- Chris Hedges and Paul Jay discuss President Obama's statement that he has decided to attack Syria and seek authorization from Congress . . . Even though he says he doesn't need it
"War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength"
Chris Hedges is the man. Nice to hear some truth in a sea of lies.
The real news is very good and this interview between Chris Hedges and Paul Jay was excellent
"turkey, jordan , also have the recordings of the bombing ..."
says who? Lot's of people are saying lot's different things that suit their agendas. That's why we need to see evidence. And even then I disagree that countries like US/UK/France have any mandate morally or legally, since thier own records are FAR worse and furthermore it is a violation of international law to attack a country unless in self defense except with explicit UN authorization.
"Innocent children were killed by their own government."...'Outrageous! That's our job'
Thanks Real News for this intelligent discussion regarding this insane situation.
No need to dissolve the security council, just dissolve the veto. By the way the US has the record on vetos, followed by the UK. Something you wont hear in the establishment media, but if you go to the UN Bibliographical Information System website you can view the voting records for yourself.
You're right that there is plenty of oil, but we do like to cut others off from known oil deposits.
He does the same thing as the previous administration.
The main problem is that "the peoples' representatives" do NOT represent the people. NO WAR.
Audrey, I'm with you. I've asked WeDenyTruth to help with this. Pick one or two TBTF banks. But what strategy? An ultimatum? 'We'll boycott if you strike Syria'? Or just go ahead and boycott for the milion reasons we should?
What would a boycott look like? We pull our money out of BOA, for instance, and put in local credit unions? I'm not smart and need help here.
Earlier in this thread I called out everybody who talks big on the forums but will not respond to a call to action. Help, AI?
He's going to ask Congress? Wow...following the constitution?..What a radical move..
Then why shouldn't it be done if we have the moral duty to do so? Define mortally.
Now we can tell our children: Violence solves problems.
Great stuff as always.
NOBEL PEACE IN ACTION!?
+avner perl yes - the Nobel Peace prize - how the heck about that - nothing means nothing anymore
Yes, but "it's common sense, these are facts. We have high confidence!"
'punish'. Isn't anyone asking the question: sooo, what's this got to do with America??
No such thing as demons, devils, or satan. Evil people are evil people. People should take responsibility for what they do. People should stop looking to rationalize their evil with excuses/legalese.
I called a public meeting and put my name on the fliers and web calendar info. Four people showed up. I've written the local law professors, ACLU, labor unions big and small, radio stations--including college stations==and tried to use website comment forums to organize people to action, including Chris Hedges and Real News videos. From all of that, one excellent man in Montana wrote back. I'm on their lists and accomplished nothing. Like I said, I have kids. They need a dad, not a martyr.
The one part that this interview did not acknowledge was the issue of building a pipeline in Syria to give access to the European market to Saudi Arabia in competition with Russia. Arms sales may be a big part, but oil may be bigger.
Subscribed and liked.
Yeah, and we are sick of it too. There's this little thing called the constitution, and it's about time the government gets reacquainted with it.
"Wars are just to those to whom they are necessary" - Edmund Burke.
Real talk.
you are not alone! But if we all stand we can and will win
These are the statements of a dictator not a democratic nation.
America has been a dictatorship for some time. Billionaire/1% influence buys educational brainwashing, elections and select candidates who do their bidding. And war is very profitable. Follow the money.

The use of force... Where have I heard that before?
absolutely
What do you mean that you "decided" to seek permission from our elected Representatives? You're SUPPOSED to, whether you want it or not!
You are right my friend. George Washington, a man of courage and conviction; the founder of this Republic, warned against foreign entanglements.
We need to cast off the Federal government, and start to take back what is rightfully our under the 10th Amendment.
Impeach that 'Shine' NOW!
well said
Thanks, kingshane. I've come to believe that if there had been no draft--if those young men had not been personally in mortal danger--there would have been no antiwar movement to speak of.
"This is about 1 thing, and that is control"
I would agree with that, but oil is a major lever in the control box. The decline of cheap oil has led directly to a scramble for oil, and the US is a major oil importer. It is absolutely critical the US ruling class's financial and military dominance, for the moment at least.
PS the Earth does not 'produce' water. And if you were right about the Earth 'producing' oil then fracking, which is far more expensive, would not be in use.
They're in the way of someone's pipeline.
"our intelligence shows..."
uh yeah, that's not gonna do it for the public.
But hey, an irrational US is such a scary thing that Assad will be afraid to use chemical weapons in the meantime.
This as is far as an usurpation goes.
Good question.
And we should note that neither the Vietnam war nor President Nixon was defeated at the ballot box.
Since the fall of the USSR, we live under "The Law of the Jungle". Might makes right....
This isn't at all a criticism of--In fact I got here via a search for Chris Hedges. But I hit Pause before the video started because I'm making a bet with myself that his first word will be 'Well.'
Pardon the moment of frivolity, but the past couple weeks or so I'm working hard not to freak out in front of my kids. I think it's getting close to the time I'll have to tell them to say goodbye to their friends and family because we're emigrating.
he doesn't speak of the chemical weapons we have used in Iraq. Chemical weapons that are 1000 times worse than what the rebels used in Libya, the use of depleted Uranium.
Peace brother. A failure to communicate.
An honest question: What finally does trolling mean? You were commenting on the topic. You responded reasonably to someone who challenged your point (and who personally insulted you--I apologize for that, and not in half-measure). I thought trolls were people who tried to pick fights to derail the discussion.
wow, you sir are beyond human aid
I have no opinion on this, it's either we do nothing or we do something.
he did not ask congress just like when he declare war on Libra- what people saw was the political theatrics
"but where is the rest of the world ..."
Some simple reasons:
1) If you leave a country alone its people tend to rise up and solve their own problems, however the US has always sought to ensure that that doesnt happen, lest the "virus" of real democracy spread (quoting Henry Kissenger) and interfere with US investments and power.
2) Many countries have already 'stepped up', funding, supplying arms and fighters to further their own agendas. That's the problem.
For anyone who read all that, I should clarify that my use of the word 'curious' is genuine. My observations tend toward no particular conclusion. It's unsettling, though, to come away feeling as if Hedges stood in the way rather than led the way.
We are the people who// have no nation to speak of as home,There is no I'm American,I'm German,I'm Russian. It is,We are the people of the world and we hate the abuse of powers. We hate that war is flung in our face, because Monsanto wishes to dominate our Food supply creating a mono-culture for every region on earth. We hate not having the right to "dissent" and show dissatisfaction against our abusive government. We hate that we are labeled Terrist/Terrorist
Treason!!!! Treason!!!! Treason!!!!!Treason!!!!!Treason!!!!!Treason!!!!Treason!!!Treason!!!!Treason!!!!!Treason!!!!!Treason!!!!!
I can't stand all these folks with their double talk. "We can't condone genocide, we're culpable if we do nothing" BUT "we can't be military aggressors" shut up. Why is it so hard for any of these hacks to ADMIT that these decisions are very difficult and require A LOT of thought and deliberation?
You seem to be assuming that he didn't acheive what he wanted to acheive.
doublespeak for - ".... I'm going to congress to cover my Ass....."
1:46-1:51 for Double-Speak
i think accountability should begin at home, eh barry
...to stand up to other countries that flaunt international rules.
You mean, like the US?
Please take some time to think about what you said, gain some more info.
Zero "moral credibility" is correct, Mr. Hedges...
1:25 bothers me so much. Our president thinks he has the authority to declare war without congresses approval. He took an oath to protect and defend the constitution and he thinks that he can break that oath by declaring war on another country without congresses approval. Well he can't.
15 of the 19 nine/eleven hijackers had Saudi Arabian passports, and none were from Iraq, Iran, or Afghanistan. Hedges in this video seems to point many of his fingers toward Saudi Arabia. After 9/11 did we go to war with Saudi Arabia? Almost immediately after 9/11 there popped up this new term "al Qaeda," and it just looked to me too much like "the man behind the curtain" or something, so I've questioned info against "al Qaeda" ever since. Unicorns and "al Qaeda" are similar.
only if we the people let! We can change it now it is up to us I love Chris Hedges and Alex Jones!! We need to let folks like Sen. Warren, Sen. SAnders and Alan Grayson and Dennis Kocinch know we are for them!
Chris Hedges is a fucking hero.
It's Dale Gavlak writing at mintpress .. and she's a she .. and quite a respected foreign correspondent ..
Is it just me or is TH-cam limiting bandwidth on these type of videos?
"Yes we can"
Yes we can..............aaaaaand back to my TV watching football coz it's what Normal people do, although it is just Big guys on Steroid running around a field with tight pants after a ball, within a prescribed set of rules & regulations. And after six packs of Budweiser, I believe it is Fun👨. Ok wait, someone's poking me on Facebook. Life's good...
Hes a constitutional lawyer and professor??????????? What fuckin planet am I on?
You're not supposed to be a jerk? uh oh . . .
Yup. And it starts at 33 Liberty St. NYC
Well, PF, I agree that enough of us directing ourselves toward some sort of effort should certainly be capable of tremendous force. What that effort would be and how meaningful communication can be ahieved among enough of us in order to define and coordinate that effort beats me. Voting was taken from us long ago, and the Supreme Court sealed that deal in 2010 with Citizens United. The bad guys own both parties, tthe courts, the TV networks, the major dailies, drones, F-22's, NSA, FBI, CIA ETC
Don't leave, coward. If you want things to get better, you can't be an absentee revolutionary.
Could Hedges be surrounded by more books? I think I see an empty space in the lower left of the frame.
basically hes saying that if congress votes no, they he wont be blamed for it, if congress does than he can blame congress. Not very smart
People did it.
I'd disagree partly on the veto comment, but otherwise we seem to be roughly in accord.
The US is just so darn good at regime change, I just can't wait to see them try it again.
Usually agree 100% with Hedges .. but think he`s being a little naive here dismissing the illogical of Assad using chemical weapons in this situation ... perhaps ever. This shit stinks to high heaven.
I am happy that I never voted for Obama because he was to inexperienced and was susceptible to doing what he is doing. But I honesty believe him and Kerry are smarter than this and my theory is that they are being blackmailed and/or threatened to carry out these illogical actions. Rus Tice stated that Obama was spied on by the NSA since 2004 along with members of Congress, the Supreme Court, federal judges and big law firms. The average elementary school child can see through this stupidity.
Amen.
its basically being a jerk, they don't necessarily have to derail the discussion
Obama should get the nobel prize for lying. I have no idea why he's in politics. He should be in show business.
How do Obama and the guy next to him sleep at night?
This is like the old case of "We need to go into Iraq, they're harboring weapons of mass destruction" Oops, there was a "slip up" in intelligence.
"We need to strike Syria, they're harboring chemical weapons" Oops, there was a "slip up" in intelligence.
American's new motto should be, "Call the cops, they can't unrape you" either that or "think locally, fuck globally"
Constitutionally congress has the authority 2 declare war---not the President---
This happened, and we all let it happen.
He's lying again, his lips are moving.
Hedges cites moral credibility - but this to me is not convincing, because who is to say we should not break that streak of imperialist hegemony? Just because we have not in the past intervened in genocides doesn't mean we can't change this archetype.
Agent Orange, Depleted Uranium. I wonder who used those? LOL
yep, that's the strategy.
what about torture, or ''enhanced interrogation'' violations of international laws carried out and continued under his administration? if we can't police ourselves, how can we police the world?
Yeah right, Dont Forget Nato also use depleted uranium shells, that's guilt by association for every NATO's members.
War invasion an american tradition since thomas jefferson's invasion of Tripoli and currently Iraq, Afghanistan, Syrian, and who else. Give peace a chance!!!
It's just sickening to listen to Obama say these things. The hypocrisy is just too disgusting.
why aren't they talking about the real reason- Israel and turkey does not like the that fact that Syria is running a pipe for gas-
You are incorrect - He does not have the authority to attack a soverign nation without Congressional approval.
Even Bush had Congressional approval for Iraq !
That would be a good idea if Russia wasn't waiting. That is a bit like going wishing with a line when there is a shark in the water. Leave the little fish alone --- it isn't worth it.
this is why we need direct democracy, so the people can stop a trigger-happy president from starting another world war when congress fails to act.
Pot calling the kettle black
he's been doing this from day one on issue after issue
