I've been watching a lot of the Japanese Travel TH-camrs. What I appreciate most about them is they don't try to make themselves the center of the video. No, "Welcome to my channel! Isn't this amazing! Blah blah blah! Look at me!" Some of your pans of the camera are a little fast and shakey. However, I've subscribed to your channel and will now go back and check out some of your videos. Keep up the good work. Hopefully other people who find you by chance will spread the word. :) p.s. I'd be very pleased to never hear music laid over the video. The sounds of the ships, the trains, the crowds, the rain, these are all more pleasing. :)
We had 3 great weeks touring the Shetland Isles just before Covid and the ferry journey is really part of the holiday. A clean, comfortable boat with great food and inexpensive bars. The cabin really is the best option unless you're very young and fit. Thank you for this video, I brought back some happy memories.
Good video brought back happy memories. I went posh and paid the extra with car - you turn up and hand keys over - you walk on board and leave the car to them. Meal included and an extra late lie in the morning, then saunter down after breakfast and car is waiting on the quayside - Wonderful!
Thanks for sharing that with us, I never knew they would park your car on the ferry for you! I came and left Shetland as a foot passenger, but I had a hire car waiting on the dock for me as soon as I arrived!
We did the journey just before Covid and the ferry is excellent. I'm not sure how I would have felt if had been blowing force 8 instead of the force 4 that we had.
Hi,I’m enjoying the modern ferry it has all altered since I use to travel regularly on the st,Clair ferry in 1980s ,I loved the st Clair, and all the memories, and one time they were practising rescuing people ,helicopters lifting people off etc,,,the children loved seeing that,,,those were my Shetland days and my wonderful memories,
I've seen videos like this made by that one Japanese travel youtuber, but taking this concept to where you live is such a great idea. the ferry looks great and the video is soothing, I hope you post more like this :)
Thanks very much, very grateful. Are you talking about Solo Travel Japan? Yes I've seen plenty of his videos, there aren't many overnight ferries in the UK but if I get the opportunity again, I will make another one :)
Same came here to say that too interesting to see how UK Scottish ferries are I'm.from.new Zealand not been one yet biggest one here is the one that connects north and south island it's about 3 hrs so not a sleeper one 🕜
@@danielbettsmanwithautism6421 I've watched a few of the japenese ones from solosolotravel to Shiba (think that's a female that does ferries and the capsule hotels) to another japanese one .. I follow about 4 on yt
I made this trip the other way in September 1991. We left Aberdeen at 18.00 and reached Kirkwall direct at 14.30 next day. Extremely rough seas all the way. Apparently a lorry loaded with cement rolled on top of a hearse down below, it was that rough. I shook the captain's hand once he had docked, and thanked him for getting us there. Even he said "That was quite a trip!" I flew back as planned late the next day, but another passenger was on a Business Return that meant he had to sail back the same day - in the same conditions!
Wow, that's quite a story to tell, thanks for sharing that! On the overnight journey I took (Kirkwall to Lerwick) before the one in this video, the sea was very choppy but not as what you experienced but manged to make it, just a little later than normal. But the "swell" from the sea meant no small boat trips around Shetland for a few days. Oh well, maybe next time!
Japan is also an island nation linked by these ferries. There are similar Japanese videos. I think what British Isles can learn is, Japanese Zen mojo in overnight ferries.
Actually, the recliners in the cinema area are quite comfortable ....... but then again, I was only on the Kirkwall - Aberdeen trip ........ only a 6-hour sail ........ Lerwick's 12 hours🤣
Hi Daniel ,just found your video ,actually it was your name that caught my eye as we share the same surname and my son is also called Daniel Betts ,really enjoyed this virtual trip with you ,would love to see it during the day on the decks ,thanks for sharing and take care .
Great video, the ferry is pretty much like the ones I’m used to take out and about Scandinavia and Northern Europe, lots of private cabins. You got a new subscriber here.
You said that “you can only take hand luggage to your cabin” this is actually not true, you can take as much luggage to your cabin as you want. And it was the boat on the left not the right. And that shot in Aberdeen wouldn’t have been taken til at least 7am because that’s when the ferry docks. Great Video though! 😃
Nice! Thanks for posting your vid. Its always interesting to see travel from different parts of the world in many ways its similar to others. Please post more especially views from the ship. I am sure there are lovely sites/landmarks and such.
I've just come back from this exact trip, my phone must be listening to me since this showed up in my main page. It's a very long ferry but totally worth it. Shetland is so beautiful as well as the rest of it's islands. It's such a long trip to make though, really you need to have a reason to go so far out. Mine was to see my best friend get married, it was a trip of a life time but very cold. ❄️ Will probably be back there for the viking festival and strawberry season 🍓
Just subscribed I love your video I've never seen the UK or Scotland it's on the bucket list ( I'm from.new Zealand here hello 👋) interesting to see what your ferries are like Ive watched a few mainly japanese ferries ... What was your favorite part ?
Hi there, I must say my favourite part was either checking into the cabin or watching Shetland slowly disappear from the viewing point. Overnight domestic ferries in the UK are actually very rare and the food was ok given that food on UK ferries used to have a bad reputation!
One of the very few overnight ferries in the world where you don't arrive in a different country from the one you left. Only other examples I can think of would be Athens to Rhodes and Cadiz to Tenerife.
Interesting contrast with Japanese ferry videos. Those producers are fastidious about not showing other passengers, but the on-board shops are filmed in detail. In this video fellow passengers don't seem as jealous of their privacy but recording the gift shop is frowned on.
It's not that filming in the gift shop is frowned on, it's so small that the shopkeeper will notice me straight away and may have a few words to say about it, even if he didn't mind me filming at all. Also I'm not very good at reacting to people talking to me out of the blue anyway
You don't need photo ID to get on the ferry but had a bit of a story before that. We took a Loganair plane from Edinburgh to Kirkwall and one of my friends only had a Freedom Pass and an old passport for ID. At the airport, they looked at his Freedom Pass and let him on. If they didn't, you probably wouldn't be watching this video! 😂
Out of all the negative comments I've read, yours is the funniest so I'll let you off with that. Even when you use a tripod is hard to keep the camera still at all times, especially when moving around
@@danielbettsmanwithautism6421 Hey, thanks for the reply. It is not about moving the camera in general but about the smoothness of movement and how the camera is pointed. If you look at the image you'll notice that the camera is almost always pointed down slightly. It forces the viewer to look at the upper third of the image to see the information in front of him. This creates discomfort. Make sure that the left and right edges of the image are parallel to vertical lines in the image (e.g. a doorframe or corner wall). This will already give the viewers a smoother impession. I takes some training oc. Also you should avoid fast panning at all cost. If you have to do a panning shot, the slower the better. Use the shortest focal length in closed spaces (like the cabin) and shoot from a corner to avoid panning. Ok, Filmclass dismissed. :)
@@la124 Not in any real sense, no. It doesn't really matter. But this Americanisation of the English language by non-Americans - ride a ferry, ride a train as opposed to ride on a ferry, ride on a train etc can be annoying. In English English we ride a horse, ride a bicycle but ride ON a ferry, ride ON a train and certainly don't ride aircraft.

Nice video! It has the feel of various Japan ferry videos: quiet and relaxing.
Thanks for the video. I plan to go to the shetlands this summer and appreciated learning about the Northlink.

Riding ? Should it not be sailing ?
I didn't know that anybody other than perhaps Americans 'rode' a ferry. You ride a horse. You ride a bicycle. You don't ride a ferry.
Does it really matter? It's a great video.

Wow what a shaky video. Stop watching after a little while. Hope you produce more stable video in the future.
Reduce the text size. It covers the whole screen. Very distracting. Look at the channel “Solo Travel Japan” for pointers.
Why don’t you talk on the video?
Seems pointless doing any video
With no context or voice
Good luck
