    THANK YOU SOOO MUCH for showing these beauties!!! My dad bought a Chevy SS in '64, Azure Aqua w/black interior. BUT!! He got the powerglide 2-speed trans. Yuk. I managed to get a '64 SS, black w/black, back in about '80 or so. 409 w/dual 4bbls., dual point distributor, 4-speed, positraction rear with a 4.88 ring in it. Man, that car was F A S T. I really loved that beast. But a rod bearing let go and I had nowhere to store it. Damn, how I wish I had been able to hang onto it!!! But life took over, you know how it is. Thanks again for getting Rick to share it with us. PS Only car I ever had that got gallons per mile!! hahaha!!!

    I'm a Mopar guy because I've always thought that Mopar built the best high performance drivelines but GM cars definitely had the best overall build quality as far as fit and finish back in those days with those Fisher bodies. The big bodied high performance Chevy's and Pontiac's have always been favorites of mine. I've always thought that 1965-66 were the best looking years for the big Chevy's and Pontiac's. I'd love to have a 66 Chevy Impala SS or a Biscayne with the L72 427/425 hp or a 65-66 Pontiac Catalina 2+2 with the 421 HO and Tri Power. The 1961-62 bubble top Chevy's and 61 Pontiac bubble tops were beautiful too

    Yay, you touched on my year of birth! The '64 Impala SS is my favorite car of all time.
    The 1964 model year saw each auto manufacturer bring out at least one new product: General Motors brought out the new Chevelle and the all new Tempest/F-85/Special intermediates - and, of course, the Tempest was the foundation of what is considered to be the first muscle car: the Pontiac GTO. Ford came out with a new Thunderbird, and in April '64, the Mustang. Chrysler Corporation launched a new Imperial, and at the same time was wowing the public with their experimental turbine car. And even little American Motors had a restyled car of their own - the Rambler American, which lasted all the way to the end of the decade and spawned one of AMC's wildest cars ever - the Hurst SC/Rambler n 1969!
    Yep, 1964 was a great year for cars. And it was the year I came into the world! (4/7/2020)

    My cousin Cherry had a boyfriend who bought a new 6 cylinder SS. He wanted the style AND lower insurance payments. Young single men were charged a lot for insurance and the 6 saved quite a bit. Most people would not notice or care about the 6 but would notice the SS trim and be suitably impressed. I graduated high school in 1964.

    And that Grand Prix is even nicer than the Impala SS. Always liked the Pontiac 389 and 421 engines..... especially the 421 Super Duty. What a monster they were. The SD's 405 horsepower factory rating is a joke. I saw a bone stock 421SD make 488 horsepower at 6000 rpm on an engine dyno. A 421SD Catalina with the exhaust cutouts open is a sound to behold. The 1964 Pontiac Grand Prix shared its roofline with the 1964 Oldsmobile Starfire. GM's 'B-Body' cars (Buick Wildcat, Oldsmobile Dynamic 88, Pontiac Bonneville, Chevrolet Impala) for 1964 shared the same roofline.

    '64 was one of the last years that the full-size cars reigned as the kings of GM's line. As much as I love the mid-size cars of 1964-'72 (Malibu, LeMans/GTO, Cutlass etc.) they began relegating the 'big' cars to 'family' cars within their own divisions. This was further entrenched with the Camaro and Firebird of course. It's interesting though that the convertibles continued on the full-size cars through 1975 on the lower 4 divisions (Eldo through '76) but the Camaro/Firebird conv's were dropped in after '69, and the mid-sizes after '72. So the big cars did have that 'last laugh' over the smaller models. By 1977 and onward, it didn't matter. Two and four-door pillared-sedans only from that point on, REALLY just being hardcore family and or Hertz rent-a-cars with (I would think) almost no collectibility today. Didn't say zero, but not much. If the beautiful Grand Prix and Monte Carlos of the mid-'70s STILL haven't caught on at 45+ years of age, it's unlikely they ever will. Could be wrong, but it seems unlikely. Never see them at all GM car shows as of 2018, 2019. As far as '20 goes, all bets are off as to whether they'll even be such as show at all.

      $5 in 1964 would be $42 dollars today. My goodness! How big was that tank?!? Maybe the good ol days weren’t as great as you remembered, and gas was more expensive back then?

      @@UmmYeahOk gas was cheap back then! Right now to fill up a car like this would cost you $70-$100! Also the gasoline back then was better quality with higher octane (110 minimum unlike nowaday's 87) and no damaging alcohol that'll rot out fuel lines and clog carburetors.

    • @UmmYeahOk
      @UmmYeahOk 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ford LTD that’s why I asked how big the tank was. $42 in today’s money, yet I could fill up my mustang for half that, and that was before prices crashed. Now it’s $1.30 a gallon. My 1967 Triumph GT6 is clearly smaller than an impala but can hold 12 gallons. I recently got gas for it, 92 ethanol free octane. Price was $3.01 a gallon before the quarantine. Sure it was unleaded, but I’d imagine prices were different when 110 was more plentiful, like 87 is today. I have to drive to a special station several towns over to get this stuff. Clearly it’s going to be higher if they’re the only ones with it.

    • @UmmYeahOk
      @UmmYeahOk 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I love the Impala especially the 64 but I got to admit it just doesn't look as attractive to me with its original ride height

    Why does Dennis always insist on driving the cars? I’ll bet a lot of owners wouldn’t like that!

      Hey, don’t get me wrong! Love your shows. It’s just that I know a lot of owners who would cringe at the idea of someone else driving their cars. I would be afraid to! I might accidentally break something. Keep up the good job. Met you in Issaquah WA
      at a show once.

      I'd trust Dennis to drive any of my cars. He respects the cars and the owners, and it's good to get his feedback and input as he drives it, vs just being a passenger.

      I don’t know why he goes through that little act every single time either. We know he’s going to drive the car, that’s why he’s there. It’s a silly scripted moment that needs to go.

    The 63 impala in my opinion is a better looking car

  • @theda850two

    '63 Impala is better looking, with the "points" on the 4 corners, 64s are flat & boring.
    And not a word was said or mentioned about the 8 lug cast aluminium wheels on the Grand Prix :( More of a Pontiac only thing than the back window!

    Back when anybody with a decent job could buy a new car. And you could get a stripped down model with no options. Now everything is standard equipment whether you want it or not. And you have to work 3 jobs, have perfect credit and get a loan to get a new piece of crap

    • @wildcat64100
      @wildcat64100 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you have a decent job, you don’t need three of them. Most people financed their new cars back in 1964, just like now.
