- Flying across the ocean (Bass Strait) from Bankstown (Sydney) to Launceston (Tasmania) in a G58 Baron; IFR flight; Using Foreflight in Australia; Multi-engine instrument flying in IMC across the ocean, Using anti-ice systems, using weather radar to avoid heavy storms, safety equipment when flying over ocean, General Aviation Australia.
Nice work Steve, good IMC time despite not being the most scenic for you mate. Expensive trip in the Baron for a day run! Thanks for sharing :)
I enjoy flying in IMC! I got great views on the way down so it all balances out!!
Just found your channel. Enjoying your content Steve. Great to see more aussie aviation on youtube.
Thanks! I’ve got more coming soon. I was out today in thick IMC.
Awesome mate. Keen to see!
Just discovered your channel and very well presented. Well done Mate ✈️
Thanks Michael. Much appreciated!
I've done Lilydale to Launceston VFR before today. They recommend VFR you do Island hopping and the route is in the ERSA and also scheduled reports. I was also flying with flight following so I had someone looking out for me the entire way.
Interesting seeing the jump in a twin IFR.
Cool. There is something nice about flying over oceans. I’ve done Bankstown to Hobart a couple of times in a DA40NG. But always been IFR. Flight Following is great if doing it VFR.
Enjoying your videos Steve. Clearly defining. Wetting my appetite to study for my pifr. I fly out of YSCN (Phoenix) 😏👍🏼
That’s great! I wished these kinds of local videos existed when I was studying for my IR. I highly recommend getting your IR… it’s such a rewarding challenge!
I'm actually smashing all your video presentations. So valuable. Thanks again...Looks like Foreflight is your preferred EFB. I use Ozrunways but open to comparisons. Keep it up. 😎🤟🏽@@diamondairtaxis
I’m so glad you find them useful. I switched from Avplan to ForeFlight. ForeFlight is the number 1 EFB globally. I think it’s superior to the Australian products.
And now i live here.... tassie. Westbury actually. Hope u liked the stay
I love coming to Tasmania. I especially like Hobart. I went to Port Arthur last weekend. What an amazing place.
Good ol' Launy. Almost caught the plane I fly on camera at the GA hangars there.
Yeah it was a bit of a mission getting out of (and back into) the airport. Otherwise great!
@@diamondairtaxis lucky it was overcast. 32L has you directly inline with the sun for most of the year.
This was really cool to watch. Out of curiosity if you don't mind me asking, but how much did this trip cost you for the day?
Probably around aud$5k… not cheap but a great experience! Even better if you can take passengers and share the cost.
Great video Steve. Nice to have two engines once you go "feet wet". Also, how are you finding using Forelight in Aus?
Thanks. I am loving ForeFlight. It’s such a useful tool and it’s working well here. I made the switch early and haven’t looked back!
I used FF when I lived in the US. Prefer it to OZR - we just need some pireps/ comments on airfields etc plus the webcams would be nice. For the time being I am using both. Thanks again for these videos they are very helpful/ well produced and flown. @@diamondairtaxis
Hi Steve great video... quick ignorant question. Last time I looked Foreflight didn't support LSALT. When you referred to LSALT in the video, were you using the MOCA on the IFR Low chart as an equivalent? Not sure if there is a difference... thanks
Good question. Can’t remember when I said it but I was either referring to the MOCA on an airway or grid LSALT which I get from the Australia IFR (Low) or the Jeppesen IFR (low) chart overlays. I think you are right that the ForeFlight Aeronautical chart does not show grid LSALT.
Great video. How do you recreate the images from ForeFlight in your video?
Thanks. I do screen recording on the ipad and then i use Final Cut Pro to combine the videos and split screen to show both simultaneously.
Thanks Steve
Is that an HF antenna mounted to the top of your left engine nacell?
Yes it’s a HF antenna
What’s with 32L when there’s only one runway? Bit bizarre
There is a disused parallel grass runway. I assume that used to be 32R. But they could probably scrap the “L” now.
Is that your aircraft or is it available to rent somewhere?
It’s not mine. I hire it through Navair in Bankstown.
@@diamondairtaxiswhat you pay per hour for that?
Loved this so much! The decision making and thought process is excellent to see for pilots wishing to get better at it. I haven’t been exposed to IMC much so that makes this video stand out for me. Thanks for posting 😊
Great comment. I’m glad you find it useful. Thanks for watching
Love the baron mate great video!
Thanks 👍
