    There were plans to extend the M66 to Newcastle. Someone saw a map of it going over the Yorkshire dales that will be a interesting map to look at. I think that would have cut corner of M62/M1 North route from Manchester and Lancashire. They were also plans for a Manchester to Derby motorway planned in the 1930s I think this would have been the original M6 route starting at Derby rather than Rugby.

    This would appear to show that the M1 was Britain’s first motorway when in fact it was the M6 Preston by pass

      It correctly shows Preston bypass but it's such a small section on the map at the start of the video you may have missed it

    They should upgrade the entirety of the A1 from London to Newcastle (possibly even to Edinburgh) to motorway. I also think a lot more dual carriageways should be upgraded into motorways, like the A14 from Birmingham to Cambridge, A55 in North Wales, the A30 in Cornwall and Devon, the small section of the London ringroad near Dartford that is dual carriageway, and maybe the A23 to Brighton. Honestly our motorway network looks quite poor on a map like this but when you add all the "almost motorways" like the aforementioned ones, you'll see it could easily be significantly better

      The A55 should not be a motorway but it should be a 3 lane dual carriageway and what we need is a 3 lane dual carriageway from the North to the South A470/A483 Wrexham to Cardiff. We are the only country in Europe that does not have a North/South motorway or Dual carriageway

    I can't believe it took over ten years for the motorway to be built going through modern day cumbria (then Westmoreland, North Yorkshire and Cumberland)

    Overall I'm surprised at how good everyone was building the motorways back in the past

    Quite surprised at how late the m74 up to Glasgow was built. I went up their a lot as a child/teenager around the 90's, so I guess for a long time, probably from the mid-70's it was just a dual carrigeway A road. That would be unthinkable today as one of only 2 majour arteries up to Scotland.

      It wasn't even dual carriageway in the 80s as I recall. Haven't been up there for a while but the old road is now the B7076 and I think you can still use it for a lot of the way if you're not in a hurry and want to see what it used to be like!

    • @acciid
      @acciid 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It was dual in the 80s. A lot of the old road was singled when the motorway was built.

    So as there is M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, M6, M8 and M9 motorways. Why is there no M7 motorway?? And what happened to the proposal of the M7 motorway in Northern England or Scotland?? Because the M7 would of started from Carlisle and following the A7 all the way to Edinburgh. Possibly? And the M11 motorway could of extended to Norwich instead of Cambridge. Also the A1(M) could of gone all the way to Edinburgh or the M1 motorway. And the M67 motorway should of been extended to Sheffield from Manchester where it meets with the M60 Manchester Orbital Motorway.

      At one time the M7 would/could? have been the section of motorway from Carlisle to Glasgow, but the Scottish Office/Scottish Government decided to follow a different pattern of naming to the DoT in England and Wales. The Scottish decision was to number motorways after the number of the previous main A road that it replaced - in that case it was the A74 from Glasgow to the border, so the new motorway became M74. But even in England there are oddities because plans were changed, motorways rerouted after they started (I think originally M1 was to go from London to Birmingham etc) and some strange numberings like three digit motorways (lie M621 etc.) I even think there used to be a four digit one that was only a short link!

    • @AdistuffRBX
      @AdistuffRBX 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Because of the road configuration the M7 would have to start in western Scotland where almost nothing is. Especially with the M74 filling all the demand there and basically being the M7
