonic, SEGA under-represents its huge library of classics more than any other publisher/developer I can think of; and the longer SEGA behaves this way, the more of its audience they lose to “Father Time”. I’m grateful for all the content this channel surfaces, but SEGA’s apathy towards its incredible back-catalog leaves most of us resorting to “piracy” in order to enjoy many of their older titles.
I bought this game in 1992 for the Commodore 64. That version is excellent for the machine (we're talking 1982 technology), fast, smooth, with good graphics and memorable audio by Jeroen Tel. Even withouth knowing the backstory I realised immediately it was a strange Outrun entry but, after all, I was already used to Turbo Outrun being a lot better than the Original Outrun on the C64, so I didn't care a bit. Apparently there are three separately developed variants of Outrun Europa: the C64 one (great), the Amiga/Atari ST ones (a bit off to me), and all the versions running on the Z80 CPU (Spectrum, etc.). Of the last group, the Master System is obviously the best.
One of my childhood games! I played this a lot! It was borrowed by a school colleague! I really liked this game but it was hard! Got to the ferrari but didnt remember if i finished the game or not! One of the best racers on the master system if not the best!
I played this game as a teenager in the 1990s, and I recently bought another copy, since I sold mine some years ago. It's a fun game, I love the concept of travelling through Europe, although many areas look the same across different countries. I agree it's very unforgiving. A key to success is to grab as many ammo/shield/turbo replenishments as possible, but it's hard to predict where they will appear
Probe Entertainment made some fantastic stuff in their prime. I especially loved their port for Bubble Bobble and Rainbow Islands for the Saturn. Acclaim actually had the internal talent to be a genuine big player in gaming. Such a shame their management ensured it could never happen.
I had "Outrun" on my Sega Master System. Played it so much, I have "Splash Wave" burned into my memory. Was a decent port for 1987, but definitely had its shortcomings. I think the thing that bugged me the most was, the car itself never left the center of the screen. Pressing right or left, the screen moved, not the car. But, truly was not complaining, as I would go to my friends houses, and see "rad racer" on thier NES, and scoff. I was the odd one who had a master system instead of an NES. But I found it superior...let the NES try the 1st person perspective of "Phantasy Star"...sorry, went on a tangent there. Great video, as always good sir!
Great video it brings back memories would have been 12 yrs when I had this on the Master System, I used to play this and Chase HQ all the time. It's was so difficult and never completed it but really liked it, not sure if I had ever played original Out Run at the time in the arcade
I had the Amiga version of this back in the day. It had these cool animated cut scenes between each stage. Strange how this never got a Mega Drive port, bearing in mind it had a 16bit version.
Thanks for showing this x, as ive recently gotten acquainted with the sega master system. When you mentioned master of darkness, i had to try it, and its such a great game. That's not bad looking at all. It makes you wonder if this game inspired EA to create Road Rash. I'd like to get your take on the recently released Outrun sit-down Arcade1up cabinet.
The Amstrad CPC version isn't bad. Colourful and runs at a good speed. The Master System version looks very nice indeed. Please could we have a video on the Amstrad Sega conversions ?. It isn't a well known system in the USA but there are loads of games to choose from like Shinobi, Shadow Dancer, Golden Axe, Galaxy Force, Space Harrier 1 and 2, Outrun, Turbo Outrun, Outrun Europa, Sonic Boom, Scramble Spirits, Dynamite Dux, Bonanza Bros, Wonderboy, Super Wonderboy in Monster Land, Alien Syndrome, Super Monaco GP, Eswat, Super Hang On, Enduro Racer, Thunderblade, G Loc, Afterburner, Power Drift, Alien Storm, Altered Beast, Crack Down, Passing Shot, SDI, Line of Fire, Quartet, Action Fighter, Time Scanner, Tapper, Desolator, Hot Rod, World Championship Soccer and Spy Hunter. Compilations were also offered. Don't think any are missing. There is also the Mega PC ( Mega Drive and Amstrad PC combo ). That would be interesting. Also check out Sonic GX4000 ( A new Sonic game for the Amstrad GX4000 console ). Shinobi has recently been remastered on Amstrad and a new and improved version of Wonderboy is on the way. Honestly... I’ve never played this game. But since I recently bought a McWill modded Game Gear, I’m all over this one! I hope it’s as good as the Master System version.
Looks like a more sophisticated Battle OutRun, and I really like Battle OutRun. At one point it sounded like Battle OutRun might have also also been a European exclusive? I didn’t know that, I either got my copy in a flea market or used game store in the 1990s, and I’m in Canada. Although it might have been imported by the previous owner before I purchased it.
I think this game would have had far more acceptance overall if it wasn't called Outrun. I mean, I know why it was, that's the whole point, turning heads with brand placement, but for what it is, it is interesting and has a nice level of variety. It seems to me like it's an estranged cousin of Spy Hunter on the NES or something.
So, what started as a driving simulator game franchise turned into a spy thriller chasing game. I'll guess some Hollywood producers played this when they were young because that's what happened with the "Fast and Furious" franchise, also
Great game - agree with the comments about how hard and frustrating the last level is. My other big issue is needing to press up the whole time to accelerate- thumb gets super sore real quick!

on that period of time, I prefer Battle Out Run, but this game is good too. The music screams "PSG Master System Sound" LOL. Ad I love this sound :) . Thanks Tec Toy to launch these games here on Brazil.

Wow, amazing, archive them and get them online, that's digital history!

What’s your name, good sir? I loved VGA!!
I’ve been loving these videos lately. If only Sega would do an “Arcade Collection” or something.
I've been saying that for years. It must be something blocking it.

I want a system 24 and 32 collection
Yeah I mentioned on the AM2 video.
The world needs more Sega arcade collections. It just needs them, they need to exist.
They need to do a "Sega Lord X" collection

Do you have to press up to go like in the game gear version? That was the only thing that sucked about it for me.
I'm thinking it was pretty identical to the SMS version, I had this on the Game Gear, but it has been a long time since I last played it.
segs needs to be a doll and port or remake dragon force to the ps5 or something,
You really should have compared the music from the SMS port to that of the C64 release.
To be fair they absolutely had to put a timer there. Without it you could make the game way too easy by just slowing down. Also you're supposed to keep up with the thieves that are escaping.
You should simply lose the game if the objective isn't met. Like most games. A timer just made it unnecessarily frustrating at times.
The PC ports if I recall are supposed to be dreadful. I haven’t played them myself, so just going off reputation.
